Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasure Dome - Single

Well I am going on a little bit of an indulgent streak this week as I have been listeniing to early Frankie Goes To Hollywood recently. So I have deceided as it has been a long time since my last Frankie post I will catch up a bit this week. Normal posting wii resume next week so here we start with the 4th single.

'Welcome to the Pleasuredome' is the title track to the 1984 debut album by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The lyrics of the song were inspired by the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

In March 1985, the album track was substantially abridged and remixed for release as the group's fourth UK single.

While criticized at the time of release and afterward for being a song that glorifies debauchery, the lyrics (and video) make clear that the point of the song, just as Coleridge's poem, is about the dangers of this kind of lifestyle. This song, along with 'Relax', made Frankie Goes To Hollywood even more controversial than they already were.

Despite the group's record label (ZTT) pre-emptively promoting the single as "their fourth number one", an achievement that would have set a new UK record for consecutive number one singles by a debuting artist, 'Welcome to the Pleasuredome' peaked at number two in the UK singles chart, being kept off the top spot by the Phil Collins/Philip Bailey duet 'Easy Lover'. The single spent a total of eleven weeks on the UK chart.

It was the first release by the group not to reach number one and, despite representing a creditable success in its own right, it symbolically confirmed the end of the chart invincibility that the group had enjoyed during 1984. Frankie Goes to Hollywood would not release another record for seventeen months, and they would ultimately fail to emulate their past glories upon their return.

The spoken-word introductions to both 12-inch mixes are adapted from Walter Kaufmann's 1967 translation of Friedrich Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy. The recitation on the first 12-inch ('Real Altered') is by Gary Taylor, whilst that on the second 12-inch ('Fruitness') and the cassette is by actor Geoffrey Palmer. It is unknown whether Palmer's concluding 'Welcome To The Pleasuredrome' was a genuine mistake or a deliberately scripted one.

This is the only single from the group that was not released on a cd single at that time. 'Relax', 'Two Tribes' and 'The Power Of Love' all saw a cdmaxi release in Germany at the end of the 80's. Welcome to the Pleasuredome was not given such a release.

All releases featured either a short, long or even longer version of 'Get It On', originally recorded for a BBC Radio 1 session in 1983, plus a faded or full length version of 'Happy Hi!', the only brand-new song to appear on the single.

Both 'Relax (International)' and 'Born To Run' are faux-live recordings (ie. with studio overdubs), based on an actual live appearance on The Tube's "Europe A-Go-Go" in Newcastle during early January 1985.

The video, by Bernard Rose, features the group stealing a car, going to a carnival and encountering all manner of deceptively "pleasureable" activities. The audio soundtrack of the video was included as part of the cassette single.

Matt Bianco - Yeh Yeh

Matt Bianco is a UK band that was formed in 1983. They are mainly known for their success in the mid 1980s and their jazz, Latin-flavoured music.

'Yeh Yeh' is a Latin soul song. It was written by Rodgers Grant and Pat Patrick and first recorded by Mongo Santamaría on his 1963 album, Watermelon Man.

Matt Bianco, who covered the song in 1985, reaching number 13 in the UK Singles Chart.

Animal Magnet - Welcome To The Monkey House

Paul Caplin (born 31 December 1954, London) trained as a mathematician at Imperial College, London and Cambridge University.

He began his musical career in New Romantic rock group Animal Magnet, which released a synthpop track called 'Welcome to the Monkey House' in 1981 and were the support act on Duran Duran's first national tour.

Caplin left Animal Magnet to become the secret mastermind behind the 1980s avant-garde new-wave pop project Haysi Fantayzee, the other members being Jeremy Healy and Caplin's then girlfriend, Kate Garner.

Modern Romance - Ay Ay Ay Moosey

Modern Romance were a British pop music band that found popularity in the early 1980s.

Formed in 1980 by previous members of an earlier band, The Leyton Buzzards, the band enjoyed a string of UK chart hits before they broke up in 1985.

Following hot on the heels of their début UK chart success 'Everybody Salsa' in 1981, Modern Romance reached number ten of the UK Singles Chart with 'Ay Ay Ay Ay Moosey' - an eponymous chorus chanting salsa linked lyrics.

'If It Happens Again' was the seventh top 10 hit in the UK for UB40.

Released from the album ' Geffery Morgan' in 1984 the single peaked at number 9 in the UK singles chart.

The song may be one of the most catchy ones in the whole UB40 catalogue.

Orange Juice - Rip It Up

Orange Juice was a Scottish post-punk band founded in the middle class Glasgow suburb of Bearsden as the Nu-Sonics in 1976.

Edwyn Collins formed the Nu-Sonics (named after a cheap brand of guitar) with his school-mate Alan Duncan and was subsequently joined by James Kirk and Steven Daly, who left a band called The Machetes.

The band became Orange Juice in 1979.

They are best known for the hit 'Rip It Up', their 10th single release, which reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1983, the band's only UK Top 40 hit.

Boy George - Boyfriend - Album

Boy George's third solo album was entitled 'Boyfriend' and was released in 1989 by Virgin in Europe and Japan only.

This album, just like 'Tense Nervous Headache' before it, died on the charts and was quickly deleted by Virgin.

Some of the tracks were remixed and appeared on the USA Only 'High Hat' album.

'Don't Take My Mind On A Trip', 'You found Another Guy', 'Whether They Like It Or Not' and 'No Clause 28' were all singles from the album.

'The Living Daylights' is the song performed by A-ha for the James Bond film of the same name.

It was co-written by guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Bond composer John Barry.

The single made it to number 5 on the UK singles Chart.

The music video, which was directed by Steve Barron, was shot at the 007 Stage in London, which was built specifically for the Bond franchise

Adam And The Ants - Young Parisians

Young Parisians was the debut single of Adam and the Ants, released on Decca Records, on 20 October 1978. It was produced by the band's singer Adam Ant and session pianist Jo Julian. At this point, the other permanent members of the band were Andy Warren (bass), Dave Barbe (drums) and Matthew Ashman (guitar). Saxophonist Greg Mason also appeared on the A-side.

At the time, the band were combining the punk sound of their earliest days with a more experimental ethos which would characterize their first two albums, the 1979 debut Dirk Wears White Sox and to some extent its 1980 follow-up Kings of the Wild Frontier (by which time only Adam Ant remained from the line-up of the debut single). The A-side Young Parisians was an acoustic/jazz ballad, while the B-side, Lady demonstrated the band's capacity for fast-paced punk rock.

In December 1980, following the initial success of the Kings album and its singles Dog Eat Dog and Antmusic, the single was re-promoted in the UK, reaching number 9 on the UK Singles Chart.

The Jacksons - Can You Feel It

'Can You Feel It' was a hit recording by funk and soul group The Jacksons, recorded in March 1980 and released on September 22, 1980 as the first track on their album Triumph.

Written by brothers Michael and Jackie, the song featured solo leads by Randy and Michael. Released as a single in 1981, the song reached number 77 on the pop charts and number thirty on the R&B charts in United States, but reached number six in the UK and number two in the Netherlands in 1981.

The accompanying video, directed by Bruce Gowers and Robert Abel, was noted for its remarkable special effects created by Robert Abel and Associates. Michael created the video's concept, and Tito's sons Taj and Taryll appeared as extras. In 2001, it was voted one of the 100 best videos of all time, in a poll to mark the 20th anniversary of MTV.

Marilyn - Calling Your Name

While a regular at the London Blitz Club Robinson, now adopting the name "Marilyn", was introduced to Boy George through a mutual friend and fellow Blitz kid, Philip Sallon.

Boy George and Marilyn moved into a squat in Kentish Town, a suburb of London.

While Boy George went on to form Culture Club in 1981 and secured a recording contract with Virgin Records, Marilyn was still scouting for a recording contract and had relocated to Los Angeles for some time to work on an album for James Cleveland.

He teamed up with songwriter and pop entrepreneur Paul Caplin, with whom he co-wrote 'Calling Your Name'.

By this point, Culture Club had made a commercial impact with their debut album, and record companies were seriously looking for artists with a similar cross-dressing image.

Due to this Marilyn was signed to Phonogram Records and released his debut single, 'Calling Your Name', in October 1983. The single reached number 4 in the UK, number 4 in Australia, and number 1 in Japan. The lyrics to the song were reportedly aimed at Boy George, with whom Marilyn was now having a stormy off-and-on friendship.

Marilyn - Despite Straight Lines - Album

Peter Robinson (born 3 November 1962), better known as Marilyn, is a British pop singer who achieved international fame in the 1980s with his hit song 'Calling Your Name'.

Robinson was a part of the British New Romantic movement, a late 1970s underground post-punk fashion movement that became popularised in the early 1980s. He and Boy George were regulars at 'The Blitz' nightclub (regulars being labelled as "Blitz Kids"), a highly stylised nightclub in London.

Following an appearance in the video for Eurythmics' hit single, 'Who's That Girl?' in 1983, which garnered him considerable press attention, Marilyn was signed to Phonogram Records.

However, after much delay, and 18 months after his first hit, Marilyn's debut album 'Despite Straight Lines' was released in June 1985.

The album featured his three previous hits and its release was led by a new single, 'Baby U Left Me (In the Cold)'. However, due to possible loss of momentum, both the new single and album were commercial failures in the UK.

Peter Gabriel - Red Rain

'Red Rain' is the first track on Peter Gabriel's 1986 solo album So. In the USA, it reached number 3 on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Stewart Copeland from The Police played the hi-hat for the rain-like background sound; the rest of the drumming was handled by Jerry Marotta.

The song is a combination of several inspirations. The lyrics directly reference a recurring dream Gabriel was having where he swam in his pool drinking cold red wine.

Earlier in his solo career, Gabriel had an idea for a movie, Mozo. In it, villagers were punished for their sins with a blood red rain. "Red Rain" was to be the theme song. This idea was eventually scrapped, although there was a mention of Mozo in the song 'On the Air' in Peter Gabriel (II). Down The Dolce Vita, Here Comes The Flood, Exposure, and Big Blue Ball are also reference the Mozo story, as well.

According to the sleeve notes from the remastered version of So, it is also a reference to acid rain. Based on one interpretation of some of the lyrics it is also thought to refer to nuclear fallout.

Kool And The Gang - Get Down On It

'Get Down on It' is a song originally recorded by the funk/R&B/pop band Kool & The Gang on their album Something Special in 1981.

The song reached number 10 on the Billboard charts in early 1982, displaying some of the characteristics of a blend of disco and funk, with the title of the song repeating continuously.

The song was released in the UK on the British charts on 19 December 1981 on the record label De-Lite and reached number 3, their highest chart hit in the UK at that time. It spent a total of 12 weeks in the charts before drifting out of sight.

Ten years later it was re-released in the UK charts on the record label Mercury but only reached number 69 and was on the chart for only one week. In 1997 the German rapper and DJ Der Wolf covered it for the German song 'Gib's doch gar nicht'. In 2004, the song was re-recorded as part of a collaboration with Blue. The song was the last single from Blue until the new Eurovision single release.

XTC - Drums and Wires - Album

Drums and Wires is an XTC album released on 17th August 1979.

It reached Number 34 on the UK album chart, and Number 176 on the U.S. Billboard album charts.

It contained the successful single 'Making Plans for Nigel', which was released on 14th September 1979, and reached Number 17 on the UK singles chart.

It also contained the original recording of 'Ten Feet Tall', a re-recorded version of which was released in March 1980 in the U.S. only, as their first U.S. single, designed to coincide with the band's first American tour.

Certain versions of the album also include 'Life Begins at the Hop', which was released on 27th April 1979, and reached Number 44 on the UK singles chart.

This album was originally released with at least six different track listings in various parts of the world. Some versions contained a two/three-song 7inch single in addition to the 11 or 12 song album. One version moved all of Colin Moulding's songs to side one. The initial US release featured the single version of 'Ten Feet Tall'. Another version of the LP contained 14 songs.

The first 20,000 copies of the LP had a free 7 inch single, 'Chain Of Command' 'Limelight' (Moulding).

The song 'Life Begins at the Hop' (Moulding), released as a 7 inch single before the original LP's release, appears on other versions of the album, either as a substitution, a bonus single, or bonus tracks on CD releases.

Thompson Twins - Nothing In Common

'Nothing In Common' was a 1986 movie starring Tom Hanks, and a song from British pop group Thompson Twins which was included in the film’s soundtrack.

The track was written by band members Tom Bailey and Alannah Currie.

The single was only released in the US where it made a mild impression on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching fifty-four the week of September 13, 1986.
