Paul Johnson - When Love Comes Calling

Paul Johnson has worked with an extensive range of artists in the late 80's and early 90's.  Johnson began singing  gospel in the 70's in New York.  It wasn't until Johnson's meeting with Junior Giscombe that his singing career started to take shap.

'When Love Comes Calling' was Johnson's first single. Released in early 1987 the single managed to make it to number 52 in the UK Singles Charts.

Alison Moyet - Ordinary Girl

'Ordinary Girl' is vocalist Alison Moyet's second single of 1987 from the album Raindancing.

The single failed to enter the UK top 40, peaking at number 43 for a total of four weeks, the first single of Moyet's to fail the top 40 at the time. Moyet's previous single 'Love Letters' peaked at number 4 in the UK.

A promotional video was created for the single as well as Moyet performing the song on ITV's short lived music show The Roxy and the "French and Saunders Show".

The song was also performed on "Pop goes New Year 1987" aboard the HMS Royal ship. She performed two other songs on the ship, 'Is This Love?' and 'Blow Wind Blow', both from the same album.

'Ordinary Girl' was written by Moyet along with British musician Jess Bailey and Rick Driscoll.

The B-Side for the single 'Palm Of Your Hand (Cloak And Dagger)' was exclusive to the single, written and produced by Dan Hartman.

Errol Brown - Personel Touch

Errol Brown released his first solo single in 1987 entitled 'Personel Touch'

Produced by Jolley and Swain the single managed to make it to number 25 in the UK singles charts.

Like a lot of singles some years ago I didn't keep the b-side so if anyone has this entitled 'Why Don't You Call Me' and the extended version of the title track, please let me know so I can add them to here.

Whitney Houston - So Emotional

Well yesterday I heard that the great singer that is Whitney Houston had been found dead in her hotel room. 

Houston was a great icon of the 80's with an amazing voice that it was tragic how her life was troubled with the abuse of drugs. 

It is a sad day that she has passed on so I felt that today will be my tribute to her and I hope that she is now at peace. 

R.I.P Whitney Houston - you will be sadly missed.

'So Emotional' is a song recorded by American pop/ R and B singer Whitney Houston. The song was the third single from her second album Whitney, and was released on November 12, 1987.

'So Emotional' was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who also penned Madonna's 'Like a Virgin', Cyndi Lauper's 'True Colors', Heart's 'Alone', and The Bangles 'Eternal Flame', all of which reached number 1 on the charts. The song centers on Houston loving being in love, singing "I get so emotional baby / Every time I think of you / I get so emotional / Ain't it shocking what love can do".

At this time Houston already had a string of five consecutive number-one hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. 'So Emotional' went to the number 1 position as well, giving her six consecutive number-one singles; putting her in a three-way tie with The Beatles and The Bee Gees. It became the first number-one of 1988, eventually receiving gold certification. The single remained in the Top 40 for fourteen weeks, and also reached number one on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart.

'So Emotional' was ranked sixth on The Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts (1988).

In the United Kingdom the song was remixed by Shep Pettibone when released as a single and peaked at number 5 in the UK Singles Chart in November 1987, remaining in the chart for 11 weeks.

Elsewhere the single performed moderately well reaching twenty-one in France, twenty-six in Australia and thirty in Switzerland.

The music video for 'So Emotional' (directed by Wayne Isham) features Houston on tour and preparing for the night's concert. Footage is from the concert she performed at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Boy George - Keep Me In Mind

'Keep Me In Mind' was Boy George second solo single release.

Released in 1987 this single was the follow up to the hit single 'Everything I Own'.

Taken from the album Sold the single was not as successful as it's predecessor as it reached number 29 in the UK singles charts.

However the single faired better in the Italian charts as it reached number 3.

Blue Zone - Thinking About His Baby / Big Thing

Before Lisa Stansfield made it big in 1989, first with Cold Cut and then as a solo artist, she first appeared in a band called Blue Zone. The band added UK to the name in the US due to a name dispute.

The band consisted of:

Lisa Stansfield on Lead Vocals
Ian Devany on Trombobe, Keyboard, Guitar and Backing Voculs Andy Morris on Trumpet, Fluglehorn, Electronic Keyboard and Backing Voculs.

'Thinking About His Baby' was released as a singe in 1987. On the B-Side was the track Big Thing.

These were then flipped in 1988 when the single 'Big thing' was given a release as a 12 inch single and promo single. Backed with the previous A-Side the 12 inch also included the Big Dub Club Mix.

'Thinking About His Baby' eventually reached number 79 in the UK singles Chart while 'Big Thing' failed to chart in 1988.

Echo And The Bunnymen - People Are Strange

Well it's Halloween again and I thought that I would share a track that I just loved back in 1987.

British group Echo and the Bunnymen recorded a cover version of 'People Are Strange' for the soundtrack of the 1987 film The Lost Boys.

It was subsequently released as a single in 1987 reaching number 29 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1988 and number 13 on the Irish Singles Chart in 1991.

The song was produced by The Doors' keyboard player, Ray Manzarek.

Boy George - To Be Reborn

Boy George released his Fourth single in 1987 entitled 'To Be Reborn'.

This was the final track to be released from the Sold album.

A ballad this single made it to number 13 on the UK Singles chart making it the 2nd highest chart plaing for George.

This also is one of my most favourite single by Boy Ggeorge.

All About Eve - In The Clouds

All About Eve were a British rock/pop band. The creative core consisted of the Coventry born Julianne Regan (vocals), and the Huddersfield born Andy Cousin (bass guitar), with other members changing over the years.

The band released their second single entitled 'In The Clouds'.

This release did not trouble the charts. It wasnt untill the single was released again in 1987 that it managed to reach number 47 in the Uk Singles Chart.

The single would also appear on the bands first album entitled 'All About Eve'.

Black - Wonderful Life - 1987 Version

Friday I posted the original version of this single by Black.

Now fast forward a couple of years later and the single was re-released, but this time on A&M Records, following the success of the previous single 'Sweetest Smile'.

Included on the Album of the same name the single became a great success reaching number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and became a big hit around Europe and Australia.

The music video was shot in black and white around the English seaside resort of New Brighton, near Black's hometown Liverpool, and features New Brighton Lighthouse and Promenade. It was directed by Gerard De Thame, husband of Rachel De Thame, and won an award at the NY Film Festival in 1988.

Curiosity Killed The Cat - Misfit

Curiosity Killed The Cat first came to the notice of the UK music press when they hooked up with Andy Warhol for the video of the 1986 single 'Misfit'.

This featured the band in New York and at one point featured frontman Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot dancing down a side street whilst Andy Warhol referenced Bob Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' by dropping pieces of white card in time to the music.

The single was initially released in 1986 but failed to chart. Following the bands success in 1986 and 1987 with the singles 'Down To Earth' and 'Ordinary Day', the band re-released 'Misfit' to the public.

This second release proved popular with the single reaching number 7 in the UK Singles Chart.

Now That's Embarrassing: The 80's is another in the long line of Friday night list shows broadcast at 9pm on Channel Five in the UK.

True to its name, Now That's Embarrassing: The 80s features the most embarrassing or 'cheesy' aspects from 1980s culture including the Minipops (at number 12), MC Miker G & DJ Sven, Australian soap operas and the Sinclair C5.

As with other shows of this type - such as Channel 4's rival strand of the 2000s: the 100 Greatest shows - this strand features a rundown of popular clips with a number of vox pops from cultural historians and celebrities from the era in question.

'To Be With You Again' is a single by Mark King and Boon Gould, and released in 1987.

Released from the seventh Level 42's studio album 'Running in the Family' the single made it to number 10 in the UK singles Chart.

Mannequin - Album Soundtrack

Mannequin is a 1987 romantic comedy film, starring Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall, Meshach Taylor, James Spader, G. W. Bailey, and Estelle Getty.

It was written and directed by Michael Gottlieb, and the original music score was composed by Sylvester Levay.

The film is an unacknowledged remake of the 1948 film One Touch of Venus, starring Robert Walker and Ava Gardner.

Mannequin was nominated for one Oscar for the Original Song category for its theme song 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now'. this single reahed number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart.
Despite weak reviews, the film was a commercial success and is today considered a cult film. It was followed by a sequel, Mannequin Two: On the Move, in 1991.

The Communards - Never Can Say Goodbye

'Never Can Say Goodbye' is a song written by Clifton Davis and originally recorded by The Jackson 5.

Released as a single in 1971, it was one of the group's most successful songs. The song has been covered numerous times, most notably in 1974 by disco diva Gloria Gaynor and in 1987 by Hi-NRG/dance-pop group The Communards.

In 1987, British pop band The Communards had a hit with a Hi-NRG cover of the Clifton Davis classic, which was featured on their second album, Red.

Scottish lead singer Jimmy Somerville, openly gay on record since his previous band Bronski Beat released 'Smalltown Boy' in 1984, performed a falsetto version faithful to Gaynor's disco take, right down to the pronouns "you know you love him more and more" and "never can say goodbye, boy".

The Communards' version reached number four in the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot Dance/Disco chart in the U.S. The group had reached number one on those charts covering another 1970s classic, 'Don't Leave Me This Way', in 1986.

The energetic music video of this version is classified as a classic by cable video channel VH1.

The Communards version was also featured in Father's Day, in the first series of the revived Doctor Who, set in 1987.

Level 42 - Children Say

'Children Say' is a song written by Mark King, Mike Lindup and Phil Gould. It was recorded in 1987 for the studio album Running in the Family by the British musical group Level 42.

After a series of successes 'Lessons in Love', 'Running in the Family', 'To be With You Again' and 'It's Over', the band decided to issue 'Children Say' as their last single of 1987.

The song was more successful than expected in the Netherlands as it reached number 9, and it also made the top 30 in United Kingdom by reaching number 22.

The music video of this song was the first of Level 42's career without the presence of the brothers Phil and Boon Gould. They had left the band due to dissatisfaction with the label. The video was recorded in an urban setting. The Boon brothers are also missing from the covers of the single and 12".

Alexander O'Neail - Criticize

'Criticize' is Alexander O'Neal's biggest UK hit to date.

Released in 1987, the single reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

It was also one of his only two hits to chart in the Ireland Singles Chart, reaching number 14.

However, 'Criticize' wasn't so successful in the Billboard Hot 100 chart as it only managed to reach number 70.

Bruce Willis - The Return Of Bruno - Album

The Return of Bruno is the debut album by actor Bruce Willis.

Released by Motown in 1987, this album is an eclectic gathering of R&B music sung by Willis, with backing musicians including Booker T. Jones, Ruth Pointer and The Temptations.

Every song is a cover with the exception of 'Jackpot (Bruno's Bop)', for which Willis receives a co-writing credit with producer Robert Kraft.

The album peaked at number 28 in the UK Album Chart. The album also peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Lead off single 'Respect Yourself' received considerable airplay, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and number 10 on the UK singles Chart. Follow-up singles 'Young Blood' and 'Under the Boardwalk' did not fare nearly as well, peaking at number 68 and number 59, respectively.

However, in the UK 'Under the Boardwalk' was a massive success, reaching number 2 in the charts and becoming the 12th best-selling single of 1987 in the UK.

The album is a companion piece to an HBO special of the same name which aired shortly after the record's release. A re-issue was distributed by Razor & Tie in 1997.

Suzanne Vega - Luka

'Luka" is a song recorded by Suzanne Vega and released as a single in 1987.

In the UK the single reached number 23 in the UK Singles Chart. However, it remains her highest-charting hit in the United States, reaching number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

This song was one of the earliest to deal with child abuse and domestic violence. One critic said, "the 'happy' music is a metaphorical denial, making this seem beautiful and serene while discussing something terrible and devastating. It is a wonderful use of tune as a metaphor for how many abuse victims also deny their abuse, and is a profound classic".

This video was directed by Michael Patterson & Candice Reckinge. It was shot over 3 days, in New York City. The part of Luka was played by actor Jason Cerbone, who was chosen after the directors auditioned more than 90 children for the part.
