Icehouse - Hey Little Girl

Icehouse are an Australian rock band, formed as Flowers in 1977 in Sydney. Initially known in Australia for their pub rock style, they later achieved mainstream success playing new wave and synthpop style music and attained Top Ten singles chart success in both Europe and the U.S.

'Hey Little Girl' is a single released, by the band, the second single from the band's 1982 album, Primitive Man. the single reached number 17 in the UK singles Chart but did much better in other countries such as number 5 in Germany and number 7 in Australia.

The single was issued again, in Germany in 1997, with aditional mixes.

Dalis Car - The Waking Hour - Album

Dalis Car was a musical group formed in 1984 by Peter Murphy - vocalist, Mick Karn -bassist, keyboardist, guitarist, saxophonist and Paul Vincent Lawford - rhythm construction.

The band was formed shortly after Murphy and Karn left their former bands - Bauhaus and Japan, respectively. They recorded one album, 'The Waking Hour', and released one single, 'The Judgement is the Mirror'. The cover of the album features a detail from Maxfield Parrish's seminal painting Daybreak.

The recording of the album took place in unusual circumstances, as neither Karn nor Murphy spent much time together in the recording studio, preferring to send tapes back and forth between each another, to work on alone.

The album, a collection of keyboard and bass-driven songs, was a commercial failure as the album made 84 on the UK Album Chart, and the duo soon disbanded.

Midge Ure and Mick Karn - After A Fashion

'After A Fashion' was a one-off single released by Ultravox lead singer Midge Ure and Mick Karn bassist for the art rock band Japan, from 1974 to 1982.

The song peaked at number 39 on the UK singles chart in 1983.

The cover for the single was taken by Linda McCartney.

I have included the video that was taken from the Timmy Mallet Saturday program as this is the only version that has surfaced on You Tube (to my knowledge). The quality is not great. Mick Karn - Sensitive

'Sensitive' was the only single released from Mick Karn's first solo album entitled 'Titles'. The single features an ex Japan member - Steve Jansen - on percussion. This marked the first in many colloberations between the two over the following years.

The single, like the album it came from, did not do very well on the charts, only making number 98 in the UK singles Charts.

Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street

'Baker Street' is a ballad written and first recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty.

Released as a single in 1978, it reached number 3 in the UK Singles Chart and number 2 in the USA, number 1 in Australia and number 9 in the Netherlands.

The arrangement is famous for its saxophone solo, played by Raphael Ravenscroft.

In October 2010 the song was recognised by the BMI for surpassing 5 million performances worldwide.

Named after the famous London street of the same name, the song was included on Rafferty's second solo album, City to City, which was Rafferty's first release after the resolution of legal problems surrounding the formal breakup of his old band, Stealers Wheel in 1975.

In the intervening three years, Rafferty had been unable to release any material due to disputes about the band's remaining contractual recording obligations. In addition to a guitar solo, played by Hugh Burns, the song features a prominent eight-bar saxophone riff played as a break between verses, by Raphael Ravenscroft.

The solo had been intended for guitar. Ravenscroft was in the studio to record a brief soprano saxophone part and, when he heard that the guitarist would not be available to play the solo, suggested that he record it using the alto saxophone he had in his car. The solo led to what became known as "the 'Baker Street' phenomenon".

I know that this song is from the 70's but it is one of those songs that you just love. The saxophone solo is fantastic. I have always loved this song since first hearing it back in 1978. I also wanted to include the song here as, like Mick Karn, Gerry Rafferty also died on the 4th January 2011. Gerry had been ill with liver failure due to his heavy drinking and this is what finally killed him. So here is the beautiful song for all to enjoy

Mick Karn - Titles - Album

Antony Michaelides (24 July 1958 – 4 January 2011), better known as Mick Karn, was born into a Greek Cypriot family, in Nicosia, Cyprus. In late October, of 1961, the family emigrated to London, England, when Andonis was three years old.

Mick Karn helped form the the band Japan, whose other members included David Sylvian, keyboardist Richard Barbieri and Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen as drummer. The band began as a group of friends, who all studied at the same school. As youngsters they played music as a means of escape, playing Sylvian's two-chord numbers – sometimes with Karn as the front man, sometimes with Sylvian at the fore, guitarist Rob Dean joined the band later.

Following Japan's split in 1982 Karn persued various solo projects. One of those projects included his first solo album entitled 'Titles', released in 1982.

Karn recorded the album in London, during July and August 1982. The album made number 74 in the UK Album charts.

The only single released entitled 'Sensitive' is a reworking of the Roberto Carlos song La Distancia

In June 2010, Mick Karn announced on his website that he had been diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer. After a long battle Mick Karn died at home at 4.30pm on 4th January 2011.

Mick was a great musician, producing music that was both interesting and thought provoking. I had continued to follow Mick's music, as well as other members of Japan, and have to say that it came as a shoke that he had passed away. Mick Karn will be sadly missed and my thoughts go to his family, friends and many fans out there that loved his music and will continue to do so for many more years to come. RIP.

Smash Hits Magazine - 25th December 1980 to 7th January 1981

Smash Hits was a pop music based magazine, aimed at teenagers and young adults and originally published in the United Kingdom by EMAP. It ran from 1978 to 2006 and was issued fortnightly for most of that time.

Smash Hits was founded in 1978 by Nick Logan, who had previously edited the New Musical Express during one of its most creative periods and went on to create '80s fashion bible The Face.

After releasing a test issue in September 1978, with Plastic Bertrand on the front and a centre spread of Sham 69, the first issue was published in November 1978 and featured Blondie on the cover. The publication was initially monthly but switched to fortnightly after only three issues, which it remained until its demise. The backbone of the magazine in its early years, and one of its major early selling points, was the publication of Top 20 song lyrics.

Always loved Smash Hits along with another magazine called Number 1 I always bought thse on the day of release. As I got older I also bought NME but never gave up reading Smash Hits. I Managed to find some of the magazines from 83 and 84 which I will put up here in the coming months. But for now I wanted to let people know of a great blog that is dedicated to Smash Hits. Imagination - Just An Illusion

'Just an illusion' was written by Leee John and Ashley Ingram from the band Imagination, together with their producers Steve Jolley and Tony Swain.

The smooth soul sound of the track appealed to a lot of listeners making it the bands biggest hit, peaking at number 2 in the UK Singes chart, when it was released in March 1982.

Pop Quiz

Pop Quiz was a British television quiz programme that originally aired on BBC1 from 4 July 1981 to 28 December 1984 with a Top of the Pops special from 4 January 1994 hosted by Mike Read.

It was then revived from 21 May to 9 July 1994 on the same channel but this time hosted by Chris Tarrant. It was revived again on Red TV from 14 June 2008 to 30 August 2008 with Mike Read returning as host.

We recently watched an episode from Christmas 1983 which brought back memories of the program that I remember watching as a kid like many others out there. I decided to see what was available on You Tube and found the first epiosde, which will be 30 years old. Don't remember if I watched this episode but decided to share this with everyone out there. Soft Cell - Say Hello Wave Goodbye

Soft Cell released 'Say hello wave goodbye' as their fifth single in early 1982. It was the last track on their 1981 album 'Non-stop erotic cabaret'. The song's title is a reference to The Beatles' song 'Hello, Goodbye'.

The 12" single included a nine minute version with an extended clarinet solo and instrumental parts.

The single version basically cuts the extended version of the 12" single into two parts, in which the first part becomes the instrumental version on the B-side, the second part is the single version on the A-side.

Soft Cell reached third place in the UK singles chart with this, one of their most acclaimed tracks in their career. It was covered by English singer David Gray in 1999.

Five Star - Rain Or Shine

'Rain or Shine' is the name of a 1986 hit single by British pop group Five Star.

The single became their biggest-selling 7-inch record with over 250,000 sales recorded.

Peaking at number 2 on the UK chart, it was held off the top spot for three weeks by British pop band The Communards with the year's biggest selling song, 'Don't Leave Me This Way'.

'Rain Or Shine' spent a total of 13 weeks inside the UK Top 75, five of those in the Top 10.

'Music and Lights' was the 5th single released by Imagination in 1982 and provided yet another great example of the bands brand of music that was becoming ever popular.

This single was taken from the bands 2nd album 'In The Heat Of The Night' and followed the ever popular single 'Just An Illusion'.

The single made it to number 5 in the UK Singles Chart, becoming their 3rd most biggest hit while the single made it to number 52 on the US R and B Chart.

Toyah - I Believe In Father Christmas

'I Believe In Father Christmas' is a song by Greg Lake (most famously a member of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer), with lyrics by Peter Sinfield. Although it is often categorised as a Christmas song this was not Lake's intention.

Toyah covered the song on a performance broadcast on 26th December 1982 on the ITV programme Pop Goes Christmas.

Renee and Renato - Save Your Love

If there’s one thing the 1980s had that seems to have been lost in more recent times it is the really cheesey song. They don’t come much cheesier than Save Your Love, the 1982 Christmas UK number one hit from classy duo Renee and Renato.

As mentioned Save Your Love hit the top of the charts at Christmas, but it was actually released back in October of 1982 entering the charts at a less than auspicious 54 in the charts. Somehow the song got discovered however and it rose up the charts both in the UK and The Netherlands and Norway, staying at the top of the British charts for no less than four weeks.

Renée (real name Hilary Lester) and Renato (full name Renato Pagliari) did release two other songs, Just One More Kiss and Jesus Loves Us All, but neither repeated their initial success and so Renée (sorry, Hilary) went back to her private life whilst Renato died in July this year.

The song was written by creator and voice of 1980’s TV robot Metal Mickey, Johnny Edward, with his wife Sue. Perhaps the song would have been funnier still had Renato been replaced by Mickey… Perhaps more surprising is that the song has even been covered several times, including most recently by Daniel O’Donnell and Mary Duff.

Shakin Stevens - The Shakin Stevens EP

In 1982 Shakin Stevens released a single in time for the christmas market.

The single was entitled 'The Shakin Stevens EP' was a 4 track disc of live songs.

'Blue Christmas' was the lead track with the remining tracks being called 'Que Sera, Sera', 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' and 'Josephine'.

Released in December 1982 the single made it to number 2 in the christmas and new year UK Single charts.

It spent a total of 8 weeks in the singles chart.

Synth Britannia - BBC4 Documentary

Synth Britannia is BBC4 documentary following a generation of post-punk musicians who took the synthesiser from the experimental fringes to the centre of the pop stage.

In the late 1970s, small pockets of electronic artists including the Human League, Daniel Miller and Cabaret Volatire were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard and dreamt of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain.

The crossover moment came in 1979 when Gary Numan's appearance on Top of the Pops with Tubeway Army's Are Friends Electric heralded the arrival of synthpop. Four lads from Basildon known as Depeche Mode would come to own the new sound whilst post-punk bands like Ultravox, Soft Cell, OMD and Yazoo took the synth out of the pages of the NME and onto the front page of Smash Hits.

By 1983, acts like Pet Shop Boys and New Order were showing that the future of electronic music would lie in dance music.

Contributors include Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant.

The Pretenders - Get Close - Album

Get Close is the fourth album by rock group The Pretenders, released in 1986.

Officially, the band for this album now consisted of Chrissie Hynde (vocals, guitar), Robbie McIntosh (guitar), T.M. Stevens (bass) and Blair Cunningham (drums); however, this line-up (often augmented by session players) played on only five of the album's eleven tracks.

As well, the track 'Room Full Of Mirrors' was in fact performed by the Learning to Crawl-era line up of Hynde, Mcintosh, Malcolm Foster and Martin Chambers, with keyboards by Rupert Black. The rest of the album was performed by Hynde and McIntosh, backed by session musicians.

The album contained the band's two biggest chart hits, 'Don't Get Me Wrong' and 'Hymn To Her'.

The album reached number 6 in the UK Album Charts.

Soft Cell - Bedsitter

The follow-up to a massive hit can go several ways, but the main possibilities include: 1) an almost exact simulation, a lucky strike turned into a formula or 2) the hit is used as a springboard to go deeper and weirder, with the added confidence caused by unexpected success.

'Bedsitter' came off the back of 'Tainted Love', Soft Cell's 1981 bestselling single. Their cover of Gloria Jones's northern soul classic (which segued, on the 12-inch, into the Supremes' Where Did Our Love Go) was a minimalist anthem that both betrayed the duo's north-western origins and made the most of their performance art leanings.

'Bedsitter' is cut from the same cloth as 'Tainted Love': sparse production, highlighting the simple, repetitive synth lines, the expressive vocal and the almost burlesque uh-uh hook cueing the verse. Ball understood structure and dance appeal, while Almond got the grunge beneath the glitz, the desperation behind the shiny facade of London's newly swinging club land.

Released in November 1981, Bedsitter peaked at No 4 that Christmas; the No 1 was the Human League with their breakthrough hit, 'Don't You Want Me'. The single version was included on Soft Cell's classic first album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, which continued the group's tender/wicked duality, especially in the segue between Youth and Sex Dwarf.

Depeche Mode - Music For The Masses - Album

'Music for the Masses' is the sixth studio album by Depeche Mode. Released by Mute Records on September 28, 1987, it provided the band with mainstream success in the United States for the first time since Some Great Reward. It was supported by the Music for the Masses Tour, which compiles material into the band's first live album 101.

The album became the band's highest-charting in the US upon its release, reaching number 35 on the Billboard 200. It also contained more hit singles than any of their previous releases. While there was no extremely popular single from the album - 'People Are People' from Some Great Reward reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100), the three singles that were released all made it onto the Hot 100, a feat that hadn't been achieved by any Depeche Mode single after those from Some Great Reward. Moreover, all three singles achieved modest success on the chart.

The first single from the album, 'Strangelove', only reached number 76 and spent 6 weeks on the chart upon its initial release. 'Never Let Me Down Again' was then issued and hit number 63, spending 10 weeks on the chart. Its success was duplicated by 'Behind the Wheel' which had a similar chart run. This propelled a re-released 'Strangelove' (as "Strangelove '88") to number 50, making it the highest-charting single from the album.

The story was similar in the United Kingdom. While no single reached the chart heights of Depeche Mode's early career, 'Strangelove' narrowly became the band's second-highest charting single since 1984 when it hit number 16. The two follow-up singles charted in the upper 20s. The album was less successful, reaching only number 10, though it was a major success throughout Europe. Generally, this album and its extracted singles continued the trend for Depeche Mode's releases to chart higher in Continental Europe than in their home country: 'Strangelove' and 'Never Let Me Down Again' both hit number 2 on the singles chart in what was then West Germany, 'Behind The Wheel' hit number 6 there, and 'Little 15' reached number 16.

The Music for the Masses Tour was one of Depeche Mode's biggest, notably because of the sell-out Pasadena Rose Bowl show where the band performed to around 65,000 fans, cementing their place in United States alternative culture. This made the band question if they had reached the peak of their careers, according to the 101 DVD, a documentary on the concert, but put that notion to rest with Violator, which was even more successful.

The Pretenders - Don't Get Me Wrong

'Don't Get Me Wrong' is a song released by the pop-rock group The Pretenders. It was the first single taken from the group's 1986 album, Get Close. It can also be found on the band's The Singles album, released in 1987.

In the US, 'Don't Get Me Wrong' became the group's second Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 10.



Their first Top 10 pop hit, 'Back on the Chain Gang', had reached number 5 in 1983. 'Don't Get Me Wrong' also spent three weeks atop the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart in November 1986.



In the UK, the song also peaked at number 10 in the UK Singles Chart.

This song was more commercial than the band's usual sound, with a jangly guitar sound and a pop melody. However, the lyrics were still as biting as their earlier material. It was covered by British pop singer Lily Allen for BBC Radio 1's 30th anniversary celebrations in 2007 and was released on the subsequent compilation album.

A Flock Of Seagulls - Listen - Album

'Listen' was the second album released by the UK synthpop band A Flock of Seagulls and was released in 1983.

The album teamed the musical group with record producer Mike Howlett again, except on the single release '(It's Not Me) Talking' which was produced by Bill Nelson.

The record included the UK Top 10 hit 'Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)'. The shape of a person's face on its sleeve cover is in fact the band's drummer, Ali Score.

Double - Blue - Album

Double formed in 1983 in Zurich, Switzerland by Felix Haug (drums and keyboards) and Kurt Maloo (guitar and vocals) out of the trio Ping Pong of which both Maloo and Haug were members.

The high point of Double's career came shortly after the late 1985 release of their first full length album, Blue.

The album contained two of the band's earlier singles as well as the international smash hit, 'The Captain of Her Heart,' a plaintive, atmospheric, piano-led ballad which was an immediate success throughout Europe upon its 1986 single release
