Nightmares In Wax - Birth Of A Nation

It was only after rehearsing in 1977 with some friends that Pete Burns realized he really did have a powerful singing voice, and his first band was an outfit he formed with friends Julian Cope, Pete Wylie, and Phil Hurst.

Dubbing themselves The Mystery Girls, they played only one gig (opening for Sham 69 at Eric's in Liverpool in November 1977) before disintegrating.

Burns returned in 1979 with a new band, Nightmares in Wax, featuring a gothic post-punk sound, with backing from Hurst, keyboardist Martin Healy, bassist Walter Ogden, and guitarist Mick Reid.

Nightmares in Wax played their first gig at Eric's in February 1979, and were signed to the associated Eric's Records label, although their only recording, a three-track 7 inch EP entitled 'Birth of a Nation', was released in 1980 by Inevitable Records.

Two 12-inch singles were released featuring tracks from the 'Birth Of A Nation' single.
The first featured the two tracks from the EP, 'Black Leather' and 'Shangri-La', while the second featured all the tracks and was released in 1985).

The EP featured 'Black Leather', which halfway through turned into K.C. & the Sunshine Band's 'That's the Way' (a song later revived by Dead or Alive).

Dead Or Alive - Misty Circles

'Misty Circles' is a song written and recorded by English New Wave/Dance band Dead or Alive. It was co-produced by the band and Zeus B. Held and released as the first single from Dead or Alive's album Sophisticated Boom Boom.

'Misty Circles' was the first song to be released by Dead or Alive after being signed to a major label, Epic Records. The band's prior single releases were issued independently.

Upon its release, 'Misty Circles' was not a success, peaking at number 100 on the UK Singles Chart.

In 1984, the song was placed on the B-side of 'You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)'. As both sides earned significant play in American nightclubs, they charted together as a double-sided hit on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart, peaking at number four.

The band performed it before a live audience on Razzmatazz, which features Pete Burns wearing a wardrobe similar to Boy George's, and thus created some temporary friction between the two singers in later years.

The single became the groups first entry on the UK Singles Chart, as well as their lowest peaking single.

The 'Dance Mix' and the b-side 'Selfish Side' were released on the 2007 remastered CD version of the Dead Or Alive album 'Sophisticated Boom Boom' the 'Dub Mix' has not been released on CD.

Dead Or Alive - Number Eleven

Dead or Alive released their second single entitled 'Number Eleven' in 1981.

Released on the Inevitable Music Label this single, like the first, did not trouble the charts.

Dead Or Alive - I'm Falling

Dead or Alive was founded in Liverpool by Pete Burns, who was encouraged by local music promoters to gather a band together based on his outrageous appearance alone.

In 1980, after several line-up changes since the start of the year, and just before they were to record a radio session for John Peel, Burns changed the name of the band from Nightmare In Wax to the more marketable Dead Or Alive.

'I'm Falling' was the first single released by the band in 1980 on the Inevitable Music label with the b-side 'Flowers'.

The single failed to make a dent on the charts.

This single is very different to the pop dance stuff that made the band famous.

Dead Or alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)

'You spin me 'round (like a record)' was taken from Dead or Alive's 1985 album 'Youthquake'. This song was the first UK number-one hit for the Stock Aitken Waterman production trio. Released in November 1984 it was a slow starter in the UK. It lingered outside the singles top 40 chart for a couple of months before the record reached number one in March 1985, taking seventeen weeks to get there. In the US, it peaked at number 11 in September of that year. The single was also a top 3 hit in Australia and Italy, and peaking at number 6 in the Netherlands.

The original cut was over four minutes long and was edited for the album. The unedited version was released on an '80's CD called Monster '80s Volume Two.

Dead or Alive was formed around singer Peter Burns, who attracted attention with his eccentric image, which was often compared to then-popular Culture Club frontman Boy George. At the time of its release, one of the band members was Wayne Hussey, who would go on to work with the Sisters of Mercy, and then form The Mission.
