Maggie Mae - Rock 'n' Roll Cowboy

In 1981, Bucks Fizz won the Eurovision Song Contest with 'Making Your Mind Up'.

German singer Maggie Mae recorded this German cover version with alternative lyrics written by Werner Schüler and Bernd Meinunger.

Entitled 'Rock 'n' Roll cowboy', it's a tale of a woman who is seduced by a Marlboro-man type of figure, but on a motorbike instead of a horse.

Maggie Mae was born as Cosima Andrea Carle on May 13, 1960 and made a name for herself as singer and actress. Soon after the release of this single she met Robert Trammel, with whom she married and moved to the USA. She ended her singing career and started working as a nurse.

Johnny Logan - Hold Me Now

'Hold Me Now' is a song composed and performed by Johnny Logan from Ireland.

In 1987 Johnny Logan won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song. Logan had previously won with 'What's Another Year?' in the 1980 Contest and would go on to write the winner of the 1992 Contest ('Why Me?' for Linda Martin for whom he had previously written 'Terminal 3' at the 1984 Contest)

The song holds the distinction of being one of the very few self-composed songs to win the Contest, and is regarded by many fans as one of the high points of Contest history, recently being voted the third-best song in Eurovision history (behind 'Waterloo' and 'Nel blu dipinto di blu').

After Logan had been proclaimed the winner with this song, he was overcome with emotion during the reprise and was unable to reach the high notes in this part of the song. As he had when he won in 1980 with 'What's Another Year?', he shouted "I still love you, Ireland".

The song was performed twentieth on the night. At the close of voting, it had received 172 points, placing 1st in a field of 22.

In the UK the single made it to number 2 in the charts and was a top ten hit through out Europe.

Angelique - Een Beetje Geld Voor Een Beetje Liefde

It's amazing the things you find when it comes to Eurovision. I had not heard this before but managed to find it on another site and had to listen.

Angelique's 'Een Beetje Geld Voor Een Beetje Liefde' ('A Little Money For A Little Lovin'') was a parody of Nicole's winning song for the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest, 'Ein Bisschen Frieden'.

Basically the singer describes the day job of a hooker, indirectly implying that sweet innocent Nicole had a job on the side as well.

The song was a big success in the Netherlands, released in July 1982 - not long after the original - it reached number 2 in the Dutch Top 40.

Vikki - Love Is

'Love Is', written and composed by James Kaleth and Vikki Watson, was the United Kingdom's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1985, performed by the latter composer, Vikki Watson, credited at Eurovision as Vikki.

Vikki won the right to perform at Gothenburg by winning the UK national final, A Song for Europe, where she was the first singer to perform.

At Gothenburg, the song was performed fourteenth on the night.

At the end of judging that evening, 'Love Is' took the fourth-place slot with 100 points. At the time, it was one of the few entries that managed to receive 100 points without receiving any 12 point allotments from any jury. It was also the UK's strongest showing since winning the 1981 Contest with 'Making Your Mind Up.'

The song was a contemporary ballad about a man and a woman who are both too afraid to plunge head-first with their emotions into a love affair; while both of them want to be loved by the other, both of them are letting their heads rule their hearts. In the chorus, Vikki sings that "love is" the product of a number of impulsive decisions, such as "taking a chance on two hearts beating as one." Vikki nominally used a single chair as a prop, first sitting in it while singing the song, then circling it and abandoning it entirely by the second half of the song.

Despite the high showing at Gothenburg, the song placed at number 49 on the UK Singles Chart.

Riccardo Fogli - Per Lucia

Riccardo Fogli was born on October 21, 1947 in Pontedera, Italy.

After some time in bands like Slenders and Pooh, he started a solo career in 1973. His main success, however, came in the Eighties.

In 1983, he represented Italy during the Eurovision Song Contest with the song 'Per Lucia' ('For Lucia').

He finished in joint eleventh place, with Finland, in a field of 20 competitors with 41 points.

Johnny Logan - Hold Me Now - Album

In 1987 Johnny Logan had won the Eurovision for the second time with the song 'Hold Me Now'.

Following on from that success Logan released a second single that year which was a cover of the 10cc song 'I'm Not In Love', produced by Paul Hardcastle.

An album entitled 'Hold Me Now' was also released but the second single and album release did not provide a sustainable market in the UK so Logan then concentrated on the Irish and Europe market.

The album made it to number 83 in the UK Album Charts for 1 week only.

Emly Starr - Samson

Emly Starr was born as Marie-Christine Mareel in Laarne, Belgium on September 5, 1957. Her music career started in 1976 with the single 'Tears of gold'.

After five years, she represented Belgium during the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with the song 'Samson'. The song finished in 13th place, in a field of 20 participants with 40 points.

The song is inspired by the Biblical story of Samson, with Starr singing that the object of her desires is like Samson in that he is not interested in love. She suggests that he should 'find yourself a Delilah'.

Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You

'Waiting for a Girl Like You' is a song by British-American rock band Foreigner. The distinctive synthesizer theme was performed by the then-unknown Thomas Dolby.

It was the second single released from the album 4 (1981), and was co-written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones.

It has become one of the band's most famous songs worldwide, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for ten weeks and number 1 on Billboard's Rock Tracks chart for one week. On the Billboard adult contemporary chart, the song topped out at number 5. In the UK, the song peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart.

'Waiting for a Girl Like You' achieved an odd chart distinction by spending a record-setting 10 weeks in the nuber 2 position of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, without ever reaching the top. It was held off the number 1 spot by Olivia Newton-John's single 'Physical' for the first nine of those weeks, and by Hall & Oates' 'I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)' for the remaining week.

Prior to the release of this song as a single, Foreigner was considered a hard rock band getting airplay mostly on rock stations and some Top 40 ones. This song gave the group more exposure on top 40 radio stations. Also because the song was soft, most adult contemporary radio stations played it as well giving this group exposure to an audience they were not really aimed at in general. This song was pivotal in exposing harder rock acts to a broader audience.

Live Report - Why Do I Alway's Get It Wrong

'Why Do I Always Get it Wrong?', written by Brian Hodgson and composed by John Beeby, was the United Kingdom's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1989, performed by the sextet Live Report, led by Ray Caruana.

Live Report won the right to perform at Lausanne by winning the UK national final, A Song for Europe, where they were the sixth act to perform.

At Lausanne, the song was performed seventh on the night. At the end of judging that evening, 'Why Do I Always Get it Wrong?' took the second-place slot with 130 points. Norway, Portugal, Luxembourg, France and Germany all gave their 12 point designations to the UK that evening. Despite losing the contest by six points to Yugoslavia's Riva with 'Rock Me,' the UK actually received the most sets of 12 point designations for the evening (Yugoslavia received the 12 points from four countries).

For the second year in a row, the UK entered a ballad at the Eurovision final. This song revolved around a man who took off running "where his lover won't find him," as she causes him to hurt, and leaving her presence for good is the only way to stop the pain. Crying out against his illogical love for the woman who has treated him so badly, Caruana asks, "Why do I always get it wrong?"

After Eurovision, the song placed at number 73 on the UK Singles Chart.

Was Not Was - Walk The Dinosaur

'Walk the Dinosaur' is a hit single recorded and released by the band Was (Not Was) in 1987, later featured on their hit 1988 album, What Up, Dog?

When released in the UK in 1987, the song reached number 10 on the charts, becoming the group's first Top 10 hit in the UK.

After the music video to the song, which featured four half-naked cavewomen dancing to the song, a Flintstones-style TV playing clips from Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur, and then modern people dancing to the song in the "Everybody kill the dinosaur" part, received heavy rotation on MTV, the song reached number 7 on the U.S. charts in 1989, two years after its UK success. The song is the biggest hit single for the band in their home country.

Riva - Rock Me

'Rock Me' was the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 1989, performed by Riva, representing Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the first and only time that this country would win the Contest. The song was performed in Serbo-Croatian.

The song's victory led to international awareness of Yugoslav rock.

The SOS Band - Just Be Good To Me

'Just Be Good to Me' is a 1983 single by The SOS Band, written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

The single reached number two on the U.S. R&B chart, number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number three on the dance chart that year

The song has subsequently been covered by several artists. Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim) was involved with a very successful UK version with his band Beats International who took the song to number one as 'Dub Be Good to Me', which featured a backing track consisting mainly of a sample of The Clash classic, 'The Guns Of Brixton'.

The original single made it to number 13 in the UK Singles Chart.

Scott Fitzgerald - Go

'Go', written and composed by Julie Forsyth, was the United Kingdom's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1988, performed by Scott Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald won the right to perform at Dublin by winning the UK national final, A Song for Europe, where he was the eighth singer to perform. Fitzgerald was also the first singer to be chosen to represent the United Kingdom via a national telephone vote. In Dublin, the song was performed fourth on the night.

At the end of judging that evening, 'Go' took the second-place slot with 136 points. Turkey, Belgium and Italy awarded their 12 point designations to the UK that evening. In one of the closest voting rounds up to that time, the UK lost the competition by one point to Switzerland's representative, Canadian singer Celine Dion, with her song 'Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.'

According to author and contest historian John Kennedy O'Connor, this was the closest contest yet, with the winning margin being just 0.73%. The strong showing in the 1988 contest was an indicator of things to come for the United Kingdom, as it would become the first of eleven straight Top Ten placings in the Contest, and the first of four second-place finishes in the next six years.

In a departure from the past two years, an easy listening ballad was on offer this year, telling the story of two former lovers meeting by chance. Fitzgerald, in the role of the lovesick man, relates the sad story; his former lover had left him years before for another man, and now that she has returned, so has all the sorrow he felt.

After the Eurovision, the song placed at number 52 on the UK Singles Chart.

Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

'Everybody Wants To Rule the World' is a song by the British New Wave band Tears for Fears.

It was the band's ninth single release in the United Kingdom (the third from their second LP: Songs from the Big Chair) and seventh UK Top 40 chart hit, peaking at number two in April 1985.

In the U.S., it was the lead single from the album and gave the band their first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit, remaining there for two weeks. It also reached number-one on both the Hot Dance Music/Club Play and Hot Dance Singles Sales charts in the U.S.

Ironically, considering the song's overwhelming success, 'Everybody Wants To Rule the World' was somewhat of an afterthought during the recording of Songs from the Big Chair. According to Roland Orzabal, he initially regarded the song as a lightweight that would not fit with the rest of the album. It was producer Chris Hughes who convinced him to try recording it, in a calculated effort to cross over into American chart success.

Orzabal would later reveal in a radio interview that the beat from the song was "borrowed" from another UK Top 40 chart hit: 'Waterfront', by Simple Minds who were recording their album Sparkle in the Rain in the studio next door.

Orzabel said that the song was written and recorded in two weeks and was the final track to be added to the Songs from the Big Chair album. The shuffle beat was alien to our normal way of doing things. It was jolly rather than square and rigid in the manner of 'Shout', but it continued the process of becoming more extrovert.

As was the case with the three hit singles from Tears for Fears' debut LP The Hurting, the song featured bassist Curt Smith on lead vocals.

Linda Martin - Terminal 3

'Terminal 3' was the Irish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1984, performed in English by Linda Martin.

The song was written and composed by previous Contest winner Johnny Logan, who had won for Ireland in the 1980 Contest and would later go on to win the 1987 Contest as a performer before writing another song for Martin to win the 1992 Contest with. Thus, the result of this song is part of Logan's positioning as the most successful Contest entrant in history.

The song itself is a moderately up-tempo number, with Martin singing about her feelings while waiting for her lover to disembark from a flight from the United States. She sings that her own feelings for him have not changed and that she hopes that the same is true of him, although "He's been away too long now".

The central motif of the song is the line "Terminal Three: flight's on time", which Logan is on record as admitting was written simply because he was in Terminal Three of Heathrow Airport at the time he wrote the song.

The song was performed ninth on the night and at the close of voting, it had received 137 points, placing 2nd in a field of 19.

'Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)' is the seventh and final single from American R&B singer Janet Jackson's third studio album, Control (1986).

While 'Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)' was officially released in the United Kingdom and Australia, it went for airplay single in the United States in 1987.

The song was written by Jackson and collaborators/producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. It performed poorly on the UK Singles Chart, only reaching number fifty-nine. In the U.S., though it never charted, it became a famed quiet storm staple on adult R&B radio stations.

No music video was filmed for the single. For the first time, Jackson included the song on her 2008 Rock Witchu Tour.

Belle And The Devotions - Love Games

'Love Games', written and composed by Paul Curtis and Graham Sacher, was the United Kingdom's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1984, performed by the trio Belle and the Devotions, which was headed by Kit Rolfe.

The song was an homage to the girl group sound of 1960s Motown, with the girls lamenting that their lovers had "played love games" with them and broken their hearts.

The trio was dressed in bright day-glo coloured jackets and miniskirts, with similarly eye-popping hair (Rolfe went for a platinum blonde, while the other singers dyed their hair yellow and bright red, respectively).

The song came 7th in a field of 19 with 63 points.

After Eurovision, the song peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart.

Orange Juice - Falling And Laughing

'Falling and Laughing' was the debut single by Scottish post-punk band Orange Juice. It was the first single released by the independent rock label Postcard Records, owned by Alan Horne.

'Falling and Laughing' marked a new shift of the post-punk sound in general, by using themes that were not normally used in the genre, such as love and innocence. It also had a brighter sound, contrasting with the music that their contemporaries, including Joy Division and Echo & the Bunnymen, were making at the time, while maintaining its roots in the experimentalism of the genre.


The single has also been credited to giving birth to the Indie pop genre.

Vlado and Isolda - Ciao Amore

Vlado and Isolda was a pop duo that represented Yugoslavia at the Eurovision Song Contest 1984 with the song 'Ciao, Amore'.

The duo consists of the pop singers Vlado Kalember and Izolda Barudžija. The latter had appeared as a singer or back-up singer in two previous contests, her most famous appearance being in the 1983 entry 'Džuli'.

The entry did not do very well as it finished 18th in a field of 19 with 26 points.

André Cymone - The Dance Electric

André Cymone (born Andre Simon Anderson) is an American bassist, songwriter and record producer.

Cymone was a bass guitarist for recording artist Prince's touring band, pre-Revolution.

Cymone began a solo career in 1981. His song, 'The Dance Electric' was written by Prince and reached number 10 on the US R&B charts.

Cymone later co-wrote and produced songs for other acts, including Jody Watley's 'Looking for a New Love', 'Still A Thrill' and 'Real Love'.

The duo Dollie de Luxe represented Norway in the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest with 'Lenge leve livet'.

The song is a modern ballad, with the duo singing the praises of life. They explain that it makes sense to live to the full, because nobody knows for sure what the future may bring.

Shock - Angel Face

Shock is a music/mime/dance/pop group that was notable in the early 1980s for supporting English pop groups such as Gary Numan, Adam and the Ants, Depeche Mode and Famous Names, led by Steve Fairnie.

Based in London, England, Shock performed in clubs like The Haçienda, The Warehouse (Leeds) and The Blitz Club (home of the Blitz Kids) and The Venue (London). With costumes from Kahn and Bell (designers for Duran Duran), miming to music by Fad Gadget, Landscape, Kate Bush and Wilson Pickett, they found themselves in the vanguard of the New Romantic cult of the early '80's, alongside Boy George, Duran Duran, Steve Strange and Spandau Ballet.

Their first record 'Angel Face' on RCA Records -- with production by Rusty Egan (Visage) and Richard James Burgess (Landscape) -- was a dance floor hit. Released in 1980 the single did not chart.

Avi Toledano - Hora

'Hora' (Hebrew script: הורה, English translation: 'Hora') was the Israeli entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1982, performed in Hebrew by Avi Toledano.

The song is a moderately up-tempo number, with Toledano singing about the joy he feels in seeing parts of his country and dancing the traditional 'Hora' folk dance.

The song was performed fifteenth on the night. At the close of voting, it had received 100 points, placing 2nd in a field of 18.
