Bananarama Love In The First Degree

'Love in the First Degree' is Bananarama's 20th single and is included on their fourth studio album Wow! and was released as its second single except in the U.S., where it was the album's third single (following 'I Can't Help It'). The track was co-written and produced by the Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) trio.

The song is an uptempo pop tune similar to many hits produced by SAW during this time period. The surreal lyrics, composed by Siobhan Fahey and built upon by SAW and Bananarama members Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward, describes a dream in which they find themselves being tried in court for love.

The music vdeo featured Bananarama (including a very pregnant Fahey) performing the song in a jail cell, dressed in prison uniforms, as several male dancers perform around them. The imagery plays off of Elvis Presley's 1957 movie Jailhouse Rock. As one of their final performances with Fahey, the group performed the song at the BRIT Awards with a large entourage of male dancers dressed only in black bikini briefs. The song was nominated for best British single but lost to Rick Astley's 'Never Gona Give You Up'.

'Love in the First Degree' is Bananarama's biggest-selling single in the UK. It holds a three-way tie for their highest UK Singles Chart placing (number three). The single also became a top-ten success in Australia and earned a top-twenty placing in New Zealand. In the United States the song just missed the top-forty, but was a top-ten club hit. The B-side was Mr. Sleaze in which Sara Dallin not only sang on that track but also played bass guitar like she did on Love in the First Degree.

Bananrama - He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'

'He Was Really Sayin' Somethin' is a soul song written by Mowtown Records songwriters Norman Whitfield, William "Mickey" Stevenson, and Edward Holland Jr. in 1964. The song is notable in both a 1964 version by American Motown girl group The Velvelettes, and a 1982 hit version (with the title altered to "Really Saying Something") by Bananarama who recorded it and released it as the first single from their debut album Deep Sea Skiving. Providing background vocals is Fun Boy Three, a male vocal trio who had a hit with Bananarama earlier in the year with another cover, 'Tain't What You do (It's The Way That You Do It)'.
The single became the second consecutive top-five hit for both Bananarama and Fun Boy Three, peaking at number five in the UK Singles Chart. It also received heavy play on the then-young MTV network in America. 'Really Saying Something' was both groups' second chart entry in Australia, peaking at number seventy-four. The B-side, 'Give Us Back Our Cheap Fares', has been issued on CD for the first time. It can be found on the 2007 UK reissue of Deep Sea Skiving as one of five bonus tracks.

A short time after Clark Datchler left Johnny Hates Jazz the band appointed a new lead singer Phil Thornalley, who had originally worked with the band on earlier material and was The Cure bass guitarist. Turn The Tide is the bands first song with Phil as lead singer.

'I don't want to be a hero' was the second hit single for Johnny hates Jazz. The song has a strong anti-war sentiment and is written from the perspective of a soldier who is questioning their participation in what they consider an unjust war. The band's American record company were reluctant to release the single in the U.S. because of its anti-war stance.

Still, it was released in the US and peaked at number 31 in the Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, the single peaked at number 11 in the UK Singles Chart and number 25 in the Netherlands.

Bananarama - More Than Physical

'More Than Physical' is a song written and performed by Bananarama. It was one of two tracks on the group's 'True Confessions' album produced by the Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) trio instead of Jolley & Swain. The album version of the track is different from the single.

In order to capitalize on the number-one success of previous single 'Venus' (the other True Confessions track produced by SAW), 'More Than Physical' was given a UK garage-influenced make-over to sound similar to the dance-oriented chart-topper. The new version's music video further capitalized on Bananarama's new glamourous and sexy visual image by including several well-muscled, topless men in a montage of shots of the group members.

'More Than Physical' did not duplicate the success of 'Venus', stalling at number forty-one on the UK Singles Chart and number seventy-three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It was a top-forty success in Australia, where it peaked at number twenty-eight. Its biggest success was in nightclubs, and 'More Than Physical' became a top-five hit on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play Chart.

'More Than Physical' was immortalised into 80's pop culture by being featured in the popular 1986 British film Rita, Sue and Bob Too starring Michelle Holmes and Siobban Finneran. The song is featured in the scene where the girls are babysitting for Bob and Michelle, and they dance around the living room while the video to 'More Than Physical' plays on the television.

Bananarama - Cheers Then

'Cheers Then' appeared on Bananarama's debut album 'Deep Sea Skiving' and was released as the third single in December 1983. After having had three consecutive top-ten hits, 'Cheers Then' peaked at a disappointing number 45 in the UK singles chart.

Fahey said in a 1986 interview about this song, "We started taking our careers seriously after 'Cheers Then' bombed. Before then we thought all groups just brought out records and had them go to the top of the charts. It bought us down to reality a bit."

Even with its relatively low sales, the song is regarded by critics as one of Bananarama's best recordings.

The music video was a recreation of the musical film The Sound of Music. Filmed in Salzburg, the girls re-enact many of the scenes from the film, including the step-jumping scene for "Do-Re-Mi" and running in the hills.

Bananarama - Venus

'Venus' is a 1969 song by the Dutch band Shoking Blue which the group took to number one in the U.S. and five countries across Europe in 1970. The composition has been featured in numerous films, television shows and commercials, and covered dozens of times by artists around the world.

'Venus' had been a part of Bananarama's repertoire for several years before they actually recorded it. The band had the idea of turning the song into a dance music tune, but they met with resistance from their producers at the time, Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. Undaunted, the women brought the idea to the production trio of Stock, Aitken and Waterman, or S.A.W., who had just recently scored a global hit producing Dead or Alive's 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)'. This was Bananarama's first collaboration with S.A.W.

Dallin, Fahey, and Woodward had nearly completed recording their third album, titled 'True Confessions', with Jolley and Swain, and being fans of the Dead or Alive selection, they sought out the SAW team in order to make their version of 'Venus' sound like 'You Spin Me Round'. Ironically, Stock, Aitken and Waterman also resisted the idea because they believed that 'Venus' would not make a good dance record.

After persistence by the women, SAW relented, and the result was a worldwide smash. Bananarama's 'Venus' went to number one in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Mexico and South Africa. It hit number two in Germany and Hong Kong and was a top ten success in Italy, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Venezuela, Norway, Prtugal and Spain. The single made it to number 8 in the UK Singles Chart. It also went to number one for two weeks on the U.S Dance chart.

The music video for the song received extensive play on MTV and video channels across the world, and presented Bananarama in various costumes, including a she-devil, a French temptress, a vampiress, and several Grecian goddesses. In one sequence of the video, The Birth Of Venus, the painting by Sandro Botticelli, was reenacted. The video marked a pivotal shift towards a more glamourous and sexual image for the girls that contrasted with the tomboyish style in their earlier work.

The collaboration on 'Venus' led Bananarama and SAW to work together on the group's follow-up album Wow! the following year. Bananarama has since re-recorded the track for their 2001 album Exotica and it was later remixed by Marc Almond, with re-recorded vocals, and included on their 2005 album Drama.

'Shattered dreams', 'I don't wanna be a hero', 'Turn back the clock'... These were the singles that made Johnny hates Jazz's fame in 1987. But before they signed to Virgin records and released the debut album that yielded these hits, they recorded their debut single on RAK records, the label owned by the father of band member Calvin Hayes: Mickie Most.

This single did not chart, but the track would end up on their debut album anyway. For Johnny hates Jazz fans, this is a real must have item. And for music lovers like me, too.

Bananarama - I Heard A Rumour

'I Heard a Rumour' is the 19th single by Bananarama and was featured on their Wow! album. It was also featured in the film Disorderlies (starring The Fat Boys) and included on its soundtrack.

The music video is an expansion on the dress-up theme of Bananarama's 'Venus'. The group are seen emulating various film stars, projected on screens behind them, by dressing up in various costumes, such as a cowgirl or Carmen Miranda. Bananarama's trademark silliness is interspersed throughout. At one point the group, dressed in French can-can dresses, bend over to 'moon' the camera and expose the letters W-O-W (a reference to their album title) on their rears. Bloopers are also kept in and intercut.

'I Heard a Rumour' became one of Bananarama's biggest singles, hitting number 14 in the UK Singles Chart, climbing to number 4 in the U.S., number 2 in Canada and number 8 in New Zealand. It was also a hit in nightclubs, prompting a top-five placing on the U.S. Hot DanceClub Play chart.

Bananarama - Trick Of The Night

'A Trick Of The Night' is a balled recorded by Bananarama. There are basically two versions of the 1986 single, one is produced by Steve Jolley and Tony Swain and released as the final single from Bananarama's album True Confessions, the other is produced by Stock, Aitken and Waterman who remixed the song slightly for its single version, adding extra synthesizer lines and vocal harmony layering giving it a more "upbeat" remix by Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) production trio, at the request of London Records.

'A Trick of the Night' was a top-forty hit in the UK, peaking at number thirty-two in the UK Singles Chart (the SAW-remixed version received the most airplay in the UK), while the ballad version stalled at number seventy-six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The single made a very brief appearance on the Australian singles chart, where it peaked at number ninety-nine.

The latter release signalled a change in direction for the group: in 1987 they would release their next album, fully produced by the trio (SAW) that was responsible for Kylie Minogue, Mel & Kim and Rick Astley's phenomenal success in that year.

The lyric of the song is about someone who has gone to seek his fortune in the big city and ended up a rentboy. The 12" single featured a remix version of both versions of the song, plus the B-side track 'Set on you', which has all the trademarks of a Stock/Aitken/Waterman remix written all over it.

Johnny Hates Jazz is an English pop band formed in 1986 by Clark Datcher (vocals, piano), Calvin Hayes (keyboards), and the German born Mike Nocito (bass).

After signing to Virgin records, 'Shattered dreams' was the first single from the group for their new record company. Released in April 1987 it was their first and biggest hit, reaching number 5 in the UK Singles Chart. The single made it to number 2 in the US Charts while in the Netherlands, it peaked at number 30 in the Dutch Top 40. The single preceded their debut album, which hit number 1 in the UK albums chart.

'Heart of gold' was the fourth single taken from the Johnny Hates Jazz's debut album 'Turn back the clock' (1987). The single featured a new instrumental track on the B-side: 'Leave it up to me'. To appeal to the collectors market, it was released in a numbered limited edition 7" box set. It included three badges, a postcard and a small poster featuring the lyric of 'Heart of gold' and a photograph of the band.

All this helped to make the single peak at number 19 in the UK singles chart, which meant that it fared slightly worse than its predecessors, but it was still a good hit. It would also be their last one: follow-up single 'Don't say it's love' didn't make the top 40, subsequent singles didn't even chart anymore.

Monsoon - Ever So Lonely

Monsoon formed in 1981 and consisted of singer Sheila Chandra, producer Steve Coe and bass guitarist Martin Smith, whom she had met in London pria to the band forming and signed to the Polygram Label.

Monsoon had a UK hit with 'Ever So Lonely' which made it to number 12 in the UK Singles Chart when Sheila was just 16 years old. The song was a track inspired by the sounds of India, like most of their album. The band released one album, 'Third eye' in 1983. This album featured a cover of Lennon & McCartney's 'Tomorrow never knows'.

After Monsoon disbanded, Sheila signed Steve Coe's Indipop label in 1984 and went on to make her first four solo albums in two years. Sheila retired when she was 20 to take a sabbatical that lasted 4 years and re-emerged with her fifth solo album on Indipop.

Miquel Brown - So Many Men, So Little Time

Miquel Brown (born Michael Brown circa 1945 - she changed her name so people wouldn't confuse her with being a boy) is an American actress and Disco / Soul singer from the 1970s and '80s most popular for the songs 'Close to Perfection' and the Hi-NRG songs 'So Many Men, So Little time' and "He's A Saint, He's A Sinner' (both now considered vintage gay anthems). She is the mother of actress/singer Sinitta and is also the step sister of disco singer Amii Stewart.

In need of a producer in the early '80s, Miquel crossed the paths of Ian Levine and Fiachra Trench in 1983. Together with Record Shack Records, they created the album 'Manpower', a Hi-NRG classic. The first single released from the album was, 'So Many Men, So Little time' which became a huge hit and peak at number 2 on the club charts and put Miquel on the international music map. However it only managed to reach number 88 in the UK Singles Chart.

Instead the single features on 'The Very Best Of Imagination' commpilation album that came out in the early 1990's. The single was backed by 'Point of No Return' which can be found on the 'Scandalous' Album. 'Thank You My Love' eventually made it to number 22 in the UK Singles Chart.

Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy

Bow Wow Wow was a 1980s new Wave band created by Malcolm McLaren to promote his and business partner Vivienne Westwood's, New Romantic fashion lines. The group's music is described as having an 'African-derived drum sound'. McLaren persuaded guitarist Matthew Ashman, bassist Leigh Gorman and percussionist David Barbarossa (also known as Dave Barbe), of the then lineup of Adam and the Ants to leave Adam Ant (born, Stuart Leslie Goddard) and form a new group. After a six-month long audition process, the band hired teen singer Annabella Lwin. Musician David Fishel, originally from Liverpool, an acquaintance of McLaren's, discovered 14-year-old Lwin while she was working a Saturday job at her local dry cleaning shop. She was singing along to a Stevie Wonder song on the radio.

'I Want Candy' is a song written and originally recorded by The Strangeloves in 1965. Bow Wow Wow later recorded the song following other hits like 'Go Wild the Country'. 'I Want Candy' was featured in an early music video on MTV and made it to number 39 in the UK singles Charts.

Oran "Juice" Jones (born 1959, Houston, Texas), often incorrectly cited as Orange "Juice" Jones, is a Soul and R&B singer. He was the first artist who was signed to OBR Records, a subsidiary of Def Jam. He was also the first R&B artist on the hip hop record label.

'The Rain' becamer a big hit for Oran in 1986 and was released from his album 'Juice'. The single eventually made it to number 4 in the UK singles Chart.

Cheryl Baker is a television presenter and singer who is most famous for being a member of 1980s pop group Bucks Fizz, and has performed for the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest twice, winning it the second time with Bucks Fizz.

From 1992, this was Cheryl Bakers second solo single. (Her first being 'If Paradise Is Half As Nice' in 1987.) Sadly, 'Sensuality' faired even worse that her first solo single and didn't even chart in the UK. For the release, she dropped her surname and just called herself 'Cheryl'. The b-side to the single was new track 'Love To Love'. I know that this is not from the 80's but it is an 80's related artit and I just had to put it up being a Bucks Fizz fan.
