Links Are Dead - I Know

I keep getting Emails from people asking me to re-upload the links and music etc. I think people are just getting to those particular pages so are not reading the reason for the dead links.

So I am putting this in place so hopefully people will read it and stop Emailing me about it.

The reason the links are dead is that my account with Media Fire has been closed with all 11,000 files lost. That is why you can not download the things and No I can not re-upload them.

Eventually I will start doing that again when I have found something suitable. In the meantime this blog will be information only blog.

Thank you all

Michaael

Red Box - Train

After the success of 'The circle and the Square' and its singles, things went rather quiet for some time.

Due to increasingly strained working relations between the band and the record company, Julian Close left to work in A&R and Simon Toulson-Clarke took time out from writing and recording in order to travel.

In the late Eighties Toulson-Clarke was persuaded to record a second album. Together with new partner Alastair Gavin and producer David Motion he made the album 'Motive'.

'Train' was released as the first (and only) single from that album and failed to enter the charts.

Don't know if a video was ever made for this single. If anyone knows about one and has it to share then please let me know. Thank you.

Wham - Bad Boys

'Bad Boys' was a song by British pop duo Wham! which was a hit in 1983. It was written by George Michael, one half of the duo, and released on Innervision Records.

The song was an energetic but endearing tale of a rebellious teenage lad's struggle against his parents who are concerned about his late-night activities. Although George wrote and sang it from the teenager's perspective (he was himself only 19 when he composed it and the character refers to being that age in the song), he also penned a middle eight in which the "parents" (George putting on more "adult" voices) aired their concerns, which included late nights and cigarettes and ultimately asking"Why do you have to be so cruel?"

It was the third single to be taken from Wham!'s debut album, Fantastic, and reached number 2 in the UK singles chart, going on to become the 26th best selling single of 1983. At the time, Wham! was projecting a hard, politically-motivated image, with Bad Boys one of a number of songs projecting a stance of mood and youthful independence. The single was also released in the United States, peaking at number 60. It was the duo's first time on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, although they were listed as Wham!-UK.

Bad Boys became the biggest hit from the debut album, although it would be usurped by Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go from the album Make It Big in 1984, which became the first of four UK number 1 singles the duo would enjoy. George quickly denounced Bad Boys as a song he hated, stating it was "like an albatross round my neck". The song was famously omitted from the 1997 compilation album If You Were There (The Best of Wham), despite the album including tracks that weren't even released as singles.

Red Box - Heart of the Sun

'Heart of the Sun' was another single released in 1987 from Red Box's debut album 'The circle and the square' . After the chart success of the single 'For America', and ' Lean on Me' the record company was hoping for another audience favourite. Unfortunately, this release stalled at number 71 in the UK singles chart.

Due to increasingly strained relations between the band and their record company, Julian Close left to work in A&R and Simon Toulson-Clarke took time out from writing and recording in order to travel.

'The Songstress' is the debut album by the American R&B/soul singer Anita Baker.

It was originally released in 1983 by Beverly Glen Music, and was Baker's only album for that label prior to signing with Elektra Records with whom she had a string of hit albums. The Songstress was not a commercial success upon its initial release, though the album met with moderate success on the R&B charts.

Baker became a major international success after signing with Elektra Records (a division of Warner Music Group) in 1986, and Elektra acquired the rights to The Songstress and re-released it with a new cover in 1991.

Red Box - For America

Following on from the success of the previous single 'Lean On Me' Toulson-Clarke responded to WEA's request for something to appeal to American radio.

With this in mind the bnd came up with the sardonic 'For America', which lambasted what he saw as the style-over-content approach of the American media, as well as alluding to American military involvement in Grenada and Nicaragua.

The song was not a hit in the USA, though it did reach the top ten in several countries as well as the UK Singles Chart, where it spent twelve weeks in the chart including two at number ten.

UB40 - The Earth Dies Screaming

In October 1980 UB40 released their 3rd single. It was a double A Side called 'The Earth Dies Screaming' and 'Dream A Lie'.

The picture sleeve is a replica of the British Dole form (called a "UB40").
The single made it to number 10 in the UK Singles Chart.
Both tracks were not available on their album 'Signng Off' as they were recorded while the album was being released. It wasn't until 1985, when the album was re-packaged, under the title'The UB40 File', that the 2 tracks were included.

Blondie - Call Me

'Call Me" is a song by the American new wave band Blondie. Released in 1980, 'Call Me' topped the singles charts in both the US (where it became the band's biggest selling single) and the UK (where it became their fourth no.1 hit).

The song was the main theme of the film American Gigolo. European disco producer Giorgio Moroder originally asked Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac to help compose and perform a song for the soundtrack, but she declined (as a recently signed contract with Modern Records prevented her from working with Moroder). It was at this time that Moroder turned to Debbie Harry and Blondie. Moroder presented Harry with a rough instrumental track called 'Man Machine'. Harry was asked to write the lyrics and melody, a process that Harry states took only a few hours. The completed song was then recorded by the band, with Moroder producing. The bridge of the original English language version also includes Harry singing 'Call Me' in Italian ("Amore, chiamami") and French ("Appelle-moi, mon cheri").

In the US the song was released by three different record companies: on the soundtrack album by Polydor, the 7" and 12" on Blondie's label Chrysalis, and a Spanish language 12" version, with lyrics by Buddy and Mary McCluskey, on disco label Salsoul Records.

The Spanish version, titled 'Llámame,' was meant for release in Mexico and some South American countries. This version was also released in the US and the UK and had its CD debut on Chrysalis/EMI's rarities compilation Blonde and Beyond (1993).

In 1988, a remixed version by Ben Liebrand taken from the Blondie remix album Once More into the Bleach was issued as a single in the UK. In 2001 the "original long version" appeared as a bonus track on the Autoamerican album re-issue.

The single was released in the United States in February 1980. It peaked at number 1 for 6 weeks, and was certified Gold (for one million copies sold) by the RIAA. It also spent four weeks at number two on the U.S. Dance chart. According to Billboard magazine, the track was the best selling single of the year in 1980. It was released in the UK two months later, where it became Blondie's fourth UK no.1 single in little over a year. The song was also played on a British Telecom advert from the 1980s. Twenty-five years after its original release, 'Call Me' was ranked at number 283 on the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

There were two videos made: One was compiled clips and video footage in New York and Manhattan of Deborah Harry. The video can be found on the 1991 UK video compilation The Complete Picture: The Very Best of Deborah Harry and Blondie.

The other, which came out in 1980, was non-representational, not featuring any of the band. It depicted a New York taxi driver (who had in fact appeared in numerous other Blondie music videos) driving his Checker through Manhattan traffic. This version was part of the 1981 "Best Of Blondie" compilation video.

Peter Gabriel - Biko

'Biko' is a protest song by British rock musician Peter Gabriel. The song was included on Gabriel's third album, Peter Gabriel (1980).

It is about Steve Biko, a noted black South African anti-apartheid activist. Biko had been arrested by the South African police in late August 1977. After being held in custody for several days, he was interrogated in room 619 of the Walmer Street prison in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. Following the interrogation, during which he sustained serious head injuries, Biko was transferred to a prison in Pretoria, where he died shortly afterwards, on September 12, 1977. Gabriel often plays the song at the end of concerts, encouraging the audience to join in the singing, and eventually leaving only the drummer on stage.

'Biko' was first released as a single in 1980, when it reached number 38 on the British charts. A live version, recorded in July 1987 at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, was released later that year, reaching number 49 in the UK. This version was included on the soundtrack of Cry Freedom, a 1987 film about Steve Biko. 'Biko' was also featured prominently in "Evan", the next-to-last episode of the first season of the American television show Miami Vice.

One line of the lyrics reads "Yihla Moja" which in Xhosa means "Come Spirit".

Barbra Streisand - Woman in Love

'Woman in Love' is a popular 1980 song performed by Barbra Streisand and taken from her album, Guilty. The song was written by Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb of The Bee Gees.

After the success enjoyed by the Bee Gees in the late 1970s, the band was asked to participate in musical endeavors for other artists, and Streisand asked Barry Gibb to write an album for her.

This album ultimately became Guilty; 'Woman in Love', as the lead single, became one of the most successful songs of Streisand's music career. It spent a total of three weeks at the number 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Streisand's fifth (and last, so far) number 1 on this chart. It also spent five weeks atop the adult contemporary chart, her sixth number 1 from that tally. Outside of the U.S., the song also proved very popular, reaching number 1 in many countries, including the United Kingdom.

About midway through the song, Streisand holds a note for about 12 seconds while singing the line: I stumble and fall / But I give you it all (the word "all" is the note held for this duration of time). During the chart run of 'Woman In Love', Casey Kasem claimed in an edition of the radio program American Top 40 that this was the longest unaltered note held by a soloist in a number 1 song, though would be later surpassed by Whitney Houston's vocals on her smash 14-weeks number 1 single 'I Will Always Love You'.

The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me

'Don't Stand So Close to Me' is a 1980 song and hit single by the British rock band The Police. It concerns a schoolgirl's crush on her young teacher and the teacher's nervousness about the situation.

The Police won the 1982 "Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" for this song. A re-recorded version of the song was released in 1986 as 'Don't Stand So Close to Me '86'.

The song deals with the mixed feelings of the teacher (lust/guilt/fear), and inappropriateness leading to confrontation.

The music and lyrics of the song were written by the lead singer of The Police, Sting, who had previously worked as an English teacher. In a 2001 interview for the concert DVD ...All This Time, Sting denied that the song is autobiographical.

The line "Just like the old man in that book by Nabokov" alludes to Vladimir Nabokov's famous novel Lolita which covers somewhat similar issues.

Sting was asked to perform on Mark Knopfler's 'Money for Nothing' as he was in Montserrat at the time, and reused the melody from the chorus of 'Don't Stand So Close to Me' in the counterpoint lyric 'I want my MTV'. It was only after this story was related to reporters during promotions for the Brothers in Arms album that lawyers for Sting became involved, and later copies of the album co-credit the song to Sting. The initial pressings list only Mark Knopfler. It is one of only two shared songwriting credits on any Dire Straits album.

'Don't Stand So Close to Me' appeared on The Police's album Zenyatta Mondatta (A&M), and became a hit 'No.1' UK single along with a corresponding music video. It was the single that 'broke' The Police in the USA, as it reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, peaking at number 10. In the U.K, the track was confirmed by the end of 1980 to have been the biggest selling single of that year.

The B side, 'Friends', was written and sung by Andy Summers and is inspired by Stranger in a Strange Land, a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel III (Melt) - Album

Peter Gabriel is Peter Gabriel's third album. The album contains two of Gabriel's most famous songs, the U.K. Top 10 hit 'Games Without Frontiers' and the political song 'Biko', about the late anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko. The album was remastered, along with most of Gabriel's catalog, in 2002.

This album is often referred to as Melt due to its cover photograph by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis. The photo was taken with a Polaroid SX-70 instant camera, and subsequently modified by Thorgerson or Gabriel. (Thorgerson does not recall whether he or Gabriel manipulated the image.)

The album was Gabriel's first and only release for Mercury Records in the U.S., after being rejected by Atlantic Records, who handled U.S. distribution for Gabriel's first two solo albums and his last two albums with Genesis. Upon hearing mixes of the album's session tapes in early 1980, Atlantic A&R executive John Kalodner deemed the album not commercial enough for release, and recommended that Atlantic drop Gabriel from their artist roster. By the time the album was released by Mercury several months later, Kalodner, now working for the newly-formed Geffen Records label and having realized his mistake, arranged for Geffen to pursue Gabriel as one of their first artist signings. Geffen re-issued the album in 1983 after Mercury's distribution rights to the album lapsed, and has marketed it in the U.S. since.

Gabriel's ex-Genesis bandmate Phil Collins, who succeeded Gabriel as Genesis' lead vocalist, plays drums and provides backing vocals on several of the album's tracks. In particular, Collins played drums on 'Intruder', which has been cited as the first use of Collins' "gated drum" sound. This effect, as created by Collins and Hugh Padgham, was featured on Collins' recordings throughout the 1980s. The distinctive sound was identified via experiments by Collins and Padgham, in reponse to Gabriel's request that Collins and Jerry Marotta not use cymbals on the album's sessions. The drum sound on this album has been noted by Public Image Ltd as influencing the sound on their album Flowers of Romance, whose engineer, Nick Launay, was in turn employed by Collins to assist him with his first solo album, Face Value.

Dexys Midnight Runners - Geno

'Geno' is a song by Dexys Midnight Runners which reached number 1 on the UK singles chart for two weeks in May 1980.

Written by Kevin 'Al' Archer and Kevin Rowland, Geno was the second single from Dexys Midnight Runners and their first number one. A tribute to soul singer Geno Washington, and performed in approximately the style of Geno Washington's Ram Jam Band, the song's classic soul stylings were at variance with the popular new wave and post punk sounds of the time.

The song was the first of two UK number one hit singles achieved by Dexys Midnight Runners. The second, two years later, was Come On Eileen.

The song featured in the first series of 2008 BBC Drama Ashes to Ashes, and was included in the subsequent soundtrack album.

Visage - Fade To Grey

'Fade to Grey' is the second single by the British pop group Visage, released on Polydor Records in November 1980.

The song was the band's most successful single. It became a huge dance floor hit and entered the singles charts in early 1981, peaking at number 8 in the UK Singles Chart and reaching number 1 in both Germany and Switzerland.

The song's structure was primarily composed by Billy Currie and Christopher Payne. While setting the track listing of the Visage album, Midge Ure composed the song's lyrics after Billy Currie suggested the use of the melody for the album. Steve Strange had singing lessons with Ure in order to maintain himself in tune and be recorded. Gary Numan commented in interview for the Numan Digest: "As far as I'm concerned Chris and Billy were the driving force behind writing 'Fade to Grey'. They used to work on it during the sound checks on my '79 tour. Cedric [Sharpley, who was the drummer of the Gary Numan's backing band] was also heavily involved. In those days it was called 'Toot City'".

On the UK Channel 4 show "Top Ten New Romantics" in 1999, Steve Strange claimed to have been the one who came up with the idea for the French vocal in the track (a statement disputed by Midge Ure who claims this idea was his). The French vocal was performed by Brigitte Arendt, a young student from Luxembourg who was Rusty Egan's girlfriend at the time.

A remix by Bassheads/Andy Stevenson was released in 1993 to promote the compilation album with the same title, becoming a modest Top 40 hit. Several other artists have made their own versions of this song.

In 2008, Strange appeared on the BBC series Ashes to Ashes performing the song in the Blitz nightclub.

Kate Bush - Breathing

'Breathing' is a single by Kate Bush, the first cut from her 1980 album Never For Ever, with backing vocals by Roy Harper.

The single was issued on April 14, 1980, four months before the album was released, and reached number 16 in the UK charts. It was the first single by Bush to feature a non-LP track on its B-side, 'The Empty Bullring'.

'Breathing' is about a foetus, very much aware of what is going on outside the womb and frightened by nuclear fallout, which implies that the song is set either during a nuclear war scare or a post-apocalyptic birth. The lyrics also refer to the foetus absorbing nicotine from the mother's smoking. In an interview that year Bush described the song as her 'little symphony', adding that she considered it her best work to date.

The music video features Bush in a womb portraying a foetus.

Lipps Inc - Funky Town

'Funkytown' is a 1980 song made by the disco band Lipps Inc. The song expresses the pinings for a metaphorical place that keeps "me movin', keeps me groovin' with some energy". It became number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, the U.S. Dance and R&B charts, as well as on almost every international chart. In the UK, it became number 2 in the singles chart. It has been called the song that saved Disco and hinted towards Nu-disco.

In 1986, it was covered by Australian band Pseudo Echo, who gave the song a different sound, less of early eighties' electronica and more of later eighties' rock, including a guitar solo in the middle. Pseudo Echo's version spent seven weeks at number one in Australia, (Lipps Inc's was number 1 for only two weeks in Australia), and was also a number-six US hit in July of the following year.

In 2007, it was covered by Alvin and the Chipmunks as their version appeared in the live-action/CGI film adaptation. Their version peaked at number 86. It was also used in the video game Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 by Ubisoft for the music rhythm games.

In 2009, the Swedish group Alcazar released a cover of 'Funkytown', included on their album Disco Defenders.

Kate Bush - Babooshka

'Babooshka' is a song by British singer Kate Bush, taken from her album Never for Ever. Released as a single in June 1980, it spent 10 weeks in the UK chart, peaking at number five. It was an even bigger hit in Australia, where it was the 20th best-selling single of the year.

The song chronicles a wife's desire to test her husband's loyalty. To do so, she takes on the nom de plume of Babooshka and sends notes to her husband in the guise of a younger woman -- something which she fears is the opposite of how her husband currently sees her (Hence the barbed lines: "Just like his wife before she "freezed" on him/Just like his wife when she was beautiful...").

The trap is set when, in her bitterness and paranoia, Babooshka arranges to meet her husband, who is attracted to the character that reminds him of his wife in earlier times. She thereby ruins the relationship due to her paranoia, according to Kate Bush's 1980 interview with the Australian TV series Countdown.

The music video depicts Bush beside a double bass (contrabass) which symbolises the husband, wearing a black bodysuit and a veil in her role as the embittered wife. This changes into an extravagant, mythlike and rather sparse 'Russian' costume as her alter-ego, Babooshka.

The track features John Giblin on bass and marks the significance of fretless bass sounds as instrumental "male" partners through Kate's music in the early eighties.

Kate Bush said that's "something I didn't realise at the time," when she learnt that Babushka is the Russian word for "grandmother" (although the stress in Russian falls on the first syllable, not the second).

'Babooshka' became Bush's second top five hit in the UK and was certified silver for sales of over 250,000 by the BPI.

The B-Side contains her song 'Ran Tan Waltz', her second non-album B-Side. This song is performed as a tragicomedy, where Bush portrays a man bemoaning his bad luck in life being married to a wayward mother. This song also signifies Bush's first use of an expletive in one of her recordings (the word "dick" as cacophemism for penis).

David Bowie - Scary Monsters - Album

Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) is an album by David Bowie, released in September 1980 by RCA Records. It was Bowie's final studio album for the label and his first following the 'Berlin Trilogy' of Low, Heroes and Lodger (1977-1979). Though considered significant in artistic terms, the trilogy had proved less successful commercially. With Scary Monsters, however, Bowie achieved what biographer David Buckley called "the perfect balance" and the album peaked at number 1 in its second week of release.

According to co-producer Tony Visconti, Bowie's method on Scary Monsters was somewhat less experimental and more concerned with achieving a commercially-viable sound than had been the case with his recent releases; to that end the composer spent more time on his own developing lyrics and melodies before recording, rather than improvising music in the studio and making up words at the last minute. Aside from one cover, Tom Verlaine's 'Kingdom Come', all tracks would be credited to Bowie alone, unlike the 'Berlin Trilogy' where he had increasingly relied on input from his collaborators.

Among those collaborators, Brian Eno was no longer present on Scary Monsters, but Chuck Hammer added multiple textural layers deploying guitar synth and, following his absence from Lodger, Robert Fripp returned with the distinctive guitar sound he had earlier lent to 'Heroes'. Bruce Springsteen's pianist Roy Bittan was back for his first Bowie album since Station to Station (1976), while The Who's Pete Townshend guested on 'Because You’re Young'.

The cover of Scary Monsters featured Bowie in the Pierrot costume he wore in the 'Ashes to Ashes' video, rendered in a combination of Brian Duffy's photographs and a painting by Edward Bell. The original vinyl album's rear sleeve referred to four earlier albums, namely the immediately preceding 'Berlin Trilogy' and 1973's Aladdin Sane, the last-mentioned also having been designed and photographed by Duffy. The cover images from Low, Heroes, and Lodger — the last showing Bowie's torso superimposed on the figure from Aladdin Sane's inside gatefold picture — were portrayed in small frames to the left of the track listing. Their whitewashed look was reportedly designed "to symbolise the discarding of Bowie's old personae." These images were not reproduced on the Rykodisc reissue in 1992, but were restored for EMI/Virgin's 1999 remastered edition.

Following the release of 'Ashes to Ashes' in August 1980, prior to the album, and 'Fashion' in October, the title track was issued as a single in January 1981 in both vinyl record and compact cassette form. The album's final single, 'Up the Hill Backwards', was released in March of that year. Other songs from this period, released on CD by Rykodisc, included both sides of the single 'Alabama Song' b/w 'Space Oddity', the latter a stark remake that debuted New Year’s Eve 1979 on The Kenny Everett Video Show and served as a "ritualistic purification" of Bowie’s most famous number prior to its demolition with 'Ashes to Ashes'; 'Crystal Japan', B-side of 'Up the Hill Backwards' in the UK and an A-side b/w 'Alabama Song' in Japan, where it was also used for a Sake commercial; and a new version of Aladdin Sane’s 'Panic in Detroit'.

RCA released Scary Monsters in September 1980 with the promo line "Often Copied, Never Equalled", seen as a direct reference to the New Wave acts Bowie had inspired over the years.

It was highly praised by critics, Record Mirror giving it a rating of seven stars out of five, while Melody Maker called it "an eerily impressive stride into the '80s" and Billboard reported that it "should be the most accessible and commercially successful Bowie LP in years". The album's number 1 placing in the UK charts was Bowie's first since Diamond Dogs in 1974, while its U.S. peak of number 12 was his highest stateside showing since Low almost four years earlier.

Despite the worldwide megastardom and commercial success that Bowie would achieve in coming years, most notably with his next studio album Let's Dance in 1983, many commentators consider Scary Monsters to be "his last great album", the "benchmark" for each new release. Later efforts, such as Heathen or Reality, were often cited as "the best album since Scary Monsters." In the latest edition of his musical biography of the singer, Strange Fascination, David Buckley suggested that "Bowie should pre-emptively sticker up his next album 'Best Since Scary Monsters' and have done with it".

In 2000 Q magazine ranked Scary Monsters at number 30 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2002 Pitchfork Media placed it number 93 in its Top 100 Albums of the 1980s.

Olivia Newton-John and ELO - Magic

'Magic' is a hit 1980 song performed by Olivia Newton-John, from the soundtrack to the film Xanadu. The song was Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for four weeks, from August 2 through August 29, 1980. It also reached a high of Number 2 on the Australian charts and Number 32 in the UK.

'Magic' became Newton-John's biggest Adult Contemporary hit to date. It also became Newton-John's biggest pop hit until 'Physical' ruled the Hot 100 for ten weeks beginning in November 1981.

Two B-sides exist depending on what label and continent the song was released. 'Fool Country' is the B-side of the MCA label release, which also features in the film "Xanadu" but was never released on The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. 'Whenever You're Away From Me' with Gene Kelly is the B-side of the Jet label release.

The Police - So Lonely

'So Lonely' is a song by The Police, appearing on the 1978 studio album Outlandos d'Amour and released as a single in November 1978 and again in February 1980 as a re-release. The single didn't chart on the first occasion but reached number six after the second release. The other singles from Outlandos D'Amour, 'Roxanne' and 'Can't Stand Losing You', followed a similar pattern of not charting very high in 1978, but doing very well on a re-release.

Sting has admitted that he used Bob Marley's 'No Woman, No Cry' as the basis for this song:

"People thrashing out three chords didn't really interest us musically. Reggae was accepted in punk circles and musically more sophisticated, and we could play it, so we veered off in that direction. I mean let's be honest here, 'So Lonely' was unabashedly culled from 'No Woman No Cry' by Bob Marley. Same chorus. What we invented was this thing of going back and forth between thrash punk and reggae. That was the little niche we created for ourselves."

Sting recycled the lyrics in the song's verses from his earlier Last Exit song 'Fool in Love'.

The video for the song depicts the band walking around the streets of Tokyo, including the subway trains.

The song has been covered many times, including a version by Limbeck on the album ¡Policia! - A Tribute to the Police (2005) put out by The Militia Group.
