Spider - Between The Lines - Album

'Between The Lines' is the second album released by the US band Spider. 

Released in 1981 the second album is a more focused record than Spider's self-titled debut, so it's ultimately more enjoyable.

Their attitude doesn't sound quite so forced, and the arrangements are very pleasing, especially compared to the more chaotic first album.

Between the Lines also includes two tracks that were hits for other artists several years later: 'Change' (a moderate hit for John Waite) and 'Better Be Good to Me' (revamped by Tina Turner on her Private Dancer album).

Taken from the album '223B', 'Who Says' is a classic Adult Oriented Rock track produced by Mike Chapman.

The single peaked at number 79 on the hot 100.

Devoid - In Void EP

I have to say that I know nothing on this band. 

I do remember that for some years myself and some friends send each other singles in the post of bands we thought we would each like. 

This is one of those singles that a friend from Italy sent me but I have to admit that I can not remember anything more about this.

Still this EP is a fine example of European 80's music that listening to again I just loved.

Gleaming Spires - How to Get Girls Through Hypnotism

Gleaming Spires was a New Wave Pop group in the 1980s.

Performing as Bates Motel they were enlisted by brothers Ron and Russell Mael to be a part of the 1981-85 incarnation of their band, Sparks. After completing demos with neophyte producer Stephen Hague, principal members Leslie Bohem and David Kendrick (later of Devo) recruited fellow Sparks members Jim Goodwin and Bob Haag to form Gleaming Spires with the blessing of the Mael brothers.

The band released their single 'How To Get Girls Through Hypnotism' in 1982.

Can not find any other info on this single or if it charted. Any more info anyone.

Holly Knight - Heart Don't Fail Me Now

'Heart Don't Fail Me Now' is a single released in 1988 by the US singer songwritter Holly Knight.

Released from her debut album 'Holly Knight' this was to be her only single release from the album.

The single features Daryl Hall on background voculs.  I have to say that I don't know if this ever charted anywhere.

OMD - Free Artefact - The Unreleased '78 Tapes

OMD released their second album 'Organisation' in 1980.

A 7 inch bonus EP entitled ‘Free Artefact - The Unreleased '78 Tapes’ were given away with the first 10,000 copies of the album.

The album came in a grey sleeve with a sticker stating 'Free Artefact - The Unreleased '78 Tapes'.

As well as a merchandising insert the bonus 7 inch EP  - omd dep 2 - featured some previously unreleased tracks.

The tracks were actually recorded during a gig at Eric's Club, Liverpool and feature a spoken introduction by Dave Fairbairn.

These tracks reflected OMD's early collage approach in which excerpts taken from radio and TV broadcasts would be cut and edited into songs. Once When I Was Six features dialogue taken from the TV drama series The Pallisers (1974) based on the the novels of Anthony Trollope.

Yukihiro Takahashi - Drip Dry Eyes

Yukihiro Takahashi (高橋 幸宏 Takahashi Yukihiro, born June 6, 1952) is a Japanese musician, who is best known as the drummer and lead vocalist of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, and as the former drummer of the Sadistic Mika Band.

Takahashi released his 4th solo single in 1981 entitled 'Drip Dry Eyes'.

Taken from the album 'Neuromantic', also released in 1981, the single failed to chart as far as I know.

A Flock Of Seagulls - Space Age Love Song

'Space Age Love Song' is a song released in 1982 by the British band A Flock Of Seagulls.

Taken from their debut album 'A flock Of Seagulls' the single was a moderate success for the band as it reached number 34 in the UK Singles Chart.  The single faired slightly better in the US where it reached number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The single also reached number 68 in Australia and number 31 in New Zealand.

Berlin Blondes - Marseille

The last single released by the group Berlin Blondes was released in 1981.

The band had parted from their record label and had lost some members of the band but decided to release a further single on an independent label Scratch Records.

Again the single failed to trouble the charts and the band disbanded.

Berlin Blondes - Berlin Blondes - Album

Another one from the Berlin Blondes.  This time it is thier one and only album release.

Released in 1980 and titled after the bands name, the album 'Berlin Blondes' didn't do at all well in the charts as it failed to enter the charts. 

As the album and singles didn't sell well the band was dropped from the record label.

Again the album cover made me stop to buy as I loved the first single and felt that the album would live up to that and I wasnt wrong.

I do have a request. I was going to put up the second single 'Framework' but my copy of the B-side 'Zero song - Instrumental' keeps jumping and is no good.  anyone have this and is willing to share I can then complet the back catalogue on this band.  Thank yu all in advance.

Phil Collins - Hello I Must Be Going - Album

'Hello, I Must Be Going!' is the second studio album by English singer-songwriter Phil Collins. It was originally released 1 November 1982. This album's name comes from the Marx Brothers' song with the same name, featured in the movie Animal Crackers. The album was promoted with a tour of the same name.

The album contains the cover version of The Supremes hit 'You Can't Hurry Love', which is one of Collins' best-known singles. None of the other single releases from the album made any significant impact on the charts. Other notable tracks include the modern-jazz instrumental 'The West Side', and 'Thru These Walls', a dark voyeuristic song about a man listening through the wall to his neighbors partaking in unseemly nighttime activities—or at least that's what he's imagining at the time. Other than 'You Can't Hurry Love', Phil Collins produced another hit single which managed to seep into the US Top 40 charts at number 39, called 'I Dont Care Anymore', a dark song with the gated reverb effect and lyrics of his divorce similar to the previous 'In the Air Tonight'.

The more upbeat tracks serve as a preamble to the more commercial sound of the next album No Jacket Required. The album takes much of its inspiration from the problems in Collins' personal life, most notably the painful divorce he was going through at the time. This accounts for the dark and embittered tone on several of the tracks, including the single 'I Don't Care Anymore'. Co-produced with Hugh Padgham, the gated reverb sound of the drum kit is employed in full yet again, with a mixture of very dry drum sounds on tracks like 'I Cannot Believe It's True' in contrast to the huge acoustics used on 'Do You Know, Do You Care?'.

Michael Des Barres And Holly Knight – Obsession

'Obsession” was originally written and recorded as a duet by songwriter Holly Knight and musician Michael Des Barres in 1983, although the recording did not perform well.

This version was prominently featured in the 1983 film A Night in Heaven, most notably in a scene in which Christopher Atkins bumps and grinds in Lesley Ann Warren’s face in sync with the rhythm of the song.

The song was featured on the film’s soundtrack, but did not receive enough attention to warrant much radio play or a place on any Billboard charts.

That version was also featured in the theatrical trailer to the 1986 film 9 1/2 Weeks, starring Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger.

The track was covered in 1984 by the Synthpop-New Wave group Animotion. The song hit number six in the United States, and number five in the United Kingdom in early 1985, helped by a distinctive video that received heavy rotation on MTV.

Donna Summer - I Don't Wanna Get Hurt

'I Don't Wanna Get Hurt' is the second single from the album Another Place and Time by Donna Summer.

The whole album was written and produced by British team Stock Aitken & Waterman (SAW) and was mainly in the style of their "hit factory" sound.

This song was remixed for its release as a single, and in the UK became the Top 10 follow-up to its predecessor, the hit 'This Time I Know It's for Real.'

SAW gained most of their success in Europe and a lot of their material was never aimed at the U.S. market, so this single was never released there.

Icehouse - No Promises

'No Promises' is the first single released by Australian band, Icehouse from the band's 1986 album, Measure for Measure and was released in November 1985 on Regular Records.

The single peaked at number 30 on the Australian singles charts, number 72 on the UK singles Charts and number 79 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

A remix version by [love] tatto was released on the Icehouse album Meltdown in 2002. Dieter Trattmann directed the second version of the video.

Tokyo Pop - Soundtrack

Well one of the actresses of the TV show, Carrie Hamilton stared in a film after she had left which we got around to watching last week so Mark could feature it on his blog.

Well, it's an interesting film showcasing Japanese pop which I enjoyed back in the 80's and 90's with bands such as Sandii and the Sunsetz and X Japan (who make a very brief apperance in the film).

In anycase I managed to get a copy of the soundtrack for Mark so decided to also feature it on this little blog of mine.  Hope you enjoy it.

Tokyo Pop (東京ポップ Tōkyō Poppu?) is a music-centric movie from 1988 that tells the story of a girl from the USA, a boy from Japan, and a briefly successful pop band. The movie contrasts American customs with Tokyo lifestyles, as it presents an evolving love story between the two main characters.

The main actors are Carrie Hamilton for Wendy and Diamond Yukai (aka Yutaka Tadokoro) for Hiro Yamaguchi. Other actors included Gina Belafonte and Tetsuro Tamba. The movie was directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui.

Arcadia - Election Day

'Election Day' was the first single released by the Duran Duran off-shoot band, Arcadia.

It was released by Parlophone Records in October 1985 and subsequently hit the top ten on both sides of the Atlantic, peaking at number 6 in the US and number 7 in the UK, but was the most successful in Ireland, peaking at number 5 and in Italy, peaking at number 1 (also reaching the Top 25 in Germany).

Along with the Arcadia members, 'Election Day' features Grace Jones on vocals and speech

The dark and moody video — with Gothic imagery inspired by Jean Cocteau's 1946 film, La Belle et la Bête — was shot in and around Paris in late September 1985. It was directed by Roger Christian. There was a short cameo appearance by William S. Burroughs. A documentary film was made on the filming and production of the music video

David Bowie - Absolute Beginners

'Absolute Beginners' was the theme tune to the film of the same name (an adaptation of the book Absolute Beginners), composed and performed by David Bowie.

Bowie was good friends with the film's director, Julien Temple (who had worked with him in 1984 on the Jazzin' for Blue Jean short film), and landed both the supporting role of Vendice Partners, and the deal to record the theme tune.

The sessions, at Abbey Road Studios, were set up in a novel way, with a group of session musicians all receiving a card to work at the studio with "Mr X", who turned out to be Bowie. The sessions were completed rapidly, but the song was delayed due to the problems with completing the film. Virgin wanted the release to tie in with the film's opening. Shortly after the sessions wrapped, Mick Jagger flew in to record 'Dancing in the Street', which used many of the same musicians.

The song fused 1950s-style doo-wop with Bowie's 1980s sound.

The single reached number 2 in the UK charts, and number 53 in America. Bowie has since performed it live on his Glass Spider and 2000 tours.

Julian Temple shot the music video, which echoed the 1950s style of the movie. The video was a homage to an old British advert for Strand cigarettes. The ill-fated advertising tagline "You're never alone with a Strand." is quoted by Partners in the film. The video also uses footage from the film.

Released from the 'Baby The Stars Shone Bright' Album the single made it to number 44 on the UK singles Chart and number 27 on the Irish charts.

Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead Or Alive

'Wanted Dead or Alive' is the title of a song from Bon Jovi's 1986 album Slippery When Wet. The song was written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora and was released in 1986 as the album's third single.

In the UK the single peaked at number 13 on the Singles Chart.

The song peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 13 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, making it the third single from the album to reach the Top 10 of the Hot 100.

 Slippery When Wet was the first hard rock album ever to have 3 top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2003 a new version was released on the album This Left Feels Right and this version was also released as a single with a promotional video.

The song is today widely known as one of the bands most famous songs.

The song's title pays homage to Jon's admiration for Old West heroes, and how he identifies with them as being hated (wanted dead or alive). During an interview on Inside the Actors Studio, Jon said he got the inspiration for the song early one morning when he couldn't sleep while riding in a tour bus. The "lifestyle of every rock band" was similar to that of outlaws in that each was, "a young band of thieves, riding into town, stealing the money, the girls, and the booze before the sun came up."

On the band's Behind the Music special on VH1, it is even revealed that the band had originally planned to do an Old West-themed album in the 1980s, but scrapped the idea.

Big Country - Look Away

'Look Away' was the first single taken from The Seer, the third studio album by the Scottish rock band Big Country.

Released in April 1986, it gave the group their fourth UK top 10 hit, and proved to be their highest charting single in the UK, peaking at number 7.

'Look Away' was an even bigger success in Ireland, topping the charts for one week, and becoming the band's only number one single on either side of the Irish Sea.
