Sylvester - Someone Like You

A true superstar, Sylvester represented the black and gay cultural origins of disco and made it possible for RuPaul's success. His body of work includes crucial contributions to the disco songbook, but his ballads proved he was a versatile stylist who brought a realness and depth to all material. Oddly enough, after years of paying dues with small record companies, Sylvester found himself on Warner Brothers for his album 'Mutual Attraction'. The single 'Someone Like You', released in 1986, had a Larry Levan mix, but Sylvester was unable to take full advantage of his new resources as he was diagnosed with AIDS. He stopped performing, but stayed in the spotlight to raise awareness about the disease. He died in 1988, only 40 but with a legacy that will forever endure.

Five Star - Problematic

'Problematic' is the name of Five Star's very first single, released in October 1983.

The song was performed on BBC TV's 'Pebble Mill At One' show, which brought the band to public attention. According to Five Star's father/manager, Buster Pearson, RCA records were on the phone offering the band a record contract before the end of their performance.

Five Star were asked to perform 'Problematic' on the show as that particular edition was focussing on unemployment, trying to find work, and the problems that come with it. The song was simply about a young girl leaving school, trying to find work. The singles B-Side was called 'Big Funk'. The single failed to chart in the UK.

Five Star - Luxury Of Life

'Luxury Of Life' is the debut album by the pop group Five Star. The album eventually peaked at number 12 in the UK Album Charts, thanks to the introduction of the CD format, where it eventually achieved Platinum status in late 1986. The album paired Five Star with fellow musicians Paul Hardcastle, The Limit and Loose Ends. Five Star worked with nine different producers for the album. The album produced four UK top 30 hit singles including the top 3 hit 'System Addict', number 15 hit 'All Fall Down', number 18 hit 'Let Me Be The One' and number 25 hit 'Love Take Over'. There were 3 other singles released from the album that did not make the top 40 in the UK. These were 'Hide and Seek' reaching number 113, 'R.S.V.P.' reaching number 45 and 'Crazy' reaching 144 in the UK Singles chart.

Marths and the Muffins - Metro Music

‘Metro Music’ was recorded at the Manor Studio, England, in August 1979 and is the debut album by the canadian group Martha and the Muffins and originally released in 1979. ‘Metro Music’ is notable as being the first album ever to be released on the new DinDisc label (DID 1), which was a subsidery of the Virgin Label. The debut album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (DID 2). ‘Metro Music’produced the bands only international hit with ‘Echo Beach’ which reached number 10 in the UK Charts in march 1980. ‘Saigon’ was released as a follow-up single in the Uk but it failed to chart, while ‘Paint By Number Heart’ was released in Canada reaching number 69 in their Singles Chart. The album serves as an example of a distinct era and sound called ‘New Wave’.

Breathe - All That Jazz - Album

‘All That Jazz’ is the title of the debut album by Breathe and was actually released in Britain during late 1987, with the original cover left and minus the single 'Don't Tell Me Lies', via A&M Records, but for a time proved so much of a sleeper. The album was strictly speaking angled more toward the R&B side of pop music. Comparisons were drawn between Breathe and fellow Brit-pop acts Johnny Hates Jazz and Danny Wilson. It’s true to say that the British pop scene was in pretty decent shape during the second half of the 80s, with a plethora of quality acts jostling for commercial and critical attention. There wasn’t anything earth shattering to set Breathe apart from the rest of the pack, but the lengthy amount of time they spent in working on songs for ‘All That Jazz’ paid off in terms of a consistency of quality not always evident on their contemporaries work.

The album was re-released in 1988 with the new cover, see left and including the single 'Don't tell me lies'. The song to finally open the floodgates for Breathe was the sublime love ballad ‘Hands To Heaven’. David Glasper’s warm vocal style and slick production qualities helped to produce a finished product that ascended all the way to number 4 on the UK Singles charts in 1988. Regrettably Bassist Michael Delahunty, one of the original quartet who had recorded ‘All That Jazz’ between 1985 and 1987, had already left the band before the album finally took off. The album made it to number 22 in the UK Album charts.

Five Star - The Slightest Touch

"The Slightest Touch" released in 1987 by British pop group Five Star, and became the group's third biggest-selling 7-inch record, selling over 175,000 copies. It reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart and spent nine weeks on the chart. The single was remixed by Shep Pettibone. Just before the release of this track, Five Star won "Best British Group" at The Brit Awards ceremony, which in no doubt spurred "The Slightest Touch" onto a high chart position in the UK. The single became the group's last Top 10 hit and was the sixth single released in the UK from their number one LP Silk and Steel, released in August 1986.

Visage - Mind Of A Toy

Visage was formed in 1979 by Steve Strange, Rusty Egan, Midge Ure and later Billy Currie and was quickly linked to the burgeoning New Romantic movement of the early 1980’s. In March 1981 Visage released their fourth single ‘Mind of a Toy’. It was backed by ‘We Move’. The A-side was a remixed version of a song that first appeared on their self titled debut album. The B-side ‘We Move’ was a non album track. The single reached number 13 in the UK charts.

Visage - The Damned don't Cry

Following their earlier success, Strange struggled to reunite the band's members again to record a second album because of their commitments with their respective bands (Ure and Currie with Ultravox, Formula with Magazine, and McGeoch with Siouxsie and the Banshees). However, in the autumn of 1981 all musicians (except McGeoch) went into the studio again and recorded the album ‘The Anvil’. The album was released in March 1982 and became Visage's first (and only) UK top ten album, producing two top twenty singles with "The Damned Don't Cry" and "Night Train". The Damned Don’t Cry made it to number 11 in the UK charts continuing the earlier success of the band.

Spandau Ballet - Paint Me Down

Spandau Ballet were formed in London in the late 70’s. Initially inspired by the New Romantic fashion, their music featured a mixture of Funk, Jazz, Soul and Synthpop. They were one of the most successful bands of the 1980’s, achieving ten Top Ten singles and four Top Ten albums in the UK between 1979 and 1990.

In 1982 they released their second album ‘Diamond’ which reached number 15 in the Uk charts. Towards the end of 1981 Spandau released their second single from the album which was called "Paint Me Down". The biggest attention the single got was from the picture (see opposite) that accompanied it and the video. The fans definitely gave it the thumbs up, but the BBC censors did not approve banning it from being played on their networks.

The banning of their video on the BBC gave the Spandau Ballet boys some infamy initially, but the poor record sales did not make the record company very happy. Paint Me Down ended Spandau Ballet's run of Top Twenty hits stalling at number 30. They would soon introduce the band to Trevor Horn for a different direction.

Dollop - Sing A Soppy Song (Three Of A Kind)

The sitcom ‘Three of a Kind’ did a spoof of the song by Dollar called ‘Sing a Soppy Song’ performed by David Copperfield and Tracy Ullman as Dollop in the 2nd series in 1982. I loved this version when I saw it on its original broadcast and managed to see it again on the DVD release.

Dollar - Give Me Back My Heart

The 3rd single to be released from the 3rd album ‘The Dollar Album’ was called ‘Give me back my heart’ and was released in March 1982. The single made it to number 4 in the UK Charts. Like the other singles from the album the single was produced by Trevor Horn whose production work provided Dollar with a more distinctive sound. However, the success that Horn had with the band brought him to the attention of other bands, notably ABC, and it was not long before he was too busy to continue working with the duo.

David Sylvian - Silver Moon

Silver Moon was the 6th Single to be released by David Sylvian and the 2nd released from the ‘Gone to Earth’ Album. The single was released in September 1986 and made it to Number 83 in the Uk charts. The main reason for the poor chart placing was that the single was released with the lack of any unique B-Side tracks, as the B-side was taken straight from the ‘Gone to Earth’ Album. This meant that a lot of fans did not bother to get the single when it was released. Coupled this with poor air play meant the single did badly in the charts.


As with other later releases Sylvian used the bautiful artwork by Russell Mills, which is very evident on the Limited Edition Foldout Sleeve release. I love this single by Sylvian because of his warm, emotional and pleasant voice and, for me, the uplifting style of music make it an enjoyable song.


Sylvian 2nd Album ‘Gone to Earth’ was an ambitious two-record set which further flouted conventional and commercial wisdom by featuring one record of atmospheric vocal tracks and a second record consisting of ambient instrumentals. The album contained significant contributions from noted guitarists Bill Nelson.

David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours

In 1983 Sylvian and Sakamoto teamed up again on the ‘Forbidden Colours’ single, which was the theme song to the Nagisa Osima film ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’. Sakamoto composed the theme music while sylvian wrote the lyrics.

The title of the song and its lyrics reflect the main themes of the movie; the clashes between not only two countries at war but also two vastly different cultures, difficulties on both sides in accepting or even trying to understand the differences in mentality, the contrasting definitions of honour and shame, as well as the underlying homoerotic tension between the two main characters, Japanese Captain Yonoi (played by Sakamoto himself) and British war prisoner Jack Celliers (David Bowie), and the fine line between love and hate and consequently life and death - hence my love wears forbidden colours.

In 1984 the track was re-recorded and released as the B-side to "Red Guitar", the lead single to Sylvian's first solo album Brilliant Trees and was later also included as a bonus track on certain editions of his 1987 album Secrets of the Behive. Both Sakamoto and Sylvian have since recorded several interpretations of the song, both instrumental (under the title "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence") and vocal. An orchestral version featuring vocals by Sylvian was included on Sakamoto's 1999 album Cinemage.

David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto - Bamboo House / Bamboo Music

David Sylvian first gained attention as the lead vocalist and main songwriter in the group Japan. In 1982, Sylvian released his first collaborative effort (while still a member of Japan) with Ryuichi Sakamoto. The double A-Side single entitled ‘ Bamboo Houses / Bamboo Music’. The ‘Bamboo Houses’ single in turn features drums by Japan Member and Sylvians brother Steve Jansen, who also appeared in the promo video. A remix of ‘Bamboo Houses’ was included on David Sylvian’s career retrospective ‘Everything and Nothing’ Album release in 2000.

The Lotus Eaters - First Picture Of You

The Lotus Eaters, orignally from Liverpool and formed in 1982, were mistakenly included in the New Romantic movement when they first appearedas they had the elegant attire and fashionable haircuts of New Romantic bands. However, their music was more understated and folksy than the synthesized Euro disco of Japan, Visage, and Duran Duran.

In 1983, the Lotus Eaters released their first single, "The First Picture of You," which reached number 15 in the UK charts. "The First Picture of You" would define the group's sound: Coyle's breathy croon expressing romantic yearning while Kelly plays jangly riffs on his guitar.

The Lotus Eaters' 1984 debut album, No Sense of Sin, was awash in '60s influences, namely the melancholic pop of the Zombies and the Left Banke. The LP was largely left on record-store shelves in the U.K., but a significant cult following in the Philippines and Japan eventually transformed the album into a collector's item, fetching high prices on the Internet. Three more single releases followed, ‘You Don’t Need Someone New’ (No. 53), ‘Set Me Apart’ (No 88), and ‘Out on Your Own before their last single ‘It Hurts’ (No. 87) was released in 1985. Following the bands split Coyle recorded a few solo albums, while Kelly rejoined the Wild Swans. In 1998, The First Picture of You, a compilation of the Lotus Eaters' BBC radio sessions, was released, and the No Sense of Sin album was reissued on CD with bonus tracks.

Feargal Sharkey - Listen to Your Father

Less than a year after releasing the ‘Never Never’ single with The Assembly, Feargal Sharkey released the single ‘Listen to Your Father’. The single was the first to be released on the Madness own record label after Madness had left Stiff Records to set up their own label. The song peaked at number 23 in the UK charts.

In some circles this single was basically a Madness single in all but the vocal as it was written by Madness Carl Smyth (AKA Chas Smith) and Madness play all the music. Like other Smyth songs such as Michael Caine, there's no clear meaning but somehow the words fit the music brilliantly; impressionism rather than literalism. A year later, autumn 1985, Feargal Sharkey was back with his eponymous debut album and its flagship single, the Maria McKee-penned A Good Heart.

Feargal Sharkey - Out of my System

Released in 1988 ‘Wish’ was the second solo album released by Feargal Sharkey, three years after his successful debut self titled album. The album was found to be somewhat disappointing by the general public and therefore was not as successful as its predecessor. The second single from the album was called ‘Out of my System’. This single release is not always mentioned in Feargal's Discography. However it did receive a UK and European release by Virgin records.

There was a 7 inch (VS1051), 12 inch and a 4 track CD single released which featured the following:

The Assembly - Never Never

Sean Feargal Sharkey was born on 13 August 1958 in Londonderry (Northern Ireland) He found fame as the lead singer of the Undertones who was discovered by John Peel and became famous for their hit single ‘Teenage Kicks’, provided some of the best punk-pop of the late 70's. The band eventually fell apart in 1983, after which Sharkey teamed up with Vince Clarke of Yazoo in a one-off project called "The Assembly".

The plaintive "Never Never" single that came out of it was a massive hit which enabled Feargal Sharkey to show the power of his distinctive vocal style reaching number 4 on the UK charts. In 1984 he recorded the underrated "Listen to Your Father", followed in 1985 by his biggest success, "A Good Heart". This insistent tune established him as a potential major act, soon followed by "You Little Thief" and Sharkey's debut album, eventually produced by Eurythmics composer David A. Stewart.

Three years after his successful debut album Sharkey’s released his 2nd album in 1988 called ‘Wish’ The album was found to be somewhat disappointing by the general public so was not as successful as it’s predecessor. ‘More Love’ was the only single to be released in the UK reaching number 46 in the UK charts. However ‘Out of my System’ was released in Germany as a 12 inch single in 1988.

The Associates - Sulk Album

In 1982 the Associates released their critical aclaimed album Sulk. Sulk is by far The Associates best album. It shows the band molding itself from a post-punk band into a band that fuses post-punk influences and synth-pop influences into something beautiful. The album features some extremely upbeat songs, and also some extremely gloomy songs. However, this album is difficult to define and pigenhole but still holds up well today. The Associates - Party Fears Two

The Associates were a know as a Scottish Post Punk and New Wave band of the early 1980s. They were well known for the operatic voice and theatrical antics of the bands singer Billy Mackenzine. MacKenzie and guitarist Alan Rankine met in Dundee in 1976 and formed the cabaret duo The Ascorbic Ones. By the end of 1979 they had changed their name to The Associates.

The band had a couple of early single releases that genarated interest especially their debut single, a cover of David Bowies ‘Boys Keep Swinging’ which was released before Bowies version. The band's breakthrough came in 1982 with the release of the single "Party Fears Two." An unusual song but one that benefited greatly with the high singing style used. The single release was buoyed along by the popularity of synthpop at the time, helping the song make it to number 9 on the UK singles chart. Two other hits soon followed, "18 Carat Love Affair", and "Club Country". That year the band released what is widely regarded as their masterpiece album Sulk, an album which exacted comparisons with Brian Wilsons’s production style. To this day Sulk is impossible to describe genre wise. It was largely conceived in an amphetamine induced frenzy, reflected in its watery and dense production style which is held to be remarkably different from almost any other record from the era. Billy Mackenzine had been suffering clinical depresion for years but shortly before his reputed comback he committed suicide in 1997 aged 39 following the death of his mother.

I dont think there was a video made for the Party Fears Two single. The one that mostly gets played is the performance that the band did on B A Robertson chat show which I think was from the states. I had this but can not find it again. Instead you can see a live performance of the song from Dutch TV.

Soft Cell - Tainted Love

Showing impatience in the wake of the chart failure of "Memorabilia", Phonogram Records allowed Soft Cell to record a second and final single in an attempt to score a chart hit. In July 1981 they release their third single, ‘Tainted Love’ which was backed by "Where Did Our Love Go?". This was an obscure 1964 northern soul track originally sung by Gloria Jones (the girlfriend of Marc Bolan) and written by Ed Cobb of The Four Preps.

The A-side of the 12 inch single of "Tainted Love" actually featured a two-song medley, with "Tainted Love" blending into the Motown classic "Where Did Our Love Go" by The supremes. There was also a version that had "Memorabilia" as the B side (which had been the A side of their second single). The A side appeared on their debut album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. The two B sides did not but were added as bonus tracks when the album was re-released on CD.

"Tainted Love" was a number-one hit in seventeen countries, including the United Kingdom, as well as a number-eight single in the United States during 1982, and went on to set a then- Guinness World Record for the longest consecutive stay on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart (43 weeks). Usually, an artist releasing a cover version as a single would opt to write the song that appears on the B-side as this would still entitle the artist to some songwriting royalties stemming from sales of that single. However, as Soft Cell wrote neither "Tainted Love" nor "Where Did Our Love Go" (the 7" B-side track), they lost the opportunity to make a greater sum of money from songwriting royalties stemming from one of the most popular songs of the '80s. Almond expressed regret for this in his book, and chalked the error up to naïveté (1).
