Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face

'Eyes Without a Face' is a song by Billy Idol, co-written with guitarist Steve Stevens from Idol's 1983 album Rebel Yell. The song is softer and more ballad-like than most of the album's other singles.

Released on May 29, 1984, this was the second single from the Rebel Yell album. It was very successful and reached a high of number 4 on the Billboard Charts, becoming Idol's first Top 10 hit in the U.S. The single also made it to number 18 on the UK Singles Chart.

The song is notable for the female voice of Perri Lister that sings 'Les yeux sans visage' (French for 'eyes without a face') as a background chorus.

The title of the song refers to French director Georges Franju's movie 'Les yeux sans visage'.

The video was directed by David Mallet and begins with a close-up of Idol's sneering face, interspersed with three unidentifiable ('faceless') female singers. During the song's bridge, the scene changes to Steve Stevens soloing on guitar and Idol in familiar punk poses while dancing in a flaming hexagon surrounded by hooded acolytes. The imagery of the video contrasts with the relative softness of the song and its lyrics of longing.

Reportedly filmed in a marathon 30-hour session, the video was released in June 1984 and subsequently nominated for MTV Video Music Awards for "Best Editing" and "Best Cinematography". The video's extensive filming near fog machines, lighting, and fire sources nearly fused Idol's contact lenses. At the conclusion of filming, Idol attempted to leave, and promptly passed out on the studio lawn from exhaustion. Initially mistaken for a vagrant, a police officer who roused Idol was alarmed at his reddened eyes. The officer immediately brought Idol to a local hospital, where doctors were able to coax out the lenses, saving his vision.

Japan - Life In Tokyo

'Life in Tokyo' was Japan's 5th single.

Released originally in 1979, on the Hansa Record Label, the single failed to make any impact on the UK Singles Charts.

Fast forward to 1981 and Japan are having some success on the Virgin Record Label. Due to this Hansa decided to cash in and release the single for a 2nd time. Unfortunatly this didn't pay off as the single failed to reach the charts.

We move again to 1982 and Japan are making it big now. Hansa decide to re-mix the single and try releasing it again this time with the bands approval. With Sylvian co-ordinating the Sleeve design, this time the relase pays off as the single made it to number 28 in the UK Singles Chart.

The Communards - So cold The Night

Following the number 1 hit of 'Don't Leave Me This Way', The Communards released their 4th single in 1986 entitled 'So Cold The Night'.

This was the bands last single to be released from the bands debut album Communards.

'So Cold The Night' became the bands 2nd top ten hit in the UK Singles Charts as the single made it to number 8 in the charts.

Fashion released their 10th single in 1983 entitled 'Eye Talk'.

Released ofter the moderate success of their previous single 'Love Shadow', 'Eye Talk' managed to make it to number 69 in the UK Singles Chart.

Fatal Charm - Paris

Fatal Charm (also known as The Fatal Charm from 1978–1979) were a punk then rock/pop band from Nottingham, England.

Formed in 1978 by Paul Arnall, they quickly became a three-piece and then a four-piece.

By 1980, the line-up was;

Paul Arnall (guitar, vocals, songwriter)
David Barker (keyboards)
Kevin Davies (bass guitar)
Kevin Gallagher (drums)

As might be expected, the collapse of various recording contracts precipitated frequent changes to the personnel, but the addition of vocalist Sarah Simmonds in the same year breathed new life into the band and enabled Arnall to concentrate on his writing and musicianship.

Supporting big name acts like Ultravox and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark on tour, ensured that the band got some media coverage, including an appearance on the first ever (1982) transmission of Channel 4's groundbreaking music programme 'The Tube', hosted by Jools Holland and Paula Yates.

'Paris' had origianlly been released in 1979 on company records. Backed with the tracks 'Glitterbug' and 'Out Of My Head', the single failed to enter the charts.

'Paris' would again see the light of day. This time produced by Midge Ure of Ultravox the single was again released in 1981 but this time backed by the song 'Christine'. Again the single failed to trouble the charts.

I never got around to getting the first single with the tracks 'glitterbug' and 'Out Of My Head'. If anyone has this released and is willing to share please contact me.

Blue Zone - Thinking About His Baby / Big Thing

Before Lisa Stansfield made it big in 1989, first with Cold Cut and then as a solo artist, she first appeared in a band called Blue Zone. The band added UK to the name in the US due to a name dispute.

The band consisted of:

Lisa Stansfield on Lead Vocals
Ian Devany on Trombobe, Keyboard, Guitar and Backing Voculs Andy Morris on Trumpet, Fluglehorn, Electronic Keyboard and Backing Voculs.

'Thinking About His Baby' was released as a singe in 1987. On the B-Side was the track Big Thing.

These were then flipped in 1988 when the single 'Big thing' was given a release as a 12 inch single and promo single. Backed with the previous A-Side the 12 inch also included the Big Dub Club Mix.

'Thinking About His Baby' eventually reached number 79 in the UK singles Chart while 'Big Thing' failed to chart in 1988.

Lisa Stansfield - This Is The Right Time

'This Is the Right Time' is a song by British singer Lisa Stansfield, released during the summer of 1989 from her first album, Affection.

The song became her first single to reach the UK singles chart, where it reached number 13 and remained on the chart for eight weeks.

In the U.S., the single was released in the fall of 1990, where it peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The song also reached number 1 on the American dance chart, her second song to top this chart ('All Around the World' had gone to number 1 on the dance chart earlier in 1990).

Ultravox - Lament - Single

'Lament' is the third single and title track from Ultravox's seventh studio album, released on the 21st of June 1984.

Lament is a melancholy ballad, the music video depicting the band members visiting their lovers on a remote Scottish island.

The single didn't live up to its smash-hit predecessor, peaking at number 22 in the UK music charts and number 47 in the New Zealand charts.

Sheena Easton - 9 to 5 / Morning Train

'9 to 5' is the title of a popular song written by British songwriter Florrie Palmer and recorded by Sheena Easton in 1980, becoming her biggest hit.

It peaked at number three in the United Kingdom in August 1980 and was released in the United States in February 1981 (retitled 'Morning Train' to avoid confusion with Dolly Parton’s '9 to 5'), where it reached number one.

Early in 1981, EMI Records decided to launch Easton in the US and released '9 to 5' as her debut single. Easton's song went to number 1 on both the U.S. pop and adult contemporary charts; it remained at the top for two weeks on Billboard's pop chart. On Billboard's 1981 year-end charts, it came in as the twelfth-biggest pop and thirteenth-biggest AC hit of the year 1981. It also topped the RPM magazine pop and AC charts in Canada, reigning over the former for two weeks in May 1981.

The song is about a woman who waits at home all day for her man to come home from work. The music video was filmed on the Bluebell Railway, a heritage line running between East and West Sussex in England. The video stars London and South Western Railway No. 488, a preserved LSWR 0415 Class locomotive.

Kate Bush - Suspended In Gaffa

'Suspended in Gaffa' is a song recorded by Kate Bush. It was the third single release from her album The Dreaming in Europe (but not in the UK where 'There Goes a Tenner' was released instead).

The song lyrics are about seeing something one really wants (God in this case), then not being able to see or experience it ever again.

The "gaffa" of the title and chorus refers to gaffer tape, the strong silver-grey tape used by technicians in the film and concert industries.

The B-side is the original mix of 'Ne t'enfuis pas', only released on a handful of singles in late 1982. 'Ne t'enfuis pas', which is misspelled on the original sleeve as 'Ne T'en Fui Pas', means 'Don't run away' in French. In some countries, the B-side was 'Dreamtime' (which originally appeared as the B-side to 'The Dreaming').

A music video was produced for the song, which features Bush performing an interpretive dance in what appears to be a barn.

The single only charted in the Netherlands where it reached number 50 on the Dutch singles chart.

Kate Bush - There Goes a Tenner

'There Goes a Tenner' is a song by the British singer Kate Bush. It was released as a single on 2 November 1982, the third to be taken from her album The Dreaming. It was released only in the UK.

'There Goes a Tenner' is often considered to be something of a "lost single", because when it was released it gained no interest from any radio stations or music television programmes (despite a music video being made). Due to the lack of media interest, the single did not sell well and became the only record by Bush not to chart in the UK. It was originally intended to be Bush's first 12-inch single, but plans to release a 12" were cancelled.

The song lyrics are about a (bungled) bank robbery as told by a fearful and paranoid perpetrator. As Bush stated;

"It's about amateur robbers who have only done small things, and this is quite a big robbery that they've been planning for months, and when it actually starts happening, they start freaking out. They're really scared, and they're so aware of the fact that something could go wrong that they're paranoid and want to go home."

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics and tone take on a dream-like state, which is reflected in the video. A review in Record Mirror commented that despite the comic tone of the song, the end left a rather unnerving effect. Bush sang it in what has been described as "a curious accent that seemed to veer from an aristocrat to an East End villain".

The B-side, "Ne t'enfuis pas" ("Don't Run Away") is spelt incorrectly on the actual single as "Ne T'en Fui Pas", which does not mean anything in French. this has been uploaded on yesterdays post.

Kate Bush - Ne t'enfuis Pas

'Ne t'enfuis pas' is a song written and recorded by Kate Bush. It was released in July 1983 in France and Canada. The song was previously issued as a B-side in the UK to the single 'There Goes a Tenner'.

'Ne t'enfuis pas' tells the story of a woman, worried that her lover is about to leave, wrestling with her conscience over her plans to make him stay.

The B-side, 'Un baiser d'enfant', is a French-language version of 'The Infant Kiss', from Bush's album Never for Ever. Based on the movie The Innocents, it is the story of a governess who is frightened by the adult feelings she has for her young male charge (who is possessed by the spirit of a grown man).

In English 'Ne t'enfuis pas' means 'Don't run away'.

Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush - Don't Give Up

'Don't Give Up' is song written by Peter Gabriel and recorded as a duet with Kate Bush for Gabriel's album So.

The single version spent eleven weeks in the UK Top 75 chart in 1986, peaking at number nine.

It describes the despair of a man who feels isolated and defeated by the economic system, and the support and wise counsel sung in the refrain.

There were two videos created for this song by Godley & Creme. The first consisted of a single take of the singers in an embrace, as the sun enters total eclipse and re-emerges. The second featured Gabriel and Bush's faces superimposed over film of a town and its people in disrepair.

Sheila E - A Love Bizarre

'A Love Bizarre' is a song written by Prince and Sheila E.. The song is a duet between both singers and it appears on Sheila E.'s 1985 album Romance 1600.

The song was Sheila E.'s last major hit and her second biggest behind her debut single 'The Glamorous Life'. The song was performed in the film Krush Groove, in which Sheila E. also had a major supporting role.

The song was a major hit, in the US, and reached number 1 in Urban radio airplay & Dance/Club play, number 2 on the U.S. R&B charts and number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 & Pop radio airplay.

The German 12" single release is backed by the B-Side 'Save The People' that also served as the B-Side for her previous single 'Sister Fate'.

The club scene from Krush Groove in which Sheila E. and her band are performing the song was used for the majority of the music video with a few scenes from the film edited in. The music video uses the song's single edit.

Talking Heads - And She Was

'And She Was' is the name of a rock song written by David Byrne for the 1985 Talking Heads album Little Creatures.

According to Byrne, the song was written about a girl he knew who used to take LSD in a field next to a Yoo-hoo beverage factory in Baltimore, Maryland.

It reached number 54 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number 17 on the UK singles chart.

The accompanying music video was directed by avant-garde filmmaker Jim Blashfield.

China Crisis - The Highest High

China Crisis released their 13th Single entitled 'The Highest High' in 1985.

This was the fouth single released from the Fluant And Imperfection album.

With the big success of their previous singles 'Black Man Ray' and 'King In A Catholic Style', 'The Highest High' did not fair so well as it stalled at number 82 in the UK singles Chart.

Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)

'There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)' is a song performed by British musical duo Eurythmics.

It was written and recorded by band members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart for their fifth studio album Be Yourself Tonight (1985), and features a harmonica solo by American singer Stevie Wonder.

The blues-influenced song was released as the album's second single during the third quarter of 1985 and became a worldwide success; most notably in Ireland, Norway and the United Kingdom, where it became the duo's only chart-topping single to date.

Ever since the record has been covered by several musical artists, including Brittany Murphy, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Leningrad Cowboys, Luciano Pavarotti, Kylie Minogue and, most noticeably, German pop group No Angels who scored their second number-one hit in Austria and Germany with their interpretation for the reissue of their album Elle'ments in August 2001.

Upon its release, 'There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)' became Eurythmics' first (and to date only) number-one single in the UK, also topping the charts in Ireland, Norway and Brazil. While the song peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, it became another Top 10 success for the band in Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria and Australia.

The song's music video was one in a long line of innovative clips from Eurythmics. In the clip, Stewart portrays Louis XIV of France in the Court of the Sun King, while Lennox appears as a singer brought forth to perform and entertain the King. Bored at first, Stewart eventually becomes enthralled with Lennox's performance as the song reaches its conclusion. The video clip features elaborate costuming and set design.

Melissa Manchester (born February 15, 1951) is an American singer-songwriter and actress.

Beginning in the 1970s, she has recorded generally in the adult contemporary genre.

She has also appeared as an actress on television, in films, and on stage.

In 1985 Manchester released her 15th Studio Album entitled 'Mathmatics'. The album made it to number 144 in the US Album charts.

Erasure - Chains Of Love

'Chains of Love' is a song by British synthpop duo Erasure, released in May 1988 as their ninth single overall.

The song was released by Mute Records as the second single from Erasure's third studio album The Innocents. In the United States, Sire Records released it as the first single. The album version was produced by Stephen Hague and was slightly remixed for its single release (most notably the album version starts cold, while the radio version contains a short synthesizer pattern as an intro).

'Chains of Love' became Erasure's sixth consecutive Top 20 hit on the UK singles chart, just missing the Top 10 by peaking at number eleven. In the United States, it became Erasure's mainstream breakthrough by climbing to number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming the group's first entry on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. It also hit number four on the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. 'Chains of Love' remains as Erasure's highest-charting U.S. pop hit.

The song, written by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, is an uptempo dance-oriented synth pop track with Clarke's signature analogue sound and Bell's lyrics about breaking through any restrictions or stereotypes of what love should be. The lyrics allude subtly to Bell's desire for wider acceptance of homosexual couples, his pain evident from the opening lines "How can I explain when there are few words I can choose/How can I explain when words get broken". The chorus is memorable for Bell's use of falsetto.

The music video featured Clarke and Bell performing the song while being hoisted through the air by thick, metal chains.

Abba - The Day Before You Came

'The Day Before You Came' is a song recorded and released by Swedish pop group ABBA. It was originally released in October 1982, as the first new song from ABBA's double compilation album The Singles: The First Ten Years. It is historic as being the final ABBA recording ever, although it wasn't their final song to be actually released.

'The Day Before You Came' was digitally recorded and mixed on August 20, 1982, with the working title of "Den Lidande Fågeln" (The Suffering Bird). Apart from Fältskog's lead vocal and an vocal line of Lyngstad mixed with the instrumental, the only instruments featured on the song were Andersson's synthesizer and drum machine, Ulvaeus' acoustic guitar and a snare drum by Åke Sundqvist.

According to Michael Tretow, ABBA's longtime sound engineer, this was the last ABBA song ever recorded. He further went on to state that Agnetha performed the lead without the lights on and said that mood had become sad and everybody in the studio knew that 'this was the end'.

The single was officially released on October 18, 1982 with another new song, 'Cassandra', as the B-side. By this time, ABBA were experiencing a slow decline in UK single sales. Accordingly, the single peaked at number 32 there.

ABBA's recording however, hit the top 5 in Belgium, Finland, West Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. It also reached number 5 on the Adult Contemporary chart in Canada.

The song was promoted by a music video clip filmed on September 21, 1982, and directed by the team of Kjell Sundvall and Kjell-Åke Andersson, breaking ABBA's eight year directing relationship with Lasse Hallström. The video featured Swedish actor Jonas Bergström as Fältskog's love interest.

Blancmange - The Day Before You Came

Last week I featured Abba's 'The Day Before You Came' single on this blog.

A couple of years after that single was in the charts Blancmange covered the song.

Their version faired better than Abba's version as Blancmange reached number 22 in the UK Singles Chart.
