Paul Johnson - No More Tomorrows

Paul Johnson began singing in school and church while living in New York during the 1970's and later worked with one of the UK’s pioneering contemporary Gospel bands, Paradise and also sang with the London Community Gospel Choir.

Produced by Jolley And Swain 'No More Tomorrows' was released in 1989 and managed to make it to number 67 in the UK Single Chart.

I do have a request.  I had not heard of this song or the previous post before until my partner Mark played them.  Really liked them so raided his collection to put up here.

However he didn't have the B-Sides to this single called 'I Don't Care' and 'Hold On I'm Commin'.  If any one  has these then please let me know so I can add them here.

Also if anyone has his 2 albums for download let me know as I would like to hear them.  I just love discovering new stuff.

Donna Summer - I Don't Wanna Get Hurt

'I Don't Wanna Get Hurt' is the second single from the album Another Place and Time by Donna Summer.

The whole album was written and produced by British team Stock Aitken & Waterman (SAW) and was mainly in the style of their "hit factory" sound.

This song was remixed for its release as a single, and in the UK became the Top 10 follow-up to its predecessor, the hit 'This Time I Know It's for Real.'

SAW gained most of their success in Europe and a lot of their material was never aimed at the U.S. market, so this single was never released there.

Severed Heads - Rotund For Success

Severed Heads was an Australian band formed in Sydney in 1979, and as such, they were one of the longest-lasting Aussie post-punk bands, not really calling it a day until 2004.

Rotund For Success was originally released via the Nettwerk and Volition labels in 1989, and saw Severed Heads flirt outrageously with mainstream success. Although all material was written by chief Head Tom Ellard, it were Robert Racic's seamless mixes of slinky dance tracks Greater Reward and All Saint's Day which set the album apart. Elsewhere, the most obviously 'Severed' of all the tracks are Rotund For Success, First Steps, 7 Miles and Midget Sings.

Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes

'In Your Eyes' is a song by musician Peter Gabriel from his 1986 album So.

It reached number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks and number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November, 1986.

It was not released as a single in the UK.

Gabriel later released an extended version of the song which was nearly 9 minutes in length (as compared to the original 5:29 version that appears on the album).

In 1989 the single was again released in the US where it made it to number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song was the finale of the Secret World Tour, and is the final track on the 1994 Secret World Live album, where it is over 11 minutes long and includes the extra lyrics from the Special Mix, in addition to solos by the the other singers and players.

It was included on the US version of his 2003 compilation Hit, but not on the European or Japanese versions.

In 2005, after 19 years of accumulated sales, the song brought Gabriel his first Gold single, certified in the U.S. by the RIAA.

The B-Side to this single was Biko. This has been released around the workd previously and also features on my blog so I decieded not to include it in this post as there was no difference in the track.

In 2002 Darren Hayes released his cover of the song on the CD single Version. I have to say that this is one of the better cover versions of the song I have heard as it gave the song something new with more emotion.

Martika - I Feel The Earth Move

'I Feel the Earth Move' is a song written and recorded by pop singer-songwriter Carole King. A track on King's album Tapestry, the song is one half of the double A-sided single, the flip side which was 'It's Too Late'. Together, both 'I Feel the Earth Move' and 'It's Too Late' became among the biggest mainstream pop hits for the year 1971.

Released in autumn 1989, 'I Feel the Earth Move' was the third single from Martika's self-titled debut, Martika. 'I Feel the Earth Move' reached the number 25 on the pop charts in the U.S., and number 7 in the UK and number 2 in Australia.

The high energy music video was shot during the promotional tour for this album. The song's tenure on the U.S. charts was cut short when radio stations pulled it from their playlists in the wake of the 1989 San Francisco earthquake.

Martika - Toy Soldiers

'Toy Soldiers' is a song by Martika appearing on her eponymous debut album in 1989 as a ballad. The single was a number-one hit in the United States. It was sampled by Eminem in his 2004 single, 'Like Toy Soldiers'. The song's subject matter concerns drug abuse and how it can devastate the lives of the user and those who care about them.

Martika is the only one who sings throughout the song, although she is joined on the chorus by some of her former castmates from Kids Incorporated, including the Black Eyed Peas's Stacy Ferguson, Rahsaan Patterson, Renee Sands, as well as later cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt and Devyn Puett, as backup vocalists.

The song spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and New Zealand while reaching number five in both the United Kingdom and Australia. When it spent its first week at number one, it had leapt over Madonna's 'Express Yourself' and kept that song from reaching the top spot. On Billboard's year-end chart for 1989, 'Toy Soldiers' placed number 29. It was Martika's only number-one single in the U.S., and her highest-ranking single in the United Kingdom. The single was certified Gold in the United States by the RIAA.

Lisa Stansfield - This Is The Right Time

'This Is the Right Time' is a song by British singer Lisa Stansfield, released during the summer of 1989 from her first album, Affection.

The song became her first single to reach the UK singles chart, where it reached number 13 and remained on the chart for eight weeks.

In the U.S., the single was released in the fall of 1990, where it peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The song also reached number 1 on the American dance chart, her second song to top this chart ('All Around the World' had gone to number 1 on the dance chart earlier in 1990).

Stevie Nicks - Rooms On Fire

'Rooms on Fire' is a song by the American singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks. Released in May 1989, it was the first single to be taken from Nicks' fourth solo album, The Other Side of the Mirror.
The song was quite successful on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching number 16 in both the UK (Nicks' first ever UK Top 40 solo hit and her highest chart position there to date) and the U.S. Billboard Chart, and also topped the U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

'Rooms on Fire' was performed sporadically at Nicks' live concerts up until New Year's Eve of 1999, though has yet to be played live again.

In a 1989 interview, Nicks gave personal insight as to the meaning of 'Rooms on Fire':

"Rooms on Fire is about a girl who goes through a life like I have gone through, where she finally accepts the idea that there never will be those other things in her life. She will never be married, she will never have children, she will never do those [that] part of life."

In the music video, Nicks is seen holding a baby dressed in white, played by her goddaughter.

Now That's Embarrassing: The 80's

Now That's Embarrassing: The 80's is another in the long line of Friday night list shows broadcast at 9pm on Channel Five in the UK.

True to its name, Now That's Embarrassing: The 80s features the most embarrassing or 'cheesy' aspects from 1980s culture including the Minipops (at number 12), MC Miker G & DJ Sven, Australian soap operas and the Sinclair C5.

As with other shows of this type - such as Channel 4's rival strand of the 2000s: the 100 Greatest shows - this strand features a rundown of popular clips with a number of vox pops from cultural historians and celebrities from the era in question.

Hue And Cry - Looking For Linda

Hue and Cry are a pop duo formed in 1983 in Coatbridge, Scotland by brothers Pat Kane (vocals) and Greg Kane (Music/Production).

In 1989 the band released their 7th single entitled 'Looking For Linda'.

Released from the bands third Album 'Bitter Suite' the single made it to number 15 in the Uk Singles Chart.

Liza Minnelli - Love Pains

'Love Pains' is the fourth and final single from Liza Minnelli's Results album.

It was released in the UK on April 1990 by Epic Records. The track was produced by the Pet Shop Boys and Julian Mendelsohn.

The single's b-side is Liza's take on the Pet Shop Boys single 'Rent', which also features on Results.

Steve "Silk" Hurley was commissioned to create several mixes for 'Love Pains' which are spread across the single's various formats.

The single almost reached the top 40, stalling at number 41. This was 21 places higher than the last single, 'So Sorry, I Said'.

Live Report - Why Do I Alway's Get It Wrong

'Why Do I Always Get it Wrong?', written by Brian Hodgson and composed by John Beeby, was the United Kingdom's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1989, performed by the sextet Live Report, led by Ray Caruana.

Live Report won the right to perform at Lausanne by winning the UK national final, A Song for Europe, where they were the sixth act to perform.

At Lausanne, the song was performed seventh on the night. At the end of judging that evening, 'Why Do I Always Get it Wrong?' took the second-place slot with 130 points. Norway, Portugal, Luxembourg, France and Germany all gave their 12 point designations to the UK that evening. Despite losing the contest by six points to Yugoslavia's Riva with 'Rock Me,' the UK actually received the most sets of 12 point designations for the evening (Yugoslavia received the 12 points from four countries).

For the second year in a row, the UK entered a ballad at the Eurovision final. This song revolved around a man who took off running "where his lover won't find him," as she causes him to hurt, and leaving her presence for good is the only way to stop the pain. Crying out against his illogical love for the woman who has treated him so badly, Caruana asks, "Why do I always get it wrong?"

After Eurovision, the song placed at number 73 on the UK Singles Chart.

Was Not Was - Walk The Dinosaur

'Walk the Dinosaur' is a hit single recorded and released by the band Was (Not Was) in 1987, later featured on their hit 1988 album, What Up, Dog?

When released in the UK in 1987, the song reached number 10 on the charts, becoming the group's first Top 10 hit in the UK.

After the music video to the song, which featured four half-naked cavewomen dancing to the song, a Flintstones-style TV playing clips from Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur, and then modern people dancing to the song in the "Everybody kill the dinosaur" part, received heavy rotation on MTV, the song reached number 7 on the U.S. charts in 1989, two years after its UK success. The song is the biggest hit single for the band in their home country.

Riva - Rock Me

'Rock Me' was the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 1989, performed by Riva, representing Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the first and only time that this country would win the Contest. The song was performed in Serbo-Croatian.

The song's victory led to international awareness of Yugoslav rock.

Jermaine Stewart - Is It Really Love

Jermaine Stewart released his 10th single 'Is It Really Love' in 1989.

Released from his 3rd album Say It Again the single was released 2 years after the release of the album.

Maybe because of this the single was not a hit as it did not chart any where.

Boy George - Boyfriend - Album

Boy George's third solo album was entitled 'Boyfriend' and was released in 1989 by Virgin in Europe and Japan only.

This album, just like 'Tense Nervous Headache' before it, died on the charts and was quickly deleted by Virgin.

Some of the tracks were remixed and appeared on the USA Only 'High Hat' album.

'Don't Take My Mind On A Trip', 'You found Another Guy', 'Whether They Like It Or Not' and 'No Clause 28' were all singles from the album.

Paula Abdul - Opposites Attract

'Opposites Attract' is a song recorded by Paula Abdul, featured on her debut album Forever Your Girl. It was written and produced by Oliver Leiber, who came up with the title after browsing a bookstore.

Vocals on the song, in addition to Abdul, were provided by Bruce DeShazer and Marv Gunn, aka 'The Wild Pair'.

'Opposites Attract' was the sixth and final single from the album, and achieved success in many countries, including the US and Australia where it was a number 1 hit.

The lyrics are about a couple who love each other despite being different in just about every way possible.

The song is distinctive for its colorful music video created and directed by Candace Reckinger & Michael Patterson, in which Paula dances with cartoon character MC Skat Kat, voiced by 'The Wild Pair'. The music video adds an intro rap performed by Romany Malco. An additional rap was provided by Derrick 'Delite' Stevens for the Street mix version of the song, which was edited for the 7 inch and video.

The idea of MC Skat Kat came from the Gene Kelly movie Anchors Aweigh, where Kelly dances with Jerry, the mouse from the Tom and Jerry cartoon series. Paula even choreographed the animated character's moves to match her live-action dance moves in the video. MC Skat Kat was animated by members of the Disney animation team, working outside the studio between major projects, under the direction of Chris Bailey. Also shown in the video are Micetro, Taboo, and Fatz, yet their names weren't revealed until the release of The Adventures of MC Skat Kat and the Stray Mob.

The video won Abdul a Grammy award in 1991 for 'Best Short Form Music Video'.

'Opposites Attract' became one of the most popular R&B and dance-pop singles of 1990.

Although the single was released at the end of 1989, the song itself is considered one of the first popular songs of the 1990s. 'Opposites Attract' also topped the charts in Australia, and peaked at number 2 in the UK. It failed to enter the German Top 10, peaking at number 13.
