Links Are Dead - I Know

I keep getting Emails from people asking me to re-upload the links and music etc. I think people are just getting to those particular pages so are not reading the reason for the dead links.

So I am putting this in place so hopefully people will read it and stop Emailing me about it.

The reason the links are dead is that my account with Media Fire has been closed with all 11,000 files lost. That is why you can not download the things and No I can not re-upload them.

Eventually I will start doing that again when I have found something suitable. In the meantime this blog will be information only blog.

Thank you all

Michaael

Madness - One Better Day

'One Better Day' is a song by British band Madness from their 1984 album 'Keep Moving'.

The song was written by Graham McPherson and Mark Bedford and was released as a single in the UK, and spent 7 weeks in British charts peaking at number 18.

The single was a last minute choice, as 'Victoria Gardens' from the same album was originally slated to be the album's second single. The remixed version of 'Victoria Gardens' intended for the A-side was instead included as a bonus track on the 12" single. This was the last single under the Stiff Records label, before the band's creation of their own label, Zarjazz Records.

As the single was the final release under Stiff Records, the label did not want to film an accompanying music video, and the band had to fund it themselves. Mike Barson flew from Amsterdam especially to be a part of the video. The resulting music video was filmed in Arlington Road, just outside Arlington House. Incidentally, Arlington House is the first line of the song, and was a local homeless refuge, one of the Rowton Houses.

Most of the video shows the band members as homeless people, except a few clips showing them performing the song. It also shows Suggs dancing with his wife Bette Bright, who plays a homeless woman in the video.

Terry had a solo single hit with 'Love lies lost' in 1984 which she wrote in collaboration with group members Boy George and Roy Hay.

The single reached number 34 in the UK Singles Charts. The single also reached the same position in Australia and was a number 28 hit in Ireland.

After this, Terry pursued a career in film and television production, most prominently behind the scenes as a producer and executive producer for the TV broadcast of the BRIT Awards since 2001.

Tears For Fears - Mothers Talk

After their debut album 'The Hurting' had been a reasonable success, Tears for fears had to come up with a follow-up.

The new album - which would be 'Songs From The Big Chair', released in 1985 - was preceded by the single 'Mothers Talk'.

Roland Orzabal commented: 'The song stems from two ideas. One is something that mothers say to their children about pulling faces. They say the child will stay like that when the wind changes. The other idea is inspired by the anti-nuclear cartoon book 'When the wind blows' by Raymond Briggs.

The single version was different from the album version (and shorter, too) and did not appear on cd as far as I know. 'Mothers talk' reached number 14 in the UK singles chart. But more successful singles were on the way...

Japan - the Art of Parties

When the ads for Japan's 'The Art of Parties' appeared in the Spring of 1981, every New Romantic worth his or her eyeliner took notice.

The single featured the band's most richly sumptuous dance track to date, wildly syncopated rhythm guitars and horns bursting across Steve Jansen's cascading drums, and Sylvian offering one his most irresistible choruses. Add in Mick Karn's increasingly baroque fretless bass, Richard Barberi's shimmering oriental synth textures and this produces one of the iconic singles of the year promising more to come.

In Canada the single was released as an EP, which is features here. It included the B-Side but added in another 2 tracks to flesh out the release. This proved valuable to the Japan collector as this was the better release than the UK version.

'The Art of Parties' reached number 48 in the UK singles Chart

Sheila E - The Glamorous Life

Sheila Escovedo was born on December 12, 1957 in Oakland, California (USA). She is the daughter of percussionist Pete Escovedo. She became a drummer and percussionist herself and made her debut in 1976 with jazz bassist Alphonso Johnson on 'Yesterday's dream'.

Sheila met Prince in the early Eighties, when she was performing with her father. He enlisted her for his band and she played during the recording sessions for 'Purple rain' (1984).

Though taken under Prince's wing, she proved to be a successful artist in her own right.

'The Glamorous Life' is a song written by Prince in 1984 and first recorded by singer/percussionist Sheila E. The dance song has lyrics which reflect a cynicism for the decadence and materialism of the song's protagonist, referred to in the third person, who "wants to lead a glamorous life", although she is aware that "without love, it ain't much".

'The Glamorous Life' was originally intended to be recorded by the short-lived replacement act for Vanity 6, girl group Apollonia 6. Prince allegedly had several tracks lined up for the trio to record for their 1984 debut album (and by some accounts, their follow up album as well), but abandoned the idea when he learned that lead singer Apollonia Kotero had no desire to stay in the group beyond her contractual obligations as designed for her movie role in Purple Rain.

Prince decided to give the song to Sheila E. who was fresh off her duet on Prince's 'Erotic City'. 'The Glamorous Life' would be recorded by Sheila E. and go on to launch her solo career.

'The Glamorous Life' was the title track and closing song on Sheila E.'s debut solo album, and reached number 7 on the U.S. pop charts, as well as number 1 on the U.S. dance charts, and earned a Grammy Award nomination. In the UK the single made number 76 in the Singles Chart.

Ian Dury - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

'Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick' is a song and single by Ian Dury & The Blockheads, first released 23rd November 1978.

The single made it to number one on the UK Singles Chart in January 1979, and is the band's most successful single ever.

Paul Hardcastle remixed the track in 1985, stripping all the instrumental tracks and using only Dury's vocal, and re-recording the instrumental parts with keyboards. The re-mix reached number 55 in the UK Singles chart.

Scritti Politti - Hypnotise

Scritti Politti are a British band, originally formed in 1977 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Although there have been various changes to the line-up, Cardiff-born singer-songwriter Green Gartside was the founding member of the band and the only member to have remained throughout the group's history

'Hypnotise' is the least successful of the four singles that were released from Scritti Politti's 1985 album 'Cupid & Psyche', despite (or maybe because of) the fact that it didn't sound radically different from other tracks on this album. With a great hook and the signature vocals of Green Gartside, the single only reached no. 68 in the UK singles chart.

Fiction Factory - (Feels Like) Heaven

Fiction Factory were a British band, formed in the mid-1980's. Kevin Patterson, Eddie Jordan and Chic Medley were playing in a band called The Rude Boys, a skinhead ska band based in Perth, Scotland.

After they left that band, they wanted to keep writing songs but were fed-up with live performances. With no name for this project, the first song Kevin and Eddie wrote for it was '(Feels Like) Heaven' in the space of roughly half a day.

From a list of names that Chic had drawn up, Fiction Factory was chosen: firstly, because of the perceived falseness of the music scene and its reliance on pretty faces, the project was originally going to be fronted by nice-looking people who had nothing to do with the songwriting or performance of the music; secondly, the hope was that they would write music for themselves, other artists and maybe even films.

'(Feels Like) Heaven' is a single by the British music group Fiction Factory. It was released in 1984 on their debut album 'Throw The Warped Wheel Out'.

It was a major hit in Switzerland, topping the singles chart. In the United Kingdom, the single peaked at number 6. Other chart positions include number 14 in Sweden and number 20 in Austria.

The permanent line-up grew to include drummer Steve White and Weller's then-wife, vocalist Dee C. Lee. Other artists such as Tracie Young and Tracey Thorn (Everything but the Girl) also collaborated with the group.

'Shout to the Top!' is the title of a single by The Style Council, which featured on the soundtrack to the 1985 film Vision Quest and 1985 album Our Favourite Shop. The song was later covered by Loleatta Holloway and remixed by Fire Island.

The song also appears on the deluxe edition of Café Bleu and features in the 2000 film Billy Elliot and on its soundtrack.

Murray Head - One Night in Bangkok

'One Night in Bangkok' is a song originally sung by Murray Head on the 1984 concept album for the musical Chess. Its music was composed by former ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, with lyrics written by Tim Rice & Björn Ulvaeus.

The release topped the charts in many countries, including number 12 in the UK Singles Chart, Number 3 in the US and Canada Charts. It also entered the charts in South Africa, West Germany, Switzerland and Australia.

The full version of the song begins with an orchestral intro, "Bangkok", which has oriental styling, but cannot be confused with Thai folk music. This serves as the introduction to Act 2 in the original musical album, and feeds into the first verse of the song itself.

The main song is a pop song, whose lyrics sarcastically juxtapose the city and its night life with the game of chess. Whereas the chorus - sung by Swedish artist Anders Glenmark extoll Bangkok's reputation, the verses - a rap by Murray Head, who performed as American chess grandmaster Freddie in the original concept album for the musical - denounce the city, including its muddy old river and its "reclining Buddha".

The setting for the song is an interview by Freddie, who is in Bangkok to serve as a TV analyst for a match involving his rival, world champion and Russian defector Anatoly. Freddie states a preference for what he sees as an intellectual purity in chess, as compared to the seedier aspects of Bangkok's night life, e.g. "the queens we use would not excite you". His statements suggest a personal lack of interest for the exotic settings typically involved in international chess, preferring to focus on the game itself.

Icehouse - Love In Motion - Album

After the UK Top 20 chart success of 'Hey Little Girl', an album was released entitled 'Love In Motion' in 1983.

This was a re-issue of the original album release called 'Primitive Man'. 'Love in Motion' contained the same tracks in different order except 'Break These Chains' being replaced by 'Love in Motion'.

An alternate cover work was a still from the Russell Mulcahy directed video for 'Hey Little Girl'.

Primitive Man was originally released in September 1982 in Australia. In January 1982, Icehouse founder Iva Davies started recording Primitive Man essentially as a solo project, it was co-produced with Keith Forsey who later worked with Simple Minds.

Released as an Icehouse album, Primitive Man reached number 3 on the Australian National album charts, number 1 on the New Zealand Album chart but only made it to number 64 in the UK Album charts.

Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know

In 1983, Tracey Ullman, before she became better known in the United States as a comedy actress, included a version on her debut album, You Broke My Heart In Seventeen Places. This song was the album's most successful single, charting in the top ten of various national charts. MacColl performed backing vocals on Ullman's version and reprised her original "bay-ay-be-ee" in the middle of the song, which went to #2 in the U.K., #8 in the U.S., and became the theme song for the final three seasons of Ullman's later television series Tracey Takes On.

It is sometimes erroneously reported that Ullman's version of "They Don't Know" simply uses the backing track from MacColl's original single. In fact the two versions are noticeably different: Ullman's version, which was produced by Peter Collins, is in a different key (C, as opposed to the original's B), and it features a very slightly faster tempo, a somewhat different arrangement and a guitar solo that differs from the one played on MacColl's version, which was produced by Liam Sternberg. The confusion may stem from the fact that Ullman did use a previously-existing MacColl backing track when recording her own version of MacColl's "Terry" in 1984. (Both versions of "Terry" were co-produced by MacColl.)

The video for "They Don't Know" featured a cameo from Paul McCartney; at the time Ullman was filming a minor role in McCartney's film Give My Regards To Broad Street, which he had written directly for the screen

Tracey Ullman - Breakaway

'Breakaway' (spelled 'Break-a-Way' on the original 45 RPM label, and spelled 'Breakaway' on most subsequent releases and compilations) is a song written by Jackie DeShannon and Sharon Sheeley.

It was originally recorded by Irma Thomas in 1964 and released as the B-Side of her biggest hit, the US number 17 hit single 'Wish Someone Would Care'. The original version of 'Breakaway' was never a hit.

'Breakaway' was Tracey Ullman's 1983 debut single in the UK, and reached number 4 in the UK charts. The track then appeared on Ullman's album 'You Broke My Heart In 17 Places', which was released in 1984.

In North America, 'Breakaway' was actually Ullman's second single, being released after her hit 'They Don't Know'. It charted at a modest number 70 in the US in 1984, although the video for Ullman's version received significant play on the then-fledgling MTV and Canada's MuchMusic.

The songs lyrics speak of the singer's inability to find the strength to leave an abusive relationship and describe a situation where the song's first person protagonist is repeatedly on the verge of running away from the bad situation only to find at the last moment she does not have the strength of will to follow through.

Mick Karn featuring David Sylvian - Buoy

The break up of the band Japan was manily, but not exclusivly, due to the continued anamosity between David Sylvian and Mick Karn.

However this had cooled down by 1986 when Mick was working on his new album 'Dreams of Reasons Produce Monsters'. David Sylvian had been asked to collaborate on the album.

Sylvian had written the lyrics and provided the voculs to two songs, 'When Loves Walks In' and Buoy'.

'Buoy', released as the single from the album, entered the charts at number 63 on the 17th January 1987. This was to be it's highest position as it left the charts 2 weeks later.

Split Enz - True Colours - Album

'True Colours', the fifth album released by New Zealand band Split Enz, was their first major commercial success. Released in 1980, the album featured more mature songwriting from Neil Finn.

Credited to him is the album's New Zealand and Australian number 1 single, 'I Got You', which also broke them internationally. The U.S. release of the album featured 'Shark Attack' and 'I Got You' in reversed positions due to the latter's success on the single charts.

Originally, the band thought 'Missing Person' to be the album's standout track, not realizing 'I Got You' would become the hit. 'I Hope I Never' was mixed differently for the Australian single release, with strengthened percussion. 'Nobody Takes Me Seriously,' 'What's the Matter With You' and 'Poor Boy' were released as singles in the northern hemisphere.

The album was initially released in four colour combinations — yellow and blue, red and green, purple and yellow, and blue and orange — but would ultimately be given another four makeovers with releases in lime green and pink, hot purple and burnt orange, gold and platinum (to mark its sales milestones), and finally yellow, blue and red.

When it was later released on the A&M label, wild, imaginative shapes and patterns covered the vinyl using a technique known as "laser-etching". When light hit the record, these designs would protrude and spin about the room. The album was the first to ever use this technique, originally designed to discourage the creation of counterfeit copies.

Dalis Car - The Judgment is the Mirror

Mick Karn and Pete Murphy only made one album entitled 'The Waking Hour' and from that album there was just the one single called ' The Judgement is the Mirror'.
Released in 1984 the single only made it to number 66 in the UK Singles Chart. The band then dispanded.
In 2010 Pete Murphey anounced that he was going to be again working with Mick Karn on a follow up project. Some work was completed on this but the project was not completed before the death of Mick earlier this month.

Dalis Car - The Waking Hour - Album

Dalis Car was a musical group formed in 1984 by Peter Murphy - vocalist, Mick Karn -bassist, keyboardist, guitarist, saxophonist and Paul Vincent Lawford - rhythm construction.

The band was formed shortly after Murphy and Karn left their former bands - Bauhaus and Japan, respectively. They recorded one album, 'The Waking Hour', and released one single, 'The Judgement is the Mirror'. The cover of the album features a detail from Maxfield Parrish's seminal painting Daybreak.

The recording of the album took place in unusual circumstances, as neither Karn nor Murphy spent much time together in the recording studio, preferring to send tapes back and forth between each another, to work on alone.

The album, a collection of keyboard and bass-driven songs, was a commercial failure as the album made 84 on the UK Album Chart, and the duo soon disbanded.

Midge Ure and Mick Karn - After A Fashion

'After A Fashion' was a one-off single released by Ultravox lead singer Midge Ure and Mick Karn bassist for the art rock band Japan, from 1974 to 1982.

The song peaked at number 39 on the UK singles chart in 1983.

The cover for the single was taken by Linda McCartney.

I have included the video that was taken from the Timmy Mallet Saturday program as this is the only version that has surfaced on You Tube (to my knowledge). The quality is not great. If any one has a much better quality that does not have the programe info at the end then please let me know. Thank you in advance.

Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street

'Baker Street' is a ballad written and first recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty.

Released as a single in 1978, it reached number 3 in the UK Singles Chart and number 2 in the USA, number 1 in Australia and number 9 in the Netherlands.

The arrangement is famous for its saxophone solo, played by Raphael Ravenscroft.

In October 2010 the song was recognised by the BMI for surpassing 5 million performances worldwide.

Named after the famous London street of the same name, the song was included on Rafferty's second solo album, City to City, which was Rafferty's first release after the resolution of legal problems surrounding the formal breakup of his old band, Stealers Wheel in 1975.

In the intervening three years, Rafferty had been unable to release any material due to disputes about the band's remaining contractual recording obligations. In addition to a guitar solo, played by Hugh Burns, the song features a prominent eight-bar saxophone riff played as a break between verses, by Raphael Ravenscroft.

The solo had been intended for guitar. Ravenscroft was in the studio to record a brief soprano saxophone part and, when he heard that the guitarist would not be available to play the solo, suggested that he record it using the alto saxophone he had in his car. The solo led to what became known as "the 'Baker Street' phenomenon".

I know that this song is from the 70's but it is one of those songs that you just love. The saxophone solo is fantastic. I have always loved this song since first hearing it back in 1978. I also wanted to include the song here as, like Mick Karn, Gerry Rafferty also died on the 4th January 2011. Gerry had been ill with liver failure due to his heavy drinking and this is what finally killed him. So here is the beautiful song for all to enjoy

Mick Karn - Titles - Album

Antony Michaelides (24 July 1958 – 4 January 2011), better known as Mick Karn, was born into a Greek Cypriot family, in Nicosia, Cyprus. In late October, of 1961, the family emigrated to London, England, when Andonis was three years old.

Mick Karn helped form the the band Japan, whose other members included David Sylvian, keyboardist Richard Barbieri and Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen as drummer. The band began as a group of friends, who all studied at the same school. As youngsters they played music as a means of escape, playing Sylvian's two-chord numbers – sometimes with Karn as the front man, sometimes with Sylvian at the fore, guitarist Rob Dean joined the band later.

Following Japan's split in 1982 Karn persued various solo projects. One of those projects included his first solo album entitled 'Titles', released in 1982.

Karn recorded the album in London, during July and August 1982. The album made number 74 in the UK Album charts.

The only single released entitled 'Sensitive' is a reworking of the Roberto Carlos song La Distancia

Tracklisting:
01 - Tribal Dawn
02 - Lost Affections in a Room
03 - Passion in Moisture
04 - Weather the Windmill
05 - Saviour, Are You With Me?
06 - Trust Me
07 - Sensitive
08 - Piper Blue

In June 2010, Mick Karn announced on his website that he had been diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer. After a long battle Mick Karn died at home at 4.30pm on 4th January 2011.

Mick was a great musician, producing music that was both interesting and thought provoking. I had continued to follow Mick's music, as well as other members of Japan, and have to say that it came as a shoke that he had passed away. Mick Karn will be sadly missed and my thoughts go to his family, friends and many fans out there that loved his music and will continue to do so for many more years to come. RIP.

Smash Hits Magazine - 25th December 1980 to 7th January 1981

Smash Hits was a pop music based magazine, aimed at teenagers and young adults and originally published in the United Kingdom by EMAP. It ran from 1978 to 2006 and was issued fortnightly for most of that time.

Smash Hits was founded in 1978 by Nick Logan, who had previously edited the New Musical Express during one of its most creative periods and went on to create '80s fashion bible The Face.

After releasing a test issue in September 1978, with Plastic Bertrand on the front and a centre spread of Sham 69, the first issue was published in November 1978 and featured Blondie on the cover. The publication was initially monthly but switched to fortnightly after only three issues, which it remained until its demise. The backbone of the magazine in its early years, and one of its major early selling points, was the publication of Top 20 song lyrics.

Always loved Smash Hits along with another magazine called Number 1 I always bought thse on the day of release. As I got older I also bought NME but never gave up reading Smash Hits. I Managed to find some of the magazines from 83 and 84 which I will put up here in the coming months. But for now I wanted to let people know of a great blog that is dedicated to Smash Hits. This issue has been posted on the site so if you are interested go on over to

and check out the site. I am also thinking about setting up my own fan site. When I do I will let people know. In the mean time click the link below to download this issue. Enjoy.

Pop Quiz

Pop Quiz was a British television quiz programme that originally aired on BBC1 from 4 July 1981 to 28 December 1984 with a Top of the Pops special from 4 January 1994 hosted by Mike Read.

It was then revived from 21 May to 9 July 1994 on the same channel but this time hosted by Chris Tarrant. It was revived again on Red TV from 14 June 2008 to 30 August 2008 with Mike Read returning as host.

We recently watched an episode from Christmas 1983 which brought back memories of the program that I remember watching as a kid like many others out there. I decided to see what was available on You Tube and found the first epiosde, which will be 30 years old. Don't remember if I watched this episode but decided to share this with everyone out there. Enjoy.

Here is an episode of the weekly Pop Quiz. This is the first episode which aired on 4th July 1981 and featured the following

Team One:
Roger Taylor - Suzi Quatro - Cozy Powell

Team Two:
Paul Jones - Chris Neil - David Grant

Have to say that the first part of part 1 is not in the best quality. However it is still great to watch.

Soft Cell - Say Hello Wave Goodbye

Soft Cell released 'Say hello wave goodbye' as their fifth single in early 1982. It was the last track on their 1981 album 'Non-stop erotic cabaret'. The song's title is a reference to The Beatles' song 'Hello, Goodbye'.

The 12" single included a nine minute version with an extended clarinet solo and instrumental parts.

The single version basically cuts the extended version of the 12" single into two parts, in which the first part becomes the instrumental version on the B-side, the second part is the single version on the A-side.

Soft Cell reached third place in the UK singles chart with this, one of their most acclaimed tracks in their career. It was covered by English singer David Gray in 1999.
