Links Are Dead - I Know

I keep getting Emails from people asking me to re-upload the links and music etc. I think people are just getting to those particular pages so are not reading the reason for the dead links.

So I am putting this in place so hopefully people will read it and stop Emailing me about it.

The reason the links are dead is that my account with Media Fire has been closed with all 11,000 files lost. That is why you can not download the things and No I can not re-upload them.

Eventually I will start doing that again when I have found something suitable. In the meantime this blog will be information only blog.

Thank you all

Michaael

Culture Club - Gusto Blusto

In the US 'Gusto Blusto' was chosen as the second single released from Culture Clubs 1986 album 'From Luxury To Heartache'.

The song failed to chart and a music video was never made for the song.

'From Luxury To Heartache' was a deliberate departure for Culture Club, a move away from the reggae-flavoured pop of their previous releases into dance-oriented music.

Veteran pop and R&B producer Arif Mardin, replaced Steve Levine, in a bid to revitalise the band's sound.

Due to lead singer Boy George's growing addiction to drugs, recordings dragged on for so long that Mardin had to disband the sessions and leave it up to engineer Lew Hahn to record the final vocals.

Songs like 'Gusto Blusto' and 'Reasons' took days for the addicted singer to finish.

Culture Club - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me

'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me' is a song recorded by Culture Club and was released as a single from the album 'Kissing to Be Clever'. Throughout the years, the song has been covered by many artists.

The third single from the band, the sweet Lovers' Rock style proved their commercial breakthrough. Initially picked up by BBC Radio 2 the song became a major hit after their memorable debut performance on Top of the Pops, which they got thanks to Shakin' Stevens being ill and not able to appear, leading the song to become a UK number 1 single for three weeks in October 1982. The song was their breakthrough in America, too, and it reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in March 1983. It was also number 1 in Australia and more than twenty countries worldwide.

Originally, its B-side in many countries was a dub version of the song. In USA, it was the song 'You Know I'm Not Crazy'. On the 12 inch, an additional b-side was the track 'Love Is Cold (You Were Never No Good)'.

It was the song that put the name Culture Club on the worldwide map. It was also their first single in United States and Canada.

In the video for this song, lead singer Boy George wears a shirt bearing approximately the Hebrew words for "Culture Club" (the shirt actual meaning is "תרבות אגדה" Hebrew for "culture legend"). Mikey Craig was not in the video, he was replaced by his brother Greg.

The song was remixed a couple of times. It was remixed by different DJ, like Quivver and Kinky Roland, around 1998, to promote a Culture Club compilation called "Greatest Moments" and the single 'I Just Wanna Be Loved'. It was also remixed and presented in different remixes on Culture Club's 2002 Box Set. The original demo version, without the bridge, was also included on this boxset.

Re-released in a reggaeton remix in France, it was again a top 20 hit in the summer of 2005.

Culture Club - White Boy

In 1981, Boy George occasionally sang with the group Bow Wow Wow under the stage name "Lieutenant Lush". However, his popularity in this role caused friction with the group's actual lead singer, Annabella Lwin.

After his tenure with the group, George decided to start his own band and enlisted Mikey Craig. Next came Jon Moss, and finally Roy Hay. The group recorded demos, which were paid for by EMI Records, but the label was unimpressed and decided not to sign the group. Virgin Records heard the demos and signed the group in the UK, and Epic Records released their albums in the US as Virgin did not have a U.S. presence at the time.

1982 saw the band release of their first single 'White Boy'. Although the song failed to reach the US or UK Top 100, George was still happy because "5000 people bought my song and didn't even know me".

Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas

Band Aid were a British and Irish charity supergroup, founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in order to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia by releasing the record 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' for the Christmas market. The single surpassed the hopes of the producers to become the Christmas number one on that release. Two subsequent re-recordings of the song to raise further money for charity also topped the charts.

The original was produced by Midge Ure. The 12" version was mixed by Trevor Horn. The name 'Band Aid' was chosen as a pun on the name of a well known brand of adhesive bandage, also referring to musicians working as a band to provide aid and alluding to the fact that any help stemming from their efforts is likened to a band-aid on a very serious wound. The group has formed on three occasions, each time from the most successful British and Irish pop music performers of the time, to record the same song at the same time of year.

The original 1984 Feed The World logo was based on a pencil sketch by Bob Geldof after watching a BBC television news report by Michael Buerk from famine-stricken Ethiopia. Geldof was so moved by the plight of starving children that he decided to try and raise money using his contacts in pop music. Geldof enlisted the help of Midge Ure, from the group Ultravox, to help produce a charity record.

Ure took Geldof's lyrics, and created the melody and backing track for the record. Geldof called many of the most popular British and Irish performers of the time (Kool & The Gang and Jody Watley were the only Americans present at the original recording), persuading them to give their time free. His one criterion for selection was how famous they were, in order to maximise sales of the record. He then kept an appointment to appear on a show on BBC Radio 1, with Richard Skinner, but instead of promoting the new Boomtown Rats material as planned, he announced the plan for Band Aid.

The recording studio gave Band Aid no more than 24 free hours to record and mix the record, on 25 November 1984. The recording took place between 11am and 7pm, and was filmed by director Nigel Dick to be released as the pop video though some basic tracks had been recorded the day before at Midge Ure's home studio. The first tracks to be recorded were the group / choir choruses which were filmed by the international press. The footage was rushed to newsrooms where it aired while the remainder of the recording process continued. Later drums by Phil Collins were recorded, including the memorable opening 'African Drum' beat. But in reality, the introduction of the song features a slowed down sample from a Tears for Fears' track called 'The Hurting', released in 1983.

Tony Hadley, of Spandau Ballet, was the first to record his vocal, while a section sung by Status Quo was deemed unusable, and replaced with section comprising Paul Weller, Sting, and Glenn Gregory. Paul Young has since admitted, in a documentary, that he knew his opening lines were written for David Bowie, who was not able to make the recording but made a contribution to the B-side (Bowie performed his lines at the Live Aid concert the following year). Boy George arrived last at 6pm, after Geldof woke him up by 'phone to have him flown over from New York on Concorde to record his solo part. (At the time Culture Club was in the middle of a US tour.)

The following morning, Geldof appeared on the Radio 1 breakfast show with Mike Read, to promote the record further and promise that every penny would go to the cause. This led to a stand-off with the British Government, who refused to waive the VAT on the sales of the single. Geldof made the headlines by publicly standing up to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and, sensing the strength of public feeling, the government backed down and donated the tax back to the charity. The record was released on 29 November, and went straight to No. 1 in the UK singles chart, outselling all the other records in the chart put together. It became the fastest- selling single of all time in the UK, selling a million copies in the first week alone. It stayed at Number 1 for five weeks, selling over three million copies and becoming easily the biggest-selling single of all time in the UK. It has since been surpassed by Elton John's 'Candle In The Wind 1997' (his tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales) but it is likely to keep selling in different versions for many years to come.

After Live Aid, 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' was re-released in late 1985 in a set that included a special-edition 'picture disc' version, modeled after the Live Aid logo with 'Band' in place of 'Live'. An added bonus, 'One Year On' (a statement from Geldof and Ure on the telephone) was available as a b-side. 'One Year On' can also be found in transcript form in a booklet which was included in the DVD set of Live Aid, the first disc of which features the BBC news report, as well as the Band Aid video.

The original Band Aid ensemble consisted of (in sleeve order):

Culture Club - The War Song

'The War Song' which was released from Culture Club's third studio album 'Waking Up with the House on Fire'. The single was not well received with the critics however it became a number 2 hit in the UK singles chart and a top 20 hit in the US in the Autumn of 1984. Even though the song did not receive the attention it deserved I loved this song when it was released and it quickly became one of my favouite Culture Club songs.

Culture Club - From Luxury To Heartache - Album

'From Luxury to Heartache' is the name of Culture Clubs 4th album which was released in 1986. The album was a deliberate departure for Culture Club, a move away from the reggae-flavoured pop of their previous releases into dance-oriented music.

Following the release of the album, rumours of George's heroin addiction began to circulate in the tabloids, and by the summer of 1986, he announced that he was indeed addicted to drugs. In July, he was arrested by the British police for possession of cannabis. Several days later, keyboardist Michael Rudetsky, who played on the album and had co-written 'Sexuality' with George, was found dead of a heroin overdose in George's home.

Despite selling a little less than a million records worldwide and chart success with the opening track 'Move Away', Boy George decided for a solo career within a year of the album's release. 'God Thank You Woman' was the second single in UK but only reached number 31 in the chart while in the US 'Gusto Blusto' was chosen, but didn't chart (the single didn't have a video and probably this is the reason that it did not enter the US chart). The next single 'Heaven's Children' was planned to be released in July but after the lack of success of 'God Thank You Woman' the release was cancelled. The album is a departure from the big sellers that Culture Club came to expect. Even Helen Terry, who I consider the 5th member of Culture Club, isn't present as much as on previous albums. Jocelyn Brown assisted with the backing vocals on this release. However, this is a good album or is it becouse I am biased?
