XTC - Drums and Wires - Album

Drums and Wires is an XTC album released on 17th August 1979.

It reached Number 34 on the UK album chart, and Number 176 on the U.S. Billboard album charts.

It contained the successful single 'Making Plans for Nigel', which was released on 14th September 1979, and reached Number 17 on the UK singles chart.

It also contained the original recording of 'Ten Feet Tall', a re-recorded version of which was released in March 1980 in the U.S. only, as their first U.S. single, designed to coincide with the band's first American tour.

Certain versions of the album also include 'Life Begins at the Hop', which was released on 27th April 1979, and reached Number 44 on the UK singles chart.

This album was originally released with at least six different track listings in various parts of the world. Some versions contained a two/three-song 7inch single in addition to the 11 or 12 song album. One version moved all of Colin Moulding's songs to side one. The initial US release featured the single version of 'Ten Feet Tall'. Another version of the LP contained 14 songs.

The first 20,000 copies of the LP had a free 7 inch single, 'Chain Of Command' 'Limelight' (Moulding).

The song 'Life Begins at the Hop' (Moulding), released as a 7 inch single before the original LP's release, appears on other versions of the album, either as a substitution, a bonus single, or bonus tracks on CD releases.

XTC - Black Sea - Album

Black Sea is an XTC album released on 12 September 1980.

It spawned five singles—'Generals And Majors' (released 9th August 1980 and reached Number 32 on the UK singles chart and Number 104 on the Billboard Pop chart), 'Towers Of London' (released 10th October 1980 and reached Number 31 on the UK singles chart), 'Sgt. Rock (Is Going To Help Me)' (released 5th December 1980 and reached Number 16 on the UK singles chart), 'Love At First Sight' (released 23rd January 1981 in Canada only) and a re-recording of 'Respectable Street' (released 13th March 1981). The band re-recorded the song to change a few words as per the BBC—who ended up never playing the clean version anyway.

The album reached Number 16 on the UK album chart, Number 41 on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 album chart and Number 1 on the New Zealand album chart.

Considered one of the more consistent albums by the group, Black Sea is more refined and polished than its predecessor, Drums and Wires, although it is still focused on big drums and sharp guitars. Early copies of the album came with the sleeve enclosed in a lime-green paper bag. There was an additional version that came packaged in a black plastic bag with the XTC logo in silver printed on one side.

Virgin media mogul Richard Branson appeared in the 'Generals and Majors' video.

XTC - Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me)

Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me) was the 13th single by the XTC.

Released in December 1980 the single became a hit by getting to number 16, on the 21st February 1981, on the UK Singles Chart and number 20 on the Irish charts.

XTC - Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me) - TOTP Performance

XTC - Wonderland

The single 'Wonderland' by XTC is one of those singles that went unnoticed by the general public. It didn't chart anywhere.

It was a track lifted from the album 'Mummer', which featured a more pastoral sound than any of their previous work.

The track was written by band member Colin Moulding and was later described by band leader Andy Partridge as one of his 'most beautiful melodies'.

This is one of the few songs from the Mummer sessions to feature drummer Terry Chambers prior to his sudden departure from XTC.

XTC - English Settlement - Album

English Settlement is an album by British band XTC released on 12 February 1982. The album reached Number 5 on the UK Album Chart and Number 48 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Arguably XTC's defining album, English Settlement is a significant milestone of the band's ability as musicians and songwriters. Some prevalent lyrical themes include the preservation of buildings, world peace, youthful rebellion, and the frustrations of love.

The cover design is based upon the Uffington White Horse, which is about 6 miles east of Swindon, the home town of XTC.

The album spawned three UK singles: 'Senses Working Overtime' (released on 8th January 1982 and reaching Number 10 on the UK singles chart); 'Ball And Chain' (released 26th February 1982 and reaching Number 58 on the UK singles chart); and 'No Thugs in Our House' (released 14th May 1982).

English Settlement is the last XTC album recorded while Terry Chambers was still a full member, although Chambers did appear on a few tracks of Mummer. The band's retirement from the road, caused by Partridge's nervous breakdown, meant that he could no longer make money as the band's drummer, only as a guest performer.

XTC - Senses Working Overtime

'Senses Working Overtime' is a single by XTC and released in 1982.
It is at once the apogee of their early-eighties British popularity as well as their last gasp of mainstream success in the UK.

While it hit the number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, the single helped their album 'English Settlement' reach number 5 on the album charts.

The single would also be their last Top 40 entry for a decade.
