In 1985, Astley was playing the club circuit as a drummer with a soul band called FBI when he was noticed by the record producer Pete Waterman. Waterman persuaded Asltely to work at the PWL recording studio in London and was taughtabout the recording process and groomed for his future pop careeer.'Whenever You Need Somebody' is Rick Astley's first album released in 1987 on RCA Records.
The album became Astley's best selling album and, according to his own official website, sold 15.2 million copies worldwide.
