Echo And The Bunnymen - Rescue

'Rescue' is the second single released by the band Echo and the Bunnymen. It was released on 5 May 1980 and subsequently included on the Crocodiles album, which was released on 18 July 1980.

 It was the band's first single to chart, reaching number 62 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also their first release on the newly formed Korova label.

The single was reissued as a limited edition 7" single on 4 December 2006 on the same label and with the same catalogue number, KOW 1, and reached number 177 on the UK Singles Chart. A promo 7" version was also released by Korova in January 1983.

The song was covered by the Scottish rock group Idlewild on their 2000 single 'These Wooden Ideas'.

Hazel O'Conner - Sons And Lovers - Album

Hazel O'Conner released her second studio album entitled 'Sons And Lovers' in 1980.  Following on from the success of her previous album 'Breaking Glass', 'Sons And Lovers' failed to enter the UK Album Charts.


Apparently the album was inspired by a trip to a night club in London's West End where O'Connor met a lot of bizarre looking people


The album did produce one hit single being 'D-Day' which made it to number 10 in the UK Singles Charts. Two further singles were released but not in the UK.  'Zoo' was released in Germany only while 'Do What you do' was released in Europe.

Nightmares In Wax - Birth Of A Nation

It was only after rehearsing in 1977 with some friends that Pete Burns realized he really did have a powerful singing voice, and his first band was an outfit he formed with friends Julian Cope, Pete Wylie, and Phil Hurst.

Dubbing themselves The Mystery Girls, they played only one gig (opening for Sham 69 at Eric's in Liverpool in November 1977) before disintegrating.

Burns returned in 1979 with a new band, Nightmares in Wax, featuring a gothic post-punk sound, with backing from Hurst, keyboardist Martin Healy, bassist Walter Ogden, and guitarist Mick Reid.

Nightmares in Wax played their first gig at Eric's in February 1979, and were signed to the associated Eric's Records label, although their only recording, a three-track 7 inch EP entitled 'Birth of a Nation', was released in 1980 by Inevitable Records.

Two 12-inch singles were released featuring tracks from the 'Birth Of A Nation' single.
The first featured the two tracks from the EP, 'Black Leather' and 'Shangri-La', while the second featured all the tracks and was released in 1985).

The EP featured 'Black Leather', which halfway through turned into K.C. & the Sunshine Band's 'That's the Way' (a song later revived by Dead or Alive).

Sandii And The Sunsetz - Eating Pleasure - Album

Right at the end of 1979 the Y.M.O. and Sandii began to record her debut for Alfa Records, 'Eating Pleasure', featuring lyrics by Yellow Magic Orchestra lyricist, Chris Mosdell, who, as he had done for YMO's Solid State Survivor also wrote the bulk of the lyrics for 'Eating Pleasure'.


At this point Makoto also wound up the Sunset Gang and Sandii & The Sunsetz were born. The two groups had the same members, but Sandii became lead vocalist.

The Buggles - Videoteque

Dollar released their 4th single 'Videoteque' in 1982.

Produced by Trevor Horn this single had previously beed recorded by Horn previous group The Buggles.

Recorded as a demo in 1980 it is great to hear the original version of what became a big hit for dollar.

Sylk - Lu La Lay (Spirit Of Love)

'Lu La Lay (Spirit Of Love)' is a single released in 1980 by the band Sylk.

The band consisted of Joanne Whyte and Lee John (from Imagination, going under the name Lee instead of the now familiar Leee).

The single is very much in the style of the Goomby Dance Band but enjoyable and great to hear something very different from the Imagination singles as Leee singles different on this track.

I do have a request.  I do not have the B-Side of this single.

The B-Side was called 'Bobby Joe'.  so if any one has this it would be great to have it.

OMD - Free Artefact - The Unreleased '78 Tapes

OMD released their second album 'Organisation' in 1980.

A 7 inch bonus EP entitled ‘Free Artefact - The Unreleased '78 Tapes’ were given away with the first 10,000 copies of the album.

The album came in a grey sleeve with a sticker stating 'Free Artefact - The Unreleased '78 Tapes'.

As well as a merchandising insert the bonus 7 inch EP  - omd dep 2 - featured some previously unreleased tracks.

The tracks were actually recorded during a gig at Eric's Club, Liverpool and feature a spoken introduction by Dave Fairbairn.

These tracks reflected OMD's early collage approach in which excerpts taken from radio and TV broadcasts would be cut and edited into songs. Once When I Was Six features dialogue taken from the TV drama series The Pallisers (1974) based on the the novels of Anthony Trollope.

Berlin Blondes - Berlin Blondes - Album

Another one from the Berlin Blondes.  This time it is thier one and only album release.

Released in 1980 and titled after the bands name, the album 'Berlin Blondes' didn't do at all well in the charts as it failed to enter the charts. 

As the album and singles didn't sell well the band was dropped from the record label.

Again the album cover made me stop to buy as I loved the first single and felt that the album would live up to that and I wasnt wrong.

I do have a request. I was going to put up the second single 'Framework' but my copy of the B-side 'Zero song - Instrumental' keeps jumping and is no good.  anyone have this and is willing to share I can then complet the back catalogue on this band.  Thank yu all in advance.

Spider released their first album in 1980 entitled'Spider' under the Dreamlands Records Label.

The album failed to chart in the UK but managed to make it to number 130 in the Us Album charts.

Spider - New Romance (Its a Mystery)

Spider released their second single in 1980 entitled 'New Romance (It's A Mystery). 

Taken from the bands debut album 'Spider' the single made it to number 39 in the US Hot 100 and became the biggest hit in the bands short run.

Neon - Making Waves

Pria to Tears For Fears the due Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith met as teenagers in their home city of Bath, Somerset, in southwest England.

The duo became session musicians for the 80's band Neon, where they first met future Tears For Fears drummer Manny Elias.

Neon also featured Manny Elias, Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher. Byrne and Fisher went on to become Naked Eyes.

The bands first single entitled 'Making Waves' was released in 1980 and didnt trouble the charts. 

I admit that this is a single that I got because I was into Tears for Fears at the time and not becouse of the cover. I personnaly prefer the B-Side of the single than the A-Side but it is still interesting to listen to earlier material from a duo that went onto to big things later on.

I do have a request.  I never managed to ge tthe bands second single 'Remote Control'.  If anyone has this and is willing to share let me know as I would love to finally hear this.

Berlin Blondes - Science

Berlin Blondes was an early Glasgow synthpop band, who formed in 1978 and released a major-label album in 1980. Members went on to Altered Images and Endgames.

The original lineup was Steven Bonomi (vocals), Robert Farrell (guitar, synth), David Rudden (bass) and Jim Spender (keyboards), with a drum machine.

The band signed to EMI in 1980. Before the album's release, Rudden left and was replaced by Nick Clark from Cuban Heels (Clark is credited on the album, though Rudden played.), and Spender left to join Altered Images.

In 1980 the band released their first single entitled 'Science'.

The single didn't trouble the charts.

I remember that the reason I got this was the cover was so strange.  New Romantics were in due to Adam Ant so the cover was very entising to me.  I have always loved strange so this was a great find as the single as great to.

Classix Nouveaux - The Robots Dance

In 1980 Classix Nouveaux recorded a four track session for Capital Radio and one track, 'Robots Dance', was played regularly by DJ Nicky Horne.

This got the interest of A and R at United Artists, but as negotiations dragged on Classix decided to release the track as their debut single on their own ESP label.

'Robot's Dance' was released on 29 August and they also performed for the first time on television on Thames TV in London.

'Robot's Dance' spent eleven weeks on the UK Indie Chart, reaching number 22, and became a popular alternative dance floor track.

Shalamar - Three For Love - Album

'Three for Love is the fourth album by American R and B group Shalamar, released in 1980 on the SOLAR label. It was produced by Leon Sylvers III and features the 'classic' Shalamar line-up (Jeffrey Daniel, Howard Hewett and Jody Watley).

Three for Love has been certified Gold in the United States for sales of over 500,000. It peaked at number 8 on the R and B chart and number 40 on the Billboard chart.

The album to chart on the U Album Charts.

In 2002, Three for Love was re-released by Sanctuary Records in the United Kingdom in a two-for-one CD format with Shalamar's previous album Big Fun.

Dire Straits - Making Movies - Album

'Making Movies' is the third album by English rock band Dire Straits, released in 1980.

The title of the album comes from a line in the song 'Skateaway' and the unreleased song 'Making Movies'.

Rolling Stone ranked the album number 52 in their survey of the "100 Best Albums of the 80s".

Making Movies was the biggest selling album in Italy in 1981 with one million copies; in Europe the album sold 3.8 million copies.

It was remastered and released with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 for most of the world outside the U.S. and on September 19, 2000 in the United States.

The songs 'Making Movies' and 'Suicide Towers' were recorded during the sessions and were never officially released. They do however appear on bootlegs.

In the U the album made it to number 4 on the Album charts and spent 252 weeks on the Album charts.

Pat Benatar - Crimes Of Passion - Album

'Crimes of Passion' is the second album by Pat Benatar, released in 1980.

It peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard 200 and produced the hits 'Hit Me with Your Best Shot' (US Number 9), 'You Better Run' (US Number 42), 'Treat Me Right' (US Number 18), plus a cover of Kate Bush's international hit, 'Wuthering Heights'.

Crimes of Passion is Benatar's highest selling album to date, certifying 5x platinum (for sales of 5 million units)

'Hell Is for Children', which was not released as an A-side single, was also a hit on album-rock stations. However, a live version of this song from her Live from Earth album was released as the B-side of her 'Love Is a Battlefield' single three years later.

The music video for the song 'You Better Run' was the second music video ever aired on MTV in 1981.

This album featured Myron Grombacher on drums, replacing Glen Alexander Hamilton.

Sheena Easton - 9 to 5 / Morning Train

'9 to 5' is the title of a popular song written by British songwriter Florrie Palmer and recorded by Sheena Easton in 1980, becoming her biggest hit.

It peaked at number three in the United Kingdom in August 1980 and was released in the United States in February 1981 (retitled 'Morning Train' to avoid confusion with Dolly Parton’s '9 to 5'), where it reached number one.

Early in 1981, EMI Records decided to launch Easton in the US and released '9 to 5' as her debut single. Easton's song went to number 1 on both the U.S. pop and adult contemporary charts; it remained at the top for two weeks on Billboard's pop chart. On Billboard's 1981 year-end charts, it came in as the twelfth-biggest pop and thirteenth-biggest AC hit of the year 1981. It also topped the RPM magazine pop and AC charts in Canada, reigning over the former for two weeks in May 1981.

The song is about a woman who waits at home all day for her man to come home from work. The music video was filmed on the Bluebell Railway, a heritage line running between East and West Sussex in England. The video stars London and South Western Railway No. 488, a preserved LSWR 0415 Class locomotive.

Now That's Embarrassing: The 80's

Now That's Embarrassing: The 80's is another in the long line of Friday night list shows broadcast at 9pm on Channel Five in the UK.

True to its name, Now That's Embarrassing: The 80s features the most embarrassing or 'cheesy' aspects from 1980s culture including the Minipops (at number 12), MC Miker G & DJ Sven, Australian soap operas and the Sinclair C5.

As with other shows of this type - such as Channel 4's rival strand of the 2000s: the 100 Greatest shows - this strand features a rundown of popular clips with a number of vox pops from cultural historians and celebrities from the era in question.

ELO - All Over The World

'All Over the World' is a song by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). It is featured in the 1980 feature film Xanadu in a sequence with the film's stars Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, and Michael Beck. The song also appears on the soundtrack album Xanadu.

Released hot on the heels of the single 'Xanadu' (a collaboration with Olivia Newton-John), this was the third Top 20 ELO single released from the 1980 soundtrack, peaking at number 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In the UK the single made it to number 11 on the Singles Chart.

One section of the lyrics lists a number of famous cities; London, Hamburg, Paris, Rome, Rio, Hong Kong, Tokyo, L.A., Detroit, New York, Amsterdam, Monte Carlo and Shard End. The last place named in the list is a suburb of Birmingham, England and also the place where Jeff Lynne was born.
