The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love

'You Can't Hurry Love' is 1966 song originally released by The Supremes for the Motown label.

Written and produced by Motown production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, the song topped the United States Billboard pop singles chart, in the UK in the top 5, and in the Australian Singles Chart in the top 10, released and peaking late summer/early autumn in 1966.

Sixteen years later, it would again become a number-one hit when Phil Collins rerecorded the song. It reached number-one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks beginning in January 1983.

The song itself, a memory of a mother's words of encouragement ("My mama said 'you can't hurry love/No you just have to wait'") telling her daughter that with patience she will find that special someone one day, is an example of the strong influence of gospel music present in much of R and B and soul music.

'You Can't Hurry Love' also showcases the developing sound of The Supremes, who were progressing from their earlier teen-pop into more mature themes and musical arrangements. This song and 'You Keep Me Hangin' On' were finished together; when it came time to choose which single would be issued first, Motown's Quality Control department chose 'You Can't Hurry Love.'

Written and produced by Motown's main production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland, 'You Can't Hurry Love' is one of the signature Supremes songs, and also one of Motown's signature releases. The single became The Supremes' seventh number-one hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for two weeks, from September 4, 1966 to September 17, 1966, and reaching number one on the soul chart for two weeks. The girl group performed the song on the CBS variety program The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday, September 25, 1966.

'You Can't Hurry Love' was the second single from the Supremes' album The Supremes A' Go-Go. It reached the number 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in the United States, and number 3 in the United Kingdom. The Supremes' version of the song is honored by inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's permanent collection of 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

The Supremes also released their own Italian cover of the song: L'amore verrà (Love will come).

Diana Ross - I'm Coming Out

'I'm Coming Out' is a hit single released by Motown singer Diana Ross in 1980, written and produced by Chic members Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers for her album 'Diana'.

In 1979, Ross commissioned Chic founders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards to create material for a new album, following the success of her final Ashford & Simpson-composed and produced LP, 'The Boss' after taking her daughters to see the band in concert.

Rodgers got the idea for 'I'm Coming Out' after noticing three different drag queens dressed as Diana Ross at a New York club called the GG Barnum Room. The lyrics hold an additional meaning to Ross, as she was leaving Motown Records and "coming out" from under the thumb of Berry Gordy.

Lionel Richie and Diana Ross - Endless Love

'Endless Love' is a song originally recorded as a duet between soul singers Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, who wrote the song. In this ballad, the singers declare their "endless love" for one another. It was covered by soul singer Luther Vandross with pop/R&B singer Mariah Carey, and also by country music singer Kenny Rogers.

Ross and Richie recorded the song for the Motown, and it was used as the theme for the film Endless Love starring Brooke Shields. Produced by Richie and arranged by Gene Page, it was released as a single from the film's soundtrack in 1981. While the film Endless Love was a failure, the song became the second biggest-selling single of the year (first was 'Physical' by Olivia Newton-John) in the U.S. and landed at number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100, where it stayed for nine weeks from August 9 to October 10, 1981. It also topped the Billboard R&B chart and the Adult Contemporary chart, and landed at number 7 in the UK Singles Chart.

The soulful composition became the biggest-selling single of Ross' career, while it was one of several hits for Richie as the 1980s progressed. Ross recorded a solo version of the song for her first RCA Records album, Why Do Fools Fall in Love?, but the famous version was her last hit on Motown. The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Richie, and was the second song with which Ross was involved that was nominated for an Oscar. It also won a 1982 American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single.

The song was included in Adam Sandler's movie Happy Gilmore when Happy and his girlfriend Virginia are ice skating, and the song begins to play. Virginia says to Happy "I thought we were just going to be friends." To which he responds, "Friends listen to Endless Love in the dark."

The song was included as well in the third season of Friends, in which Phoebe walks into Chandler and Joey´s flat, just to find Chandler singing the song and holding Lionel Ritchie's first album, even though the song is included in his fourth album, Back to Front and also in a special 1981 single.

On an episode of The Steve Harvey Show, Steve and Regina perform the song at a janitor's urging (who thought they were Ross and Richie); at the end of the song, the janitor quips "no wonder you guys haven't had a hit in a while."

The song was also one of the most popular wedding dedication songs in the 1980s.
