Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes

'In Your Eyes' is a song by musician Peter Gabriel from his 1986 album So.

It reached number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks and number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November, 1986.

It was not released as a single in the UK.

Gabriel later released an extended version of the song which was nearly 9 minutes in length (as compared to the original 5:29 version that appears on the album).

In 1989 the single was again released in the US where it made it to number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song was the finale of the Secret World Tour, and is the final track on the 1994 Secret World Live album, where it is over 11 minutes long and includes the extra lyrics from the Special Mix, in addition to solos by the the other singers and players.

It was included on the US version of his 2003 compilation Hit, but not on the European or Japanese versions.

In 2005, after 19 years of accumulated sales, the song brought Gabriel his first Gold single, certified in the U.S. by the RIAA.

The B-Side to this single was Biko. This has been released around the workd previously and also features on my blog so I decieded not to include it in this post as there was no difference in the track.

In 2002 Darren Hayes released his cover of the song on the CD single Version. I have to say that this is one of the better cover versions of the song I have heard as it gave the song something new with more emotion.

Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush - Don't Give Up

'Don't Give Up' is song written by Peter Gabriel and recorded as a duet with Kate Bush for Gabriel's album So.

The single version spent eleven weeks in the UK Top 75 chart in 1986, peaking at number nine.

It describes the despair of a man who feels isolated and defeated by the economic system, and the support and wise counsel sung in the refrain.

There were two videos created for this song by Godley & Creme. The first consisted of a single take of the singers in an embrace, as the sun enters total eclipse and re-emerges. The second featured Gabriel and Bush's faces superimposed over film of a town and its people in disrepair.

Peter Gabriel - Red Rain

'Red Rain' is the first track on Peter Gabriel's 1986 solo album So. In the USA, it reached number 3 on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Stewart Copeland from The Police played the hi-hat for the rain-like background sound; the rest of the drumming was handled by Jerry Marotta.

The song is a combination of several inspirations. The lyrics directly reference a recurring dream Gabriel was having where he swam in his pool drinking cold red wine.

Earlier in his solo career, Gabriel had an idea for a movie, Mozo. In it, villagers were punished for their sins with a blood red rain. "Red Rain" was to be the theme song. This idea was eventually scrapped, although there was a mention of Mozo in the song 'On the Air' in Peter Gabriel (II). Down The Dolce Vita, Here Comes The Flood, Exposure, and Big Blue Ball are also reference the Mozo story, as well.

According to the sleeve notes from the remastered version of So, it is also a reference to acid rain. Based on one interpretation of some of the lyrics it is also thought to refer to nuclear fallout.

Peter Gabriel - Skock The Monkey

'Shock the Monkey' is a 1982 song by Peter Gabriel.

It was released as a single and peaked at number 29 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 1 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart. The song was Gabriel's first Top 40 hit in the US.

In the UK, the song charted at number 58. It was included on Gabriel's fourth self-titled album, issued in the U.S. as Security.

As well as its "relentlessly repeated hook" that "sounded nothing like anything else on the radio at the time", the track is known for its popular and somewhat disturbing music video featuring Gabriel (in white face paint) and a frightened-looking macaque.

Due to its title and the content of the video, the song is frequently assumed to be either an animal rights song or a reference to the famous experiments by Stanley Milgram described in his book Obedience to Authority. It is neither, although another Gabriel song, 'We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37)', from his 1986 album So, does deal directly with Milgram.

Gabriel himself has described 'Shock the Monkey' as "a love song" that examines how jealousy can release one's baser instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings of jealousy.

Peter Gabriel - Games Without Fronties

'Games Without Frontiers' is a hit 1980 single by Peter Gabriel, released on his third self-titled solo album. It features Kate Bush on backing vocals and became his first UK Top 10 hit, peaking at number 4. The song also peaked at number 48 in the U.S. It ties with 1986's Sledgehammer as his highest-charting song in the UK. The B-side to the single was two tracks combined into one: 'Start' and 'I Don't Remember'.

The song's title comes from a European game show, Jeux Sans Frontières, that featured teams competing for prizes while dressed in bizarre costumes. The British version of the show was called It's a Knockout, a phrase that also appears in the song. The teams represented towns and cities from each country, so the games had an inevitable element of nationalism. While some games were simple races, others allowed one team to obstruct another.

The lyrics are seen as a critique of nationalism and war, which the song portrays as essentially childish. The tag line of the song, 'Games without frontiers, war without tears' is a comment on the sublimation of the rivalries within Europe, caused by centuries of war, in a meaningless game.

The name Lin Tai Yu, which appears in the song, belongs to a character from the classic Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber.

Chiang Ching, another name mentioned, refers either to the wife of Chairman Mao and a leader of the Cultural Revolution or to Chiang Ching-kuo, the son of Chiang Kai-shek, who was president of Taiwan at the time the song was written.

Additionally, the end of the first verse refers to Hitler and Enrico Fermi: "Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Brit; Adolf builds a bonfire, Enrico plays with it." Hitler started World War II in Europe, while Fermi's nuclear reactor enabled the nuclear weapons which ended the war in Japan.

The album version of the song includes the line "Whistling tunes we piss on the goons in the jungle" before the second chorus. This was replaced for the single release with a more radio-friendly repeat of the line "Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle" from the first chorus. The whistling is Gabriel along with producers Steve Lillywhite and Hugh Padgham.

There is a misconception that Gabriel actually sings "coons" rather than "goons", but all the official lyric sheets for the song have always printed the word as "goons". It is possible to download the original raw, unmixed vocal tracks from the song from Gabriel's Real World Remixed website, and on listening to these without the distractions of the musical backing, it is clear that he sings "goons".

This song features the PAiA Electronics Programmable Drum Set, widely considered the first programmable drum machine (it is not the Roland CR-78, used by many of Gabriel's former Genesis bandmates on both Genesis and solo albums). It also features the Moog Model 15 small analog modular system for many of the synthesizer sounds.

Peter Gabriel - Biko

'Biko' is a protest song by British rock musician Peter Gabriel. The song was included on Gabriel's third album, Peter Gabriel (1980).

It is about Steve Biko, a noted black South African anti-apartheid activist. Biko had been arrested by the South African police in late August 1977. After being held in custody for several days, he was interrogated in room 619 of the Walmer Street prison in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. Following the interrogation, during which he sustained serious head injuries, Biko was transferred to a prison in Pretoria, where he died shortly afterwards, on September 12, 1977. Gabriel often plays the song at the end of concerts, encouraging the audience to join in the singing, and eventually leaving only the drummer on stage.

'Biko' was first released as a single in 1980, when it reached number 38 on the British charts. A live version, recorded in July 1987 at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, was released later that year, reaching number 49 in the UK. This version was included on the soundtrack of Cry Freedom, a 1987 film about Steve Biko. 'Biko' was also featured prominently in "Evan", the next-to-last episode of the first season of the American television show Miami Vice.

One line of the lyrics reads "Yihla Moja" which in Xhosa means "Come Spirit".

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel III (Melt) - Album

Peter Gabriel is Peter Gabriel's third album. The album contains two of Gabriel's most famous songs, the U.K. Top 10 hit 'Games Without Frontiers' and the political song 'Biko', about the late anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. The album was remastered, along with most of Gabriel's catalog, in 2002.

This album is often referred to as Melt due to its cover photograph by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis. The photo was taken with a Polaroid SX-70 instant camera, and subsequently modified by Thorgerson or Gabriel. (Thorgerson does not recall whether he or Gabriel manipulated the image.)

The album was Gabriel's first and only release for Mercury Records in the U.S., after being rejected by Atlantic Records, who handled U.S. distribution for Gabriel's first two solo albums and his last two albums with Genesis. Upon hearing mixes of the album's session tapes in early 1980, Atlantic A&R executive John Kalodner deemed the album not commercial enough for release, and recommended that Atlantic drop Gabriel from their artist roster. By the time the album was released by Mercury several months later, Kalodner, now working for the newly-formed Geffen Records label and having realized his mistake, arranged for Geffen to pursue Gabriel as one of their first artist signings. Geffen re-issued the album in 1983 after Mercury's distribution rights to the album lapsed, and has marketed it in the U.S. since.

Gabriel's ex-Genesis bandmate Phil Collins, who succeeded Gabriel as Genesis' lead vocalist, plays drums and provides backing vocals on several of the album's tracks. In particular, Collins played drums on 'Intruder', which has been cited as the first use of Collins' "gated drum" sound. This effect, as created by Collins and Hugh Padgham, was featured on Collins' recordings throughout the 1980s. The distinctive sound was identified via experiments by Collins and Padgham, in reponse to Gabriel's request that Collins and Jerry Marotta not use cymbals on the album's sessions. The drum sound on this album has been noted by Public Image Ltd as influencing the sound on their album Flowers of Romance, whose engineer, Nick Launay, was in turn employed by Collins to assist him with his first solo album, Face Value.
