The Anti-Heroin Project - Live In World

'Live in World' was released as a single in 1986 by The Anti-Heroin Project which consisted of Fish, Nik Kershaw, Cliff Richard, Dave Stewart, Holly Johnson, Robin Gibb, Kim Wilde and many others who all contributed their voices and music to the project.

The Eighties saw an explosion of charity records following on from the lead of Band Aid and Live Aid.

'Live in World' was taken from the double album released under the project name that contained various artists that contributed their work in support of the benefit The Phoenix House Charity which was a drug rehabilitation centre. The single was the track that contained vocals from over fifty artists, that took place on the 7th September, on a new song written by Charley Foskett. The Anti-Heroin Project was not very successful: neither the single nor the album charted.

I have to say that I did not ge the album when it was released. This was strange as it contains artists that I was heavilly collecting at the time so I'm not sure why this passed me by. If any one has the album to share then I would be greatul.

The Anti-Heroin Project - Live in World - Video

Olivia Newton John - Physical

'Physical' is a 1981 song written by Steve Kipner and Terry Shaddick and performed by Olivia Newton-John.

Recorded in early 1981, it made it to number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. However it was more of a success in the US where it first rose to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1981 and stayed there for 10 weeks, until near the end of January 1982. In terms of chart placement, it was the most popular single of her career, as well as her final number-one (to date). The US Billboard ranked it as the number one pop single of 1982 (since their chart year for 1982 actually began in November 1981), and it was also the most successful song on the Hot 100 during the entire decade of the 1980s.

The video featured a lusty Olivia, dressed in a tight leotard, working out in a gym with several overweight men, who eventually transform into attractive muscular young men. The gym setting may have been partly an attempt to divert attention from the overt sexual connotations of the term "physical". This was further emphasised by the twist comedy ending of the video, when the transformed men who are now oblivious to Newton-John's advances are ultimately revealed to be gay (this was also a source of controversy; MTV frequently cut the ending when it aired the video, and the sometimes sensuous nature of the video also led to it being banned outright by some broadcasters in Canada and the UK). The video won a Grammy Award for Video Of The Year in 1983 while the song was banned in South Africa for its suggestive lyrics.

Kim Wilde - Never Trust A Stranger

'Never Trust a Stranger' is the third single from 'Close', the sixth original album by Kim Wilde.

Remixed from the original album track by producer Ricki Wilde, it was released as a single in the autumn of 1988 following the best-selling hit 'You Came' and several European tour dates supporting Michael Jackson.

'Never Trust A stranger' became another big hit Wilde in Europe, reaching number 7 in the UK singles Chart, number 11 in Germany, number 2 in Austria, number 20 in France, number 12 in Sweden, number 5 in Irland and number 4 in Switzerland and Netherland.

An extended version of the single remix was released on the 12" and CD-single formats, and a different remix ('Sanjazz") was released in the UK on an alternative 12" single.

Philip Bailey - Chinese Wall - Album

Philip Bailey (born May 8, 1951, in Denver, Colorado, America) is an R&B, soul, gospel and funk singer, songwriter, percussionist & actor best known as one of the longtime members of Earth, Wind & Fire.

Bailey's most notable solo song was a duet with Phil Collins called 'Easy Lover' which was included on his Gold solo album Chinese Wall . 'Chinese Wall' was released in 1984 on the Columbia Records label. The album was also produced by Collins.

Easy Lover went to numbers two and one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart while Chinese Wall peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 200 and number 10 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.

Phil Collins, during a radio interview, was asked how "he discovered" Philip Bailey. Annoyed with the interviewer's lack of knowledge, Collins made up a story about how he had been filling his car with gas/petrol when he heard the attendant singing...and that turned out to be Philip Bailey. The interviewer believed the whole story, which was also picked up by other media outlets

The Psychedelic Furs are a rock band emerging from the 70's punk era. 1981 saw the release of their second album 'Talk, Talk, Talk' which provided them with their first taste of success.

the second single from the album was called 'Pretty In Pink' which made it to number 43 in the UK singles Chart. The original version is a more darker and more snarling then the re-release.

The latter song served as an inspiration for the 1986 John Hughes film of the same name.

In 1986, the band recorded a sax-infused version of 'Pretty in Pink' for the soundtrack of the film of the same name. Released as a single, it became their biggest hit to that time in the U.S., and their biggest-ever UK hit making number 18 in the singles chart. Butler later claimed that the success of 'Pretty in Pink' caused the band to be pressured into entering the recording studio to record a follow-up release before they were ready. The result was Midnight to Midnight, their biggest Top 40 album success to date.

'Midnight to Midnight' is The Psychedelic Furs' fifth album and was released in 1987.

The album featured the hit 'Heartbreak Beat,' written by Richard Butler, John Ashton, and Timothy Butler.

The second single released was the title track to the movie 'Pretty in Pink' which was a re-recorded version of the 1981 single release. This gave the band a huge hit around the world and helped in the success of the album, making it to number 12 in the UK album Chart and number 29 in the US.

'Easy Lover' is a song written by Philip Bailey, Phil Collins, and Nathan East, and accredited to both singers Bailey and Collins when released as a single.

The song appeared on Bailey's solo album Chinese Wall. Collins has also performed the song in his live shows and it appears on his 1990 album Serious Hits... Live! as well as his 1998 compilation album, ...Hits.

The song was a smash hit in the UK, reaching Number 1 and staying there for four weeks in 1985, and also reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US in 1984.

'Easy Lover' was very successful commercially, selling over a million copies. It has only been certified Gold -- not Platinum -- since the RIAA requirement for a Platinum single wasn't lowered to 1,000,000 units until 1989.

Easy Lover won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Overall Performance in 1985 and was Grammy nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance By A Duo or Group.

The lighthearted video for the song was filmed in London and features Bailey travelling by helicopter to meet Collins in a television studio.

Bronski Beat and Marc Alomond - I Feel Love

In 1985, Bronski Beat joined up with Marc Almond to record a version of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love'.

The full version was actually a medley, also incorporating snippets of Summer's 'Love to Love You Baby' and John Leyton's 'Johnny Remember Me'.

The resulting single was a success, reaching number 3 in the UK Singles Chart, equalling the chart achievement of Smalltown Boy'.

Although the original had been one of Marc Almond's all-time favourite songs, he had never read the lyrics and thus incorrectly sang "What'll it be, what'll it be, you and me" instead of "Falling free, falling free, falling free"

Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up

'Making Your Mind Up' was the United Kingdom's entry to the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, having won the National finals that year with ease.

The song went on to win the Contest itself and began a successful pop career for Bucks Fizz, who became one of the UK's biggest selling artists of the 1980s.

The single was number 1 in the UK singles chart for three weeks in April 1981 and performed well throughout Europe, selling four million copies in total. It was written by Andy Hill and John Danter and also produced by Hill. The song title has also given the name to the UK selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest.

'Making Your Mind Up' is held in affectionate regard by many Eurovision fans, and is generally considered to be a good example of a pop song from the Contest as it has a strong beat and catchy lyrics. Receiving of less favourable response however was the group's performance of the song, which was considered to be off-key, and led to much criticism that the members were chosen more for appearance than vocal ability. In addition, the performance is remembered for the point at which the two male members of the group removed the skirts of the two female members – only to reveal shorter skirts beneath them.

The single began a run of 20 UK hits for the group. Despite the success of the song, some fans of the group don't consider it to be a good reperesentation of their work, while Cheryl Baker doesn't rate it as one of their best songs.

However I still love the song as it was the song that introduced me to the band as I watched them on Eurovision.

Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy

Smalltown Boy is the debut single of the British synthpop group Bronski Beat, released in June 1984. It would also appear on the band's debut album The Age of Consent, released in December 1984.

The single reached number 3 in the UK and number 48 in the U.S. The song is a popular gay anthem and was a huge success worldwide. The song is about a gay boy who faces homophobia, loneliness, and family misunderstanding.

The music video features band member Jimmy Somerville as the boy who has the issues seen above. He makes friends, but is attacked by a gang of homophobes and a policeman brings him back to his home. He catches a train, where he is reunited with his friends. This plot is depicted in the video. In the video, he is seen making friends (played by band members Larry Steinbachek and Steve Bronski) near a swimming pool and they overlook the people swimming. They are later briefly seen at the changing room near the pool. The video ends with Somerville riding on the train to London as he was in the beginning, but this time Steinbachek and Bronski join him.

Bucks Fizz - London Town

'London Town' is a single by UK pop group Bucks Fizz and was released in September 1983, this was the group's tenth single.

The song became their first single to peak outside the top twenty after nine consecutive top 20 hits. Eventually reaching No.34, the song remained on the chart for six weeks.

Written by Andy Hill, the lyrics tell of someone who is finding it difficult to adjust to life in a big city but is determined to stay. Lead vocals on the track are by member Bobby G, although he was unhappy with the way his vocals were mixed, giving them a distorted quality, claiming that he "sounded like a munchkin".

This single was a short-notice replacement for another song, 'Invisible', which featured lead vocals by Jay Aston, but was withdrawn for reasons which are unclear. Details of its release had already been announced to the fan club and mentioned on radio. The song was eventually released on the 12" version of 'I Hear Talk' over a year later.

The Promotional Video features the group performing the track in a variety of indoor locations including a Tube station.

'Waiting' is the second and final studio album by the Fun Boy Three. It was released in 1983 and featured their hit single 'Our Lips Are Sealed,' previously performed by The Go-Go's.

Following the release of the album the band toures the US and then finally broke up.

The album made it to number 14 in the UK Album charts.

Boy George - No Clause 28

Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 was a controversial amendment to the United Kingdom's Local Government Act 1986, enacted on 24 May 1988 and repealed on 21 June 2000 in Scotland, and on 18 November 2003 in the rest of the UK by section(122) of the Local Government Act 2003.

The amendment stated that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship".

Some people believed that Section 28 prohibited local councils from distributing any material, whether plays, leaflets, books, etc, that portrayed gay relationships as anything other than abnormal. Teachers and educational staff in some cases were afraid of discussing gay issues with students for fear of losing state funding.

Because it did not create a criminal offence, no prosecution was ever brought under this provision, but its existence caused many groups to close or limit their activities or self-censor. For example, a number of lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual student support groups in schools and colleges across Britain were closed due to fears by council legal staff that they could breach the Act

The only positive aspect of the introduction of Section 28 was that it served to galvanise the disparate British gay rights movement into action. As the gay rights movements had a focus this resulting protest saw the rise of now famous groups like Stonewall, started by, amongst other people, Ian McKellen, and OutRage!, subsequently led by Peter Tatchell.

For his 6th single release Boy George released a song called 'No Clause 28', as a protest song against the governing UK Conservative Party's legal restrictions on anyone working for a local authority "promoting" homosexuality. 'No Clause 28 reached number 57 in the UK singles Chart.

'I Second That Emotion' is a 1967 hit single released originally by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles for the Motown label. The song was the group's first Top 5 hit on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart. Less than two years later, the single was covered by Motown labelmates Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations, reaching the top 20 in the UK.

The single was released by the UK group Japan as a single in 1980 in Japan. The following year the single was released in Europe while the UK single was eventually released in 1982 following a remix by Steve Nye.

'I Second That Emotion' became the groups second biggest hit eventually reaching number 9 in the UK Singles Chart.

Level 42 - Standing In The Light - Album

'Standing in the Light' is the fourth studio album released by the British jazz-funk band Level 42 in 1983 and was produced by larry Dunn and Verdine White, of Earth, wind and Fire.

The album became the group's first top 10 in the UK album charts, peaking at number 9 and began a new era for the band, being less experimental and jazzy than previous releases.

Notably, the album featured no instrumental tracks whatsoever, with the band now focussing heavily on songs.

The first single, 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind;, was released only in the UK prior to album release and reached number 41 on the UK singles chart. For the album version the song was remixed and a new lead vocal recorded. The second single 'The Sun Goes Down (Living it Up)', with keyboard player and (mostly) backup vocalist Mike Lindup on lead vocals, was released in the UK, Oceania and other parts Europe and America and gave the group its first top 10 in the UK. The third single 'Micro Kid' peaked at number 37 on the UK single charts.

Fun Boy Three and Bananarama - It Aint What You Do

'T'ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)' is a song written by jazz musicians Melvin "Sy" Oliver and James "Trummy" Young. It was first recorded in 1939 by both Jimmie Lunceford and Ella Fitzgeral.

The jazz tune was transformed into a pop song with ska elements in 1982. With the title slightly altered to 'It Ain't What You Do....', it was included on Fun Boy Three's debut self-titled album, but it was not available on a Bananarama album until 1988's Greatest Hits Collection.

Terry Hall of Fun Boy Three owned a copy of Bananarama's previous single 'Aie a Mwana' and after seeing an article about the trio in The Face he decided he wanted them to sing background vocals on this song, solely based on the fact that he liked their look. "It Ain't What You Do...." became a big hit in the UK, climbing to number four in the UK singles chart. The single also made it to number 49 in the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart and number 3 in the Dutch singles chart.

The success of this single also prompted Bananarama to return the favor and have Fun Boy Three sing on their next single 'Really Saying Something'.

'Flaunt the Imperfection' was the 3rd album released by China Crises and was produced by Walter Becker (of Steely Dan fame) and reached number 9 in the UK Albums Chart in May 1985.

According to the album credits, China Crisis was now officially a quintet consisting of Daly, Lundon, Johnson, Wilkinson, and Becker. However, Becker never appeared with the band, and the subsequent tour featured new keyboardist Brian McNeill. Johnson was now credited as co-writer with Daly and Lundon.

Rick Astley - Whenever You Need Somebody - Album

In 1985, Astley was playing the club circuit as a drummer with a soul band called FBI when he was noticed by the record producer Pete Waterman. Waterman persuaded Asltely to work at the PWL recording studio in London and was taughtabout the recording process and groomed for his future pop careeer.

'Whenever You Need Somebody' is Rick Astley's first album released in 1987 on RCA Records.

The album became Astley's best selling album and, according to his own official website, sold 15.2 million copies worldwide.

'Heartbreaker' is an album by Dionne Warwick, her fourth for the Arista label. It was released in 1982 and features the hit single 'Heartbreaker', penned by the Bee Gees.

Barry Gibb produced the album with Karl Richardson and Albhy Galuten.

The album was certified gold in the United States for sales in excess of 500,000 copies and has sold over three million copies worldwide. The album reached number 3 in the UK Albums Chart with the singles 'Heartbreaker' and 'All The Love In The World' both hitting the Top 10.

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

'Never Gonna Give You Up' was sung by Rick Astley. The song was released as the first single from Astley's multi-million selling debut album, 'Whenever You Need Somebody'.

The song became a worldwide number-one hit, initially in the United Kingdom in 1987, where it stayed at number one for five weeks and was the best-selling single of that year and went on to win the Best British Single catagory at the 1988 Brit Awards.

In the music video, directed by Simon West, a smiling Astley sings and dances to the song in various outfits and venues in West London, sometimes accompanied by backup dancers. A bartender played by Clive Clarke gradually shifts from casually noticing Astley's singing to being fully engrossed in the song with energetic acrobatic moves. The athletic exertion of many of the other dancers also becomes more intense over the course of Astley's performance.
